They could at least let me keep my main character without paying for it.

Changing the payment model to get new players into the game is no issue, but screwing over their veterans is not a good idea. Anyone who already have bought the entire game should at least be able to unlock a few things for free, we are the reason that the game even exists anymore and the most likely type to actually buy new stuff as we play.

The LOTRO guy can log in his character, but he cant quest or run dungeons.

Exactly how are you screwed over?  what could you do beofre that you could do now?   LOTRO wants you to pay for the same thing twice too.  You cant use that argument.  I already bought all the quests when i bought the box, did I not?

Really, anyone who says they were screwed over by this is just full of shit, no one lost anything.  You can only gain.  You can cry and moan that you didnt gain enough (which is exactly what you are doing) but you did not remotely get screwed.

The fact that I can't log into the game with my main character is a pretty big deal.  Who cares that there's certain content I can't do because I haven't paid any money?  Maybe I just want to log in to chat with my guild or to run low-level F2P dungeons with guild mates.  All of this I can do in LotRO for free but not  in EQ2 without paying money to unlock my class/race combination, and EQ2 actually has a mentoring system which encourages playing through old content.

all expansions are free though Sentinels Fate - except DOV and AOD

players can level to 90 without buying anything

DOV can be bought for 15.00 on the SC store

AOD is a feature expansion w no adventure content, and largely not needed unless you want to play a beastlord

Yup. 6+ years old account. Bought all expacs (except the last one, as it's overpriced garbage).

All characters are locked and I cannot create a new char either.

Especially with SWTOR early access beginning in a couple days, there is No way Im gonna pay SOE a single dime, just to play one of my own characters I have had for years already!

The LOTRO guy who bought the original SoA, Mines of Moria and Mirkwood and now RoI can get to level 75 for FREE! Have access to Skirmishes and pretty much all dungeons!

How do I know? Because I play currently on Premium mode without a single restriction!!

Maybe actually inform yourself first, before spouting out total nonsense you appearently know nothing about?!

Now take a look at Everquest 2. I have paid FULL price for every single Expansion since 2004, have paid years and years on subs, have bought plenty of cosmetic stuff in their Cash Shop.

Now they convert to F2P and all my characters are LOCKED and I am NOT able to create a new character on my account either! Unless I delete one of my old characters! /BIG Facepalm!

When Funcom went F2P with AoC they gave returning vets 2 character unlocks for FREE! So they could at least check out the game again with their OWN characters!

The game doesn't even have 500 players as it isn't on the Steam stats page and F2P just launched. Proves people do not care about Everquest 2 because it is not a good game and this shit just proves why you shouldn't care for Planetside 2 because SOE are such a poorly run company.

Have you tried registering yor game in the accounts page, I see there is an option to registar previous keys, I never subbed so 'I'm not sure if that would work for your characters to be made available.  Maybe worth a try.

You do realize this is no different then, say, having a level 30 character in LOTRO, coming back to him with the f2p, and not being able to quest anywhere.  LOTRO locks content, EQ2 locks classes/races.  If you make a new character (or unlock the particular class you want) you have access to all the content.

The issue people have is they fail to look at the big picture, only what effects them.  F2p isnt meant to be the prime way to play, its meant as an unlimited trial with the hopes people sub.  However for the people that do want to play for free, there is an insane amount of content they dont have to pay a cent for.  Just have to go with one of the 8 classes.

Its amazing how closed minded people are though.  Everything is a big scam and SoE sucks, because everyone either wants everything catered to THEM, or doesnt take the time to actually look at the full picture.  In the end you may still prefer the pay for content method, but if you think SoE's system is bad or greedy or anything like that then you have major lack of analytical skills, or blindly hate SoE.  Sadly, 95% of the users on this site seem to fall into one of those two groups.

They are NOT asking yo to pay for the game including expansion twice, they are asking for a subscription if you don't want the f2p limitations... And given that unlocking those two things needed is the same cost as one month subscription I can hardly see your point.

    1 month = $15

    2 unlocks = $15

What is the real problem, before this you had to chip out $15 every month to 'unlock' the game, now you need to pay equal amount of money as you did for 1 month and then anjoy the game for free?

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

sorry but those 15$ are not equal.

the 2 unlocks leaves you with plat cap, quest cap, bag cap, spell cap, weapon/armor restrictions, chat restrictions etc.

the 15$ sub removes all that.

sure you can "play the game for free"  if you dont mind being extremely gimped. They want you to think your getting a good deal but youre not.

You have to ReSub and all your chars will be unlocked and back to normal. If you want to play with no monthly fee and with out unlocking you are restricted to set class/race.  They have a really fair system, it lets your try the game and unlock things you need for a small price, you dont need eveything. But if you feel you need everything then go ahead and sub.

Free 2 Play is such a bad name for these business models. By now though you should know what it means.

I agree - freemium is a better name heh

I agree that its disappointing and a turnoff to be a returning player and finding all your characters locked

I like EQ2's new model, but I also rerolled last year when SOE launched the f2p server

one thing I dislike about Turbine, any CASH I spend in DDO for Turbine points is nontransferable to any other Turbine game.

Thats one plus to SOE, SC cash is shared throughout all SOE games

    Huh?

    1. $15 equals $15 nothing more, nothing less. No matter how one tries to spin it.

    2. You are right F2P gives you restrictions. Surprisingly.

    3. Noone have to pay the game twice to continue playing, not even if he wants to enjoy the game for free with his so called veteran characters.

    (4. Did this ever really have anything to do with logging in to say hi to his old mates?)

You are comparing the fully unrestricted game, with the subscription, with the F2P restriction. I'm not... In that case why not skip all this with his gripe about some characters/races not being accessable. why not be honest and whine "I don't get the same sort of access to game if I don't subscribe to it".

But that whinage is not subtle enough.

Once I get through finals I plan to do a cut down of it all. If you can get a lot unlocked for around $90 bucks (6 months of sub time costs) then it might be worth it since there's a lot of content in EQ2.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

spend $40.00,  get $80.00 SC --  the last x2 SC promotion was halloween weekend

I am in the same situation. Just started to download the game when i realized that I won't be able to play any of my old toons. I don't mind paying for classes or content, but I do seriously think that SOE should honor returning players with SOMETHING. One  extra slot for each expansion you bought, or give us the possibility to use our old characters for the slots (2) that we are given as free to play players.

repost just to let people know>
    Paying to unlock characters..
    WARNING!!
You pay 10 USD to unlock a character slot right?
Well according to SOE support you can't pick which toon becomes unlocked. It can only work from the BOTTOM up.
So if your main is at the top of your list. Pay the 5 dollars for silver membership and you get your bottom 4 unlocked. Then it's 10 bucks a pop until you get to the one you want unlocked.
I'm thinking this is bull shit completely.
But that's what support just told me.
Lame. This is BS for vets.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

I don't really have a problem with classes being locked off, heck I expected the Beastlord class to be unavaliable to me since I haven't purchased the expansion yet.  I mean that just makes sense.

My problem is that I bought the game in the past when it wasn't free and I played the game for about 3 months (had the account active for longer thinking I'd get back to it), but not I can't access any of the characters I made without paing more money for them or deleting all but one of them since they take up playable character slots and I can't make a free character if they're there.

I'd be less annoyed if I could make a free character without deleting all my old characters, but I can't do that.  I'd much rather that they locked off content than locking off all the races and classes.  At least that way I'd have been able to log into the game and play through some content and then purchase what I wanted when I needed, but with this implementation I either need to spend a lot of money on classes and races to play any of my old characters and more money on character slots in order to make a new character.  I'd much rather pay more money over time unlocking content than this giant up-front fee I have to pay simply because I bought their product in the past ... something I wouldn't have had if I'd never given them money at all.

It's a fine implementation for new players, but it's a very poor one for returning players.  Very.

You won't be paying more than you did before.  Once you subscribe with gold, you will have them all back which is 15 bux a month like before.   I had this same problem when DDO went f2p online and some of my old characters weren't available to me as free to play, but they didn't have a vet system in place so it wasn't such an issue for me to make a new account or four. lol

The thing is vet rewards are meant for players who PAY FOR THE GAME for a certain amount of months/years.  It wouldn't exactly be fair that f2p players get the same advantage.

But I guess they did give people your characters if you made them before this month no matter your sub.  I just read that late, sorry. :P
