MOST of you seem to think this game is just like WoW and Rift for PvP. I'm not 100% sure how well it will work out, but as of right now. That is NOT true. Just because they have BG's/Warfronts whatever. Does not mean thats all there is.
They have contested objective zones and FREE FOR ALL ZONES. Yes you can kill your own fanction! That right there says they trying to be more like WAR then WoW/Rift. It may still fall short, yet WAR is called a PvP game. So if its anything like that, a lot of PvP players may very well be happy about this game.
Looking at your history it seems you are a serious mmo player. This is THE mmo everyone will be talking about. Do you really want to be left out.
The only way you should not play is if $60 is a lot of money for you. If it is then no, don't play any more mmos until you have a better job.
Everyone is talking about it, and word of mouth is that its a borefest. In this economy he might not want to waste his money on a game that will be FTP in less than a year. And dont throw the too big to fail at him either, DCU was also an over budgeted badly made game.

I don't know if the game will go F2P or not (I suspect not in a years timeframe), but for the sake of argument it does, if you spent a year playing it, I think you've recouped your 'investment.' If the game holds my interest for more than a few months, I consider it money well spent. I spend a lot more taking a date to dinner and a movie in one night. Months of enjoyment will be a blessing.
OP...run away from TOR. Based on "your" likes and dislikes, and knowing that PvP is probably horrid and lacks no replay value compared to WoW or Rift, and seeing as though you really disliked Rift, there is probably a 0.0 chance you'll have any appreciation for TOR.
Imo, waiting a few months, will help sort out which side is more correct between the 'TOR is amazing' and 'TOR is Boring'.
Check back in say March, and see what the word on the street is. By that time, the honeymoon is over and people are getting a more solid look at what is in the game and what its strenghts and weaknesses are.
You will never get a completely unbiased answer from anyone on these, or any other forums. As with anything, some will love it and defend it to the death, others will create multiple accounts to try to flame it into the dark ages, and others will sit quietly by waiting for the game to launch.
The only one who can decide if you truly enjoy it, is you. If you are that on the fence, or somehow money is an issue, then wait till the game, like all others, launches a free trial a few months after it comes out. If you could care less about spending the cash, and you enjoy Bioware stories, then you should be entertained at least for a little while.

I think this is really only true if you are looking for a 100% answer.
I think the op can get enough information from forums and gamesites to make a relatively and informed and likely accurate assessment of how he/she would feel about the game, with out ever needing to play it.
In real life, there are many things that people do not need to experience 'first hand', to know that it is not something they are likely to enjoy. Video games are not much different.
If you gave Rift and Aion such low scores you will not like SWTOR. It's a very "polished" style game with simple kill x quests and objectives. There is nothing special to stand out.
DAOC was loved by so many because of the 3 faction warfare. SWTOR doesn't have that.
Shadowbane I believe was loved because of the city building and such. SWTOR doesn't have that.
SWTOR has everything WoW/Rift/EQ2 have these days in a Star Wars theme. Yes, they obviously changed a thing or two and added some new flavor but the core is still the same.
Guildwars - to me - was like a live actoin Magic The Gathering cardgame. You slot the skills (Cards) you want to play a round with and go play a round. Win or lose you can slot different cards and repeat. It was instanced 1 round style combat.

I was targetting forums in general, not so much gaming sites mainly because people will, constantly, lie about what a game plays like, what features it has, what kind of content it has and so on. Hell I've read posts with things like - SWTOR is completely instanced, there is 0 open world, there is no PvP, only 50 people to a phase at once and so on, all of which are completely untrue.
I guess I should have added that it is also based on the person. I used to watch my friends play League of Legends and joke about how terrible it looked as they played it or read anything about it. Then I played it and greatly enjoy it. Brink sounded like a fantastic game on paper and in previews, turned out to be probably the worst FPS I have ever played.
With games being an interactive experience it can be difficult to get what the game really feels like without ever actually playing it. Of course again this is all based on the person, just because I am this way with games does'nt mean the next person will be. Just gave my advice to the OP

Except, WAR designed itself around that PvP. It wasn't packaged into a niche portion of the game that is basically optional to participate in. In WAR, if you weren't doing any PvP, you were skipping the largest portions of the game.
While yes, TOR has some of the same feature's that WAR had (surprise, former-Mythic worked on it), you may recall that so does WoW (it adopted these in the last 2 expansions). However, unlike WAR, WoW isn't desinged around PvP, it's a packaged feature. You experience most of the game without ever fighting another player.
I hope I'm wrong, but from what I've seen thus far regarding TOR, most of the features are kept separate from one another. Maybe this changes after lvl 30? but through the mid-20s this seemed to be true across multiple factions & classes.
All I'm saying is the potential is there and should not be ignored. The idea of a free for all zone with resources to fight over makes me happy and hopeful. I hate watching someone of your own faction jack a resource from you and not be able to do a damn thing about it. Here I can just kill there ass, that shows me hope that they will try to keep something more then the norm for PvP.
Just like you said, they got Mythic. With WAR and DAoC under there belt. They got a lot of knowledge in this subject, be it good or bad. You can see it all ready taking place with some of the game mechanics like the guard system. Lets hope they can learn from there past and implement the good from the bad of there past. I see no reason a game can't have good PvP and PvE features.
Even though I looked at your scores from previous games. I would never tell you not to buy any game even if I didn't like it. So I'm not telling you to buy this one either, however I did vote yes, for 3 reasons!
1. You put up a poll and asked a question, so I'm obviously not "telling" you to buy anything. You wanted an opinion.
2. For you to post this poll / question, you are obviously not entrhralled in any great game atm. So another reason to vote yes!
3. Even though I answered yes, you will never actually like / not like a game untill you actually play it for yourself! And seeing as how you're asking the community to vote, why not try it? If you're not happy with anything else and have the money to spend on it again why not?
Lol, I'm surprised this thread has the legs it does. I'll be interested to see if you buy it or not. Let us know
I fully intend to honor the results of the poll. As a side note, I have been sincerely impressed by the volume of information in this thread and the objectivity of the responses!
Hah, as of this post its 0.3% difference betweenb yes and no. Hard to get closer than that.
Seriously though anyone who gave Aion/Rift/WAR such low scores .... there is no way you will like SWTOR much unless somehow the story elements really impress you.
And frankly the story of SWTOR is akin to reading some serialized D&D or star trek book. These are not written by people like Heinlein or Zelazney. They are second tier, predicable and cliched.
I will grant people that the story may be nice to have as an extra layer. But this is just not going to be on the order of Planescape:Torment. Its gonna be some nice competently written fluff.
Its simply not gonna be something that is likely to overcome the obvious preferences the OP seems to have. Especially given their PvP character. Look something who thinks Shadowbane is a good game despite all its problems has certain priorities. Priorities which are the exact opposite of what SWTOR has.
Someone in this thread asked me to post my ultimate decision, and as promised, I have honored the poll and purchased the game. Hope it doesn't suck ass. Secretly I was pulling for waffles.
