Rift or WoW

TalintTalint Member UncommonPosts: 168

Hello MMORPG Community,

Simple question.  If SWTOR doesn't work out for me.. and I really, really, REALLY hope it does.  What do you think I should go play.  WoW or Rift.  {mod edit}

Thanks,

hi, i hope swtor works well for you. IF not, have you played WoW and Rift in the past? if so... i suggest you chase the one you enjoyed the most... i personally enjoyed WoW a lot, and still enjoy its lore, pictures, vids, etc even now that my subscription ended a while ago... i like Rift but i dont like Rifts lore so i rather not subscribe on Rift for more than 1 month from time to time....

ill be playing swtor until Mist of Pandaria launches, then ill see what i will do with WoW and Swtor. As i said, Rift for me is a 1 month caprice

Both are polished, both are losing tons of subs but both are bringing out expansions in the near future. However if you dont like swtor as it is a themepark like wow and rift i would suggest trying a different style of mmo or else neither.

But if i had to choose i would say wow as it has the higher population and a more enjoyable ride to 85 than Rifts rush to 50.

You've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I like pandas?" Well, do ya?

The gameplay is pretty much identical (very similar to TOR) - the main difference between the two is the difference in the tone of the game, which is currently much more serious in Rift. Whether or not that's a good thing, is up to you. :)

From my personal point of view if SWTOR doesnt work out for you... Rift & WoW wont either. Going back in time rarely helps so i'd say you'll be stuck in the waiting game. GW2, TERA, Secret World, Firefall, Diablo 3

Everything I say is my opinion or personal preference. You may or may not find it useful to your cause but regardless I am entitled to it.

    WoW

Just because I'd be willing to bet if what doesn't work for you in TOR, you'd find it plenty in RIFT.

WoW has that chance also, but they often find some way to shake things up. For better or worse. I've not played since BC, but I hear about it daily.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

honestly i have played both at max level and wow at 60,70,80,85.

I had a lot of fun leveling in Rift. I played on a pvp server and Really enjoyed myself there. Once i hit level 50 the game DIED! there wasn't much to do. PVP was a joke IMO it was very very unbalanced and raiding was just boring to me. ( been there done that). The game ran great. Maxed out settings. and was very visualy pleasing.

WOW, i played wow sence beta. And yes. dont listen to ppl. wow ran like crap when it was first released. but now its one of the smoothest and most polished mmo's on the market. mainly because it has been out now for 7 years. The biggest down fall to wow is the leveling. its so boring u wanna stab bambi. Its got its moments of fun though. but you will find yourself trying to rush as fast as you can to get to max level which is 85. Thats were wow starts to shine. There is no much content in wow. Being that it has been out for 7 years. The graphics are not as good as Rift. But IMO they are bad ass. I love the art style.(My opinion).

All in all Between and my un biased opinion i would play wow. I think in the long run its a way better and more polished game. Rift is a good choice to but like i said Its just not as polished as wow.

  • DrannyDranny Member UncommonPosts: 279

I would like to say Rift but i got a feeling the subs in game will dip once tor is out. imho i prefer Rift but with the population shrinking im not sure how long it would keep you intrested with no one to play with.

  • Cthulhu23Cthulhu23 Member Posts: 994

Yeah, like others have said, if TOR doesn't work out for you, then the other two games may not work for you, either.  I'd say if your issue with TOR is content, then you'll be better off going to WoW.  The leveling process in WoW is much more enjoyable than that of Rift, and it's got a ton more content.  However, Rift would be better for you if you enjoy more character customization and freedom while leveling.  Their soul system can be pretty fun the first time through the game, at least.  Problem is, Rift is not going to have much of a population in the coming months on many servers.

WoW ran perfectly on my computer right from the start. You sure it wasn't your computer that was the problem? :D

If leveling in WoW is boring, I don't know what to call the leveling in RIFT. I think I levelled 3 chars in vanilla and I didn't get bored from playing alts. Leveling was super addictive.

I don't like cata and wotlk though. The leveling is super boring......Just grab RAF and level in 1 day :D

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

actually, thats not a reason to play or not play WoW or any other game... i dont have to touch a panda to enjoy WoW. Just like i dont have to touch the so hated pokemon battle style in order to enjoy WoW. Seeing them ingame wont affect me personally unless i play them.

but yeah i sure as hell will make a panda alt lol, tho i doubt ill train my non-battle core hound to fight other poke trainers lol... and still enjoy the game without touching that feature ;)

i have to completely agree with the part highlighted in red. i dont get bored of rolling different alts in WoW untill i get around the level 70s... tho cata is not a glorious meal, i still enjoy cata. If Trion had the same love for alts that Blizz have, i would certainly be subscribed to Rift. I care more for alts than for endgame. Yes, i do.

Actually, it is for many people. :)

Either way, pandas are just a fragment of the bigger picture that I also mentioned in my post - the fact that the general tone and atmosphere of WoW are less serious than those of Rift. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, either, so you don't need to defend WoW from me (I've played it for several years). :)

neither, retire from MMO's completely, you will feel fresher and a better person for it, or wait for GW2.

oh im not defending WoW from you, im saying my personal opinion. Like you said, Pandas are just a fragment of the bigger picture and thats why it doesnt affect me. I personally prefer WoW's pandas than Rifts seriousness because at least Pandas have a whole new "continent" with starting zones and story that fits their chinese roots while Rift force us to start with the same things always. Rift is not bad, but since i spend more time leveling alts and learning their respective part of the game story and areas, Rift doesnt give me that priviledge so its not for me although it is more serious like u said. =)

rift is a nice game but player are few and far between you ll have more fun on wow for the simple reason you wont be waiting hours at cafe for your auto message thing in your smartphone to tell you you finally found a gorup 2 week later!

  • StonesDKStonesDK Member UncommonPosts: 1,805

    Both have free trials.

Use your ability to form an independent thought on your own. Assuming you have that ability and don't just come here to be told what to think.

  • MMOtoGOMMOtoGO Member Posts: 630

WoW for sure.  But both have a free trial, so just try them.

  • onthestickonthestick Member Posts: 600

Rift if you want new but if you just want to make decision on basis of sheer amount of content avilable, i would say WOW.

How many servers SWTOR will launch with on release?

ShredderSE - Umm how many do they need? Maybe 6.
US, EU, Asian, France, German and Russian.
Subs will be so low there is no need for more
    Snoocky-How many servers?
The first 3 months a lot...after that 2 i guess, one for PVE and 1 for PVP...

Thorbrand - SWTOR doesn't have longevity at all. Might be one of the shortest lived MMOs.

I'm not trolling, but really I'm not sure if this holds for you. What question is this as you have option to download trial of both? Download and try. If you want more simply read few reviews, actually many of them.

As goes for me, wow is still my main game, but Rift is close second for now. Not sure about swtor, hope will have 3rd game to choose between and alternate from time to time.

Regardless of what others tell you, RIFT's only reason for success was because they literally copied everything possible from World of Warcraft, then added some zone or world wide events that happened timed. RIFT also has HUGE (and when I mean huge, I mean you need to think about it and realize it likely won't ever change) balance issues with PvP and PvE. I think each class has 9 talent trees, so that's 36 talent trees. They weren't able to balance it at launch, and I doubt they can now.

I haven't played World of Warcraft for a very long time (since 4.0 last year launch?), but it's currently, and likely will be for a while still, the basis of what an MMO is during this era. RIFT is a good example of someone who copied World of Warcraft but...I suppose the best analogy is this:

I play StarCraft 2 religiously...or did at one point. One of my biggest mistakes back when I was in low diamond in Season 1 is I tried to counter my opponents build. Trying to counter someone's build eventually, depending on the length of the game, forces you to play at THEIR pace, and the longer it goes on, the more of a disadvantage you have.

Every single MMO that copies World of Warcraft is doing exactly what I just mentioned up there. It simply strengthen's World of Warcraft's grasp on the market. Something like RIFT may steal players away for a month or two, but ultimately they will go, as I did, "why the fuck am I playing this second rate clone?".

I'm just hoping SWTOR, GW2, TERA, and some others may be able to break that trend. It's kinda like if someone released a cup named iCup. People are gonna associate it with Apple, sure the product might sell, but it's indirect advertisement for Apple.

Long story short: don't waste your time, go with Blizzard. They have tons of money and will always have more content than every other MMO. So they dropped 2 million players...they still got another 9 million x 14.99 to go lol

I live to go faster...or die trying.

if SWtoR doesnt work for you theres no reason why neither Rift or WoW will, they are pretty much alike.

I'd rather play something different, like ArchAge EvE or GW2.

    Wrong.

World of Warcraft is the most refined version of....well, themepark/quest-based/post Everquest MMOs. Something that may turn the OP off in Rift or SWTOR may actually be much more refined in WoW, seeing as how they ARE the original, and they do have the biggest amount of $$$ backing them up.

Don't play EVE Online, better to invest your time in something like riding a CBR600RR, or learning BlazBlue combos.

I don't think he is interested in what you are going to play. he just wantes to choose between Rift and WOW. Maybe he is not into Sci-fi settings?

Maybe he's just reading? Sometimes I post a thread, and not post back in it, come back and see 6 pages.

Always halirous to read people claw at each other; maybe the OP is trying to do that? lol
