I dont know if this has been mentioned as I didnt take the time to go through the 11 previous pages, but I would love to see 'John Carter of Mars". I loved these books growing up and I find myself very excited about the upcoming movie, though I really hope they dont screw it up and ruin my great memories. I even got my oldest son to read the books recently and he enjoyed them as well. I only wish ERB would of written many more of this particular series.
You have a wide range of races, factions and classes. The only issue I see is you could not include the human race since we would obvously have an advantage, ala the books. I guess you could have earthlings if we took a hit in some stat.
I voted for Lord of the Rings. Turbine has lost their way, and LotRO has been going steadily downhill since Mirkwood (and slightly before; MoM was the last great thing to come out of Turbine, IMO).
I'd much prefer an 'Other' option, however. The Thief setting (The Dark Project/Metal Age/Deadly Shadows) would be an amazing setting to play in.
Though to be honest, I'll be happy if we simply have more games that aren't typical elf/dwarf fantasy fare.
So much background and characters to choose from. it would need to have some kind of open class system though. I mean come on a dark elf Ranger that is awesome with two schimitars too, add to that a pet!
I voted Dragon Lance, because I have good memories of playing pen and paper in that setting.
However I think a game with a neutral setting would be the best choice. No Lore-nazis would whine the canon is all wrong. Furthermore you can either suprise people with some cool stories or write the setting based on how the players are envolving in the world.
Midkemia and Dragonlance would be cool to see. Unfortunately, I don't know of any developer I would trust to do these titles justice.
The books are awesome and could be so immersive. I just don't see it happening in today's MMO formula.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

Mass effect, but not in terms of story line stuff, more like living in the universe ,claiming a moon, building a base, populate it, have turf wars between guilds/groups who can raid youre base in order to get acces to technoligy you salvaged during random generated npc missions and so on...
I've said it before. The best IP World is the free one. It's called Earth. Turf the political lines and make it massive. Give it seasons, climates and altitude variations.
"Dark tower" hands down - pleanty of possibilieties, wonderful world (worlds), grim atmosphere and gunslingers.
/Winner!
"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game." - SEANMCAD
Actually since for the most part there is no central story that is over-arching of the world, as well as that alot of the world is unexplored with many aspects fo the game left somewhat vague it would fit well. THigns like being an adept or sorcerer would be interesting as you would need to be careful of when or hwo you use the fae, since used wrong or during earthqquakes it could deal damage or even kill characters. Also fae-working was common in the world yet not always welcomed as such their would be alot of interesting aspects to playing fae working or non fae working characters. Even more so is that most humans could not use tidel fae as such you would have a differenting playstyle between the characters that work the known fae types as well. The big one is that alot of the dangers in it were/are created as well as fueled by the Human mand, as such a good reason why mobs like fae-constructs like demons and such repopulate as they are created by the Humans. Also many stories or thigns could be about the various unknown Lazus that were not named yet are hinted to exist in the world, the church with it's seeking to make humans unable to work the fae, and also the unknown native races that most likely exist in the world. I would actually love to play as a lazu/fae construct that devoured it's creator to become trully real, and then having to hide or evade the humans as well as church.
The other idea or setting i thought of was from back in ps one that i liked alot with alot of lore, massive periods or unexplored time frames, also massive amount of races that you could play as well. THat would be Suikoden so much of that universe was well done and done in a vary well manner between games for the story/backgrounds of the characters prior or after the games to link the games together with a feeling of the world actually being pretty fluidic. Add in the massive numbers of places like Harmonia that you could play or live in it would be so great imo. Also the rune based magic system along side the combo attacck system they had for characters the combat could be vary interesting as well. Either making true-runes unattainable or merely self-aware (as they were in game.) with the maybe even baing the forces that you have to fight for or against as they control the world around you would also be interesting. The last thing is just hwo diverse the game can be really with looks, peple, and cultures that just exploring the entirity of that world would take along time.
hmm other ips that would be interesting might be like Claymore, Full mental alchemist, Trinity blood (even though it is basically sci-fi it has that gothic fantasy horror style and feel as well.). Just too many good ips and such that would work well as mmos.
The Malazan universe might be cool, I think Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont originally started it as a pen and paper game.
To be massive it has to be really well known. So whats the greatest/most read fantasy book ever written? Probably the bible. but yeah not gonna happen.
Greek Mythology and Homer's Iliad could be really cool. Anyone who has even a slight interest in literature and fantasy has read the Iliad.
I would vote for Ian Banks culture universe. Civilisation managed by AI factions, super advanced technology, Alien civilisations, ring worlds, sentinent spaceships 45 km in length with living cities on them, hidden portals between worlds. So much scope
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
I've said it before. The best IP World is the free one. It's called Earth. Turf the political lines and make it massive. Give it seasons, climates and altitude variations.
I voted for Forgotten Realms but as other have pointed out, Shadowrun would lend itself nicely to an MMO game. Its both Sci-Fi and Fantasy; the best of both worlds!

yeah that too for a sci-fi mmo
although - the culture would always win
also have you read Transitions, what about that sort of world? sort of fits the "real world" thing to.
I dont think the IP matters THAT much. It matters more like how its done.
For example, I love the Conan stories and I would be massively interested in a Conan game that would be for roleplayers. I'm however not at all interested in Age of Conan:
- Only THREE(!!!) races (thats absurd beyond description, given the number of races in the story and even worse in the setting)
- One can play Conans race, a massive lore failure .. the only Cimmerian in the Conan stories is Conan himself, so his race shouldnt be an option for the player
- Still even with only 3 races, they had to insist on race limited classes
- Small gameworld (and Conans world was actually as big as, for example, Middle Earth)
- Shooterlike, shallow combat
- Cheap effects like beheadings and nudity. While I dont really care if you have them or not, the way it was advertised was very annoying and repugnant.

i would go forgotten realms.

If done right could be something special.

Elric young kingdoms, lets have dark fantasy instead of all this fluffy stuff
also Warhamer is massive Elric / Corum ripoff anyway
and most of the others are tolkien rip offs, I mean Shanara god awful
Dragonlance would be cool.
The Malazan universe might be cool, I think Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont originally started it as a pen and paper game.

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
Already done, The Secret World
FYI, that is set in Forgotten Realms.
I voted for Forgotten Realms but as other have pointed out, Shadowrun would lend itself nicely to an MMO game. Its both Sci-Fi and Fantasy; the best of both worlds!

NEW IDEAS that can refresh the STALE state of MMORPGs
I dont think the IP matters THAT much. It matters more like how its done.

I would choose a completely original IP owned by the devs so that they could make their own vision without the constraints of existing lore.
