I'm just wondering because of the two super hero games coming out. It seems like a bad idea because I don't remember CoH really being that big of a deal upon release(maybe I was just deaf). It also seems like most super hero fans(the ones interested in MMOs) are already hooked on CoH. I would just like to know what everyone thinks, and polls are always fun. Yipppeee!

Before WoW was released, I had never seen an MMORPG sell as fast and as many boxes as CoH did. Every gaming store around me was out of the game for a while.
Personally I dont think super hero MMORPG's coming out in the future are going to hit. Its kind of a one time MMORPG thing...really how much can you vary...a super hero game is a super hero game, just seems any further attempts will be more repetive than fantasy MMORPG's.
Marvel's MMO will more than likely have a life span, but mainly because of all the comic fanatics that will play it for the Marvel brand. Similar to SWG and star wars for the first six months. But COH only had a limited apeal. Unless these new mmo's can offer a better staying power they wont have COHs succes.

It was a nice change from the usual Fantasy and Sci-fi settings.
I don't think that this kind of game has enough fans to support more than 1 game though.
You also have to think about the fact that CoV is coming out soon, will add tons of new content. CoH is great and I can't really think of a better way to do a superhero MMO.

I honestly haven't heard much about any other superhero games, but I don't see why they'd fail based strictly on theme. I'm willing to try nearly anything once. In the end, it's gameplay that makes the difference for me. There's no reason two superhero games couldn't play as differently as two fantasy games or two sci-fi games; Asheron's Call, Everquest and Ultima Online were all technically fantasy, and all vastly different in pace and style; Anarchy Online, Planetside and EVE Online are all technically sci-fi, and they're..umm..worlds apart.
There's a seemingly endless crop of unsatisfied gamers out there, always looking for the next big thing or the place they can finally call home. As a result, there's always a potential pool of short-term players to draw from. If the game is good enough, some of those short-termers might settle down for awhile. I agree it's pretty unlikely that new superhero games are going to bring a lot of newbies into the industry, but I suspect any game that's well-developed and at least marginally advertised will gain itself a following.
CoH is an ok game but it lacks any longterm vision.
Multiple servers coupled with 8 slots per server for characters means there is absolutley no community whatsoever.Add in easy leveling and it gets even worse.I read somewhere that ( i think CGW) that some players sell accounts and can powerlevel a character to 30 in 2 days or so.Try the current 14 day trial and log in any given night and you will see multiple level 1 to level 5's.
There is currently no reason to be in a supergroup.
No xp bonus,no SG headquarters to stash enhancements,no real reason to be in one other than being with friends.They make it so easy to start an SG its ridiculous.Get to level 10 and go see the city hall registration desk.No need to group with other players to do so nor do you lose any influence in game.This has lead to players starting an SG with good intentions.Most SG's start off real good and then about 2 weeks later when a player gets bored they start a new character.Then you never see that player again or very rarely.
The "looking for group" button works so well that most players dont even bother to group with the supergroup they belong to.Log in click the button and in under 5 minutes you can be in a group.The whole problem is if someone in a SG needs help they dont get it because everyone else in it is in a mission with other players.
Everyone complained when SWG only allowed 1 character per server but it forced everyone to be a community.(not to mention some players bought multiple accounts.)But with CoH its the exact opposite.They made it so casual friendly that it dumbed down the game itself.My experience is that its pretty rare to find players that are dedicated to 1 character much less a SG.
For a 1st time mmo experience its a great game.For an experienced gamer?They either love it for its casual atmosphere or hate it for the same reason.

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

CoH is a great game idea that has some relatively shallow gameplay mechanics. In other words, it could be done better but it is done well.
There is plenty of room to make a superior Superhero MMOG. I, for one, would love to see such a thing.

CoH is a great game, its original, varied and is constantly upgrading and adding new features/gameplay/characters/zones/etc as updates and not for pay. Though City of villains will be a paid expansion, they've done nicely with the free updates so far. Some game company call bug fixing updates.
Currently not subscribed, but have been playing it on and off since release. Though not for fault of the game. Not sure what the other superhero mmorpg's are coming out, but I wont play the marvel one no matter how popular it is. Marvel is suing COH, bunch of legal mumbo jumbo to justify it, but the obvious reasons are because marvel is a big corporation that thinks anything with a cape and tights, must be (Tm) Marvel or (c) Marvel inc. and to possibly put COH out of business so that their mmo will be the only superhero one in existence. Competition and competing is one thing, but this kind of despicable sneaky strategy will not endear me to any product. period.
DAOC sold faster and overall better than CoH did at release. Prior to WoW it was the most successful launch of an mmorpg in terms of quickest subscritption numbres in the US.
The only thing that CoH has going for it, is that it and EVE are the only two previously games with a steady increasing population of players this year while almost every other one has been decreasing.
in regards to the guy that complained about the game not having anything. I've been playing the game for a year and yes it did sell fast at release. However, the game did become really boring after a while mainly because they released too early. The updates that have been out since release changed all that. Capes, robes, and auras all came out. The community is larger mainly because of the cape update too. No there really isn't a need for an SG (guild) but it's better to group with people from a SG rather than have some random group where people have no idea what they're doing. Unfortunately players have been able to reach 50 within a weeks time but that's all going to change. A new update is coming out that's completely nerfing anything that deals with heavy PLing. CoV is also coming out this year which WILL provide headquarters and what not.
Did CoH really hit it that big? Not at first but it's still growing fast
CoH became mighty dull mighty quickly. Super repetitive dungeon missions with super repetitive instanced dungeon enviroments had me repeating the same mission in the same enviroment three or more times in a given day and my character hadn't yet moved beyond level 11.
Some find that fun and worth paying for. I didn't.
Can Marvel do better? Any company with the willingness to invest the money (read: the time) to add actual creativity/story and originality into their game can do better. The question is whether or not Marvel will push out yet another instanced MMOG or if they'll develop a game that actually has depth.
My sig comment probably makes it clear that I am sick to death of instanced MMOGs. So yeah, if Marvel actually makes a game - and not a cookie cutter MMOG that relies soley on mindless templates - then I'll check it out.

In my opinion, CoH would be a great introduction to MMO's. If I were to choose any game across the board to introduce to an MMO newbie, I always suggest CoH even though I haven't even played for more than a month.
I think a lot of people view the game that way. It's 'streamlined' to the point where it was EXTREMELY refreshing the first few weeks, until the repetition begins to dawn on you.

BTW if they ARE nerfing the power leveling aspect prepare for a MAJOR complaint fest on the COH message boards.If they make it difficult after a year or so and then throw out the reason of "this is the way it was intended to be"that wont be good enough for most players.
Instead of nerfing the entire game id like to see Cryptic do something about the repetitive nature of the game as far as missions go.How about some midair fighting and some outdoor instanced missions?How about more ambushes after EVERY mission?
I mean really how many times can you defeat Dr.V with out banging your head against your desk?
