And that's exactly what I think it comes down to, desperation. People want so badly to believe that a game will come around and knock their socks off. A game that rivals the entry of the "so-called" titan of the MMO world. Logic and reasoning seem to fall by the wayside as thread by thread goes by. Personally, I do see the appeal. I would not say that SWTOR is a bad game, but would I say that it deserves the hype? Would I go so far as to say that it's lived up to the hopes of the masses? Well, no. Apparently many fans are placated, so I guess Bioware will fall on soft ground.
To sum up, I believe the game is decent. It certainly isn't as terrible as some that I've played. I do feel as though I'm running the gauntlet through a tired and far over-used system that we've all pretty much gotten used to. I believe that the fate of this game rests entirely on the shoulders of upcoming expansions. After a few months, I predict the veil will start to tear and people will begin to realize that they're just going through the motions. Huh, I guess everyone's just riding the "high" of the new car smell right now. Anyway, people are praising god that this miracle game has finally arrived in our lives. If that's how you feel... cool, but I have the feeling that you're easily pleased :P

..Cake..
It is star wars so you get craziness that is for sure.
I was not going to even bother with this game at all after getting to 30 in beta I didn't want to login anymore.. but I decided to not think of it as an MMORPG of old, just Mass Effect - multiplayer and see it once and move on.
So I shall give it another shot. I think once I got over this will not and is never going to be anything more than a story driven, completely on rails with NO choice experience...
I said OK maybe one run through.
What about people (like myself) who beta tested for several month now and who are still planning to play at release and for several month to come?
Care to elaborate about those ?
I agree with the OP, it is not as bad as Star Trek Online, but I dont see what the whole fuss is about either. It is just a decent run of the mill triple A themepark with alot of voice acting.

There is nothing to elaborate about you.
Why is there a need to elaborate on it? There are people playing Mortal Online since release as well, does not prove that the game has longetivity.
However the retention will show that. For example Rift is already dropping subscribers steeply so it will be interesting how this game handles the 6 month mark.

Here's my mentality and always will be. If it keeps MY interest and there are people to have fun playing the game with.. as long as the company keeps making new content and keeping ME happy, I'll keep playing. Could care less about the numbers of people, so long as there are people in the game.
Im not saying its EQ or something but... Look at EQ, they are still making sh1t for that game and there are people still playing it. Make fun of them, call them names, do as you wish, if they are enjoying it still.. then my goodness be happy for them.
You dound like a Sith to me.
You selfish bastard!
Wait, got more room for candidates in the Sith Academy?

Not need to elaborate, you are right.
The answer is simple :
you guys are burnt out of ThemePark MMORPGs, just move along
Star Trek Online brings literal tears to my eyes. Such disappointment in that game... dear god...
I guess that it's unrealistic to have expectations that a game will bring something truly revolutionary to the table, but a man can dream.
Also, Mckiediz, I did elaborate. If you enjoy the game, that's wonderful. I personally don't see how it deserves the incredible amount of hype so far, but that's just my opinion. If you find a game that you can play and truly enjoy for years on end, thank god! I only wish I could be satisfied enough to find something like that. Again, though, the game is not bad. I do suggest that everyone buy it and try it. I can play it for a couple of months and be pretty satisfied with it.
I believe SW:OR got hyped of the people that wanted desperately to de-hype WoW.
I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it

You're damn right on that one. Too bad this game could have been so much more than just a (well made) themepark MMO.
That's how I'm playing it. As a good, story driven ORPG that I will play through once or twice, then uninstall.
I'm having fun doing what I'm doing, but I have no sense of this being an MMO experience I would want to play for months on end.

I agree. SWTOR is not a mindblowing MMORPG.
I did not follow the hype. Did not really read every article. Then a beta invitation popped up at the end of November. Was bored and decided to install. After a few hours, the game was surprisingly fun to play. I really enjoyed myself.
I was spoiled by Rift. I enjoyed the semi-dynamic invasions. A questhub taken over by mobs or fighting other players (from the other faction) who decided to claim a certain crossroad for their own. SWTOR has much less content, smaller areas and is more on rails. Still SWTOR did something Rift failed to do, it got me hooked. I pre-ordered on November 30rd and am now enjoying myself during Early Release. Did I mention you can make a chubby character? Not some fat alien, but a human with a few pounds too much?
Lol! Wow. It must be driving you haters absolutely bonkers that this game is going to be a HUGE success. Why else would you spend countless hours in this ridiculous and futile effort to convince people that this game is somehow "bad?" It's not going to happen. People are going to enjoy this game whether you like it or not {md edit{
Welcome to new ERA where the MASS is easly brainwashed and this case by EA/bioware who did so far FINE job achieving this of luring people to game promise they get a lightsaber:P
But my prediction is this over after hollidays when they find out game brings nothing new becouse its the hundreds clone released in last 6years and forums will be full of whiners and they go back tto WoW by leaving WoWsyfy 2;)

I see a lot of critics of the game say that it adds nothing new to the genre, as you are implying. I would have to disagree with that, but I would agree that what it adds probably isn't major. What's more important is it's different in the areas that count.
Secondly, why do so many MMO players feel the need for the genre to make big changes? The fps genre has been the same for many years and you don't see those people crying about it all the time. The fact is there are some things if they changed, this would no longer be the genre for me. It's the same style of play with updated graphics, and that's basically all I want in this genre as well. And before people start railing against that, are you saying you wouldn't want another UO with updated graphics but the same style of play? If that's the 'innovation' you're calling for, all well and good because that's not really innovation, that's regression. Which if that's what enough players want to justify it, then I'd join you in calling for it.
Tell me, how many people wanted EQ2 to be an updated EQ with better graphics and were disappointed that it was changed as much as it was? The fact is people don't like change. Many of them cry loudly for it, but when it comes they don't like it. Personally I just try to keep my mouth shut and hope games I like will continue to be made.
Haha, funny ... But alas no, Im on the light side. Funny fact though, Im going to roll a sith once Im done on my side to keep things fresh , but all my friends under the age of 29 have started off Sith, go fig
People like you make me so sad. Not for myself, but for your sake. In your attempt to derail any hate-mongering, you've succumbed to it yourself. You clearly did not read anything that I wrote. This is not about bashing. This is not about an extreme view of any kind. This is about a realistic, and reasoned opinion of the game.
True. And one day you'll join our ranks. (of the burnt out). And you'll understand.
Don't worry, we'll warmly welcome you into the club.

replace "movie" with "game"
I'm not sure, I've been playing the same ol mecanism of Street Fighter along the Street Fighter series for 15 years now and I'm still enjoying it.
Guess what : Swtor gets rid of severe grinding and lack of polish and depth which usually burn me the most! Hurray
Lol!
"How dare they have fun in a game that I don't like? Better write another post about it in mmorpg.com forums!"
Except there's one flaw in your supposed "genius" logic: You can't apply reason and logic to "fun" or whether or not somebody else should have fun. You either enjoy the game or you dont and likewise others either enjoy it or don't. What you're doing is a little like writing a thesis paper on why Juliet shouldnt love Romeo. Do you think Juliet is going to listen to you?
