This and Tribes? Oh man things are looking good! What's better than one mobility tactical shooter/mmofps? Two mmofps tactical shooters, that's what!
And that Red Five game? Future is looking damn bright indeed.
My name is my old Tribes handle so its easy to say that Planetside 2 and the rest makes me squeal in gamernerd glee

Looks good and can really be a good game....but this is as far from RPG as you can come. Its a shooter folks....

Who here didn't know that Planetside was a mmofps and not a mmorpg?
Dont know what this emote means, but figure it'll even things out.
Well the RPG part comes from being able to cert and and have some control over what kind of your character you play. I think the correct description would be more like a FPS with RPG elements
But there is definately a lil RPG mixed up in there.

The imaget looks more like concept art, if it is indeed a screenshot I can only say lol.
I think that's a scan of an image from the PC Gamer UK paper edition. So its a digital image transfered to print then scanned and transfered back to digital. Needless to say its missing some detail heh. I can't find the image on their website and it doesn't look like most other PS2 screenshots I've seen.
However it does show a bit of how their engine will be dropping detail at distance while keeping large in game structures/terrain visible. The perspective of the screenshot is from quite high in the air so you're not seeing close up detail of the terrain or the base. That will be necessary because this new engine is designed to perform well with hundreds of players in a seamless zone area.
Planetside Universe is a great place to see screenshots in the intended resolution. Here are a couple of articles there with neat screenshots. The first has one of my favorite images of various customized Magriders. The second one shows terrain like in the OP but closer up on the ground, its from their Facebook page .. I'm not sure if Facebook places limits on resolutions of images though.

Some of the buildings are just placeholders, that may explain some objects with low res textures.
I would like to see another base,we have seen the Amp Station quite a bit,it might be the base that is the farthest along in developement

Thats like every shooter these days, PS2 will take it to the next level though.

TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.
From the looks of the continental Maps there's only going to be maybe one type of each facility per continent but they are... like 6 times bigger than PS1 bases, it's kinda crazy in terms of scale.
BFR's will not be in Planetside 2 at all. Lesson learned.
I don't know Mars, I think once they were balanced they were a really good hard counter to a tank push, and one person alone could destroy them as an infantry unit if they were not properly guarded.
Then again I only started playing Planetside when the patch to nerf BFR's was being rolled out, so I didn't really know how bad it was before then.
Like everything gaming related they were never as bad as the usual hysterical posters say. They did need nerfing and were to their current balanced incarnation as you saw them. Even before that they were never a game stopper though.
BFRs could've been implemented more balanced with player testing and more time to develop the idea. SOE did what they usually do with games that aren't their flagship game (They did ok with EQ1/EQ2 as far as this is concerned) and rushed out an expansion that made the current game, people were already playing and liking, unplayable in the way they were used to.
This, on top of existing exploits and bugs that the player base wanted fixed enrages players...
Core Combat in no way made the game unplayable. Neither did BFR's themselves. To say otherwise is to be unreasonable.
They were not balanced properly, then they were ... end of story.
Looks pretty damn sweet to me...
cant wait.
Crazy how where a turret would be on each corner of a base, in this picture the base has a tower sized structure at each corner.
it's good so far
but with the promised 1 shard server like EvE with seamless gigantic map + 2000 players in 1 area fighting
ugh i am not sure if my connection will hold at all
hopefully it will be good!
So What Now?
Nice, much improved on the PS1, but still keeping those fun top wall walk ways around the base to give it the PS feel we all know. Nicely done PS2 team!
And i'll be playing another Proper MMORPG, AND Planetside 2! The original planetside is a gem of a game for many, but not for the tradional mmorpg reasons.
As I suspected, the image linked by the OP was a low res scan from the paper edition of PC Gamer. They just released the digitial version of the article. Here's a link to the full res digital version of the screenshot.

It looks beautiful. The desert continents were always my favorite in PS1. Their weather effects were also the best looking in my opinion, too. Hopefully they won't let us turn them off this time around since fighting in a sandstorm is hella fun.
I think the barrier shield is already down at this facility, but the courtyard shields are still up. I dunno, maybe all you ever see are the courtyard shields and the barrier shield is invisible until its hit? If I'm defending there I sure as hell want to protect the barrier shield with all of the high ground surrounding the base heh.
