WoW might be a bit over bright, but at least it does not look to me tepid and depressing like Rift, not to mention Rift feels very small and the world feels very artificial just built for the sake of leveling, while WoW has history for places all the way back to other Warcraft games and tons of lore that is a lot more easier to process.
If you disagree or dont care for graphics or lore, I'd still pick WoW over Rift because of the sheer size of WoW, they are very very similar games in how they feel when you are in the game, both technically working more or less very well, with the differences WoW feeling a bit more light hearted where Rift goes to the shades of grey in every aspect for good and worst, and the small size of Rift and artificial world feel all put together makes me vouch for WoW over Rift anyday.
Ofcourse if a person is completely done with WoW there might be a little something to do in Rift for a while, but I doubt it would last very long.
If the title is preferred to be fantasy, I'd wait for GW2, it has a lot similar third person gameplay but a lot of salt and spices on top of that, but I'm afraid that would be a very long wait, people who cannot wait for it are lucky if it's released 2012 at all. The state of the genre is such that there is not much to choose from if you cut off F2P's, WAR, Aion and Conan (and TOR).
Skyrim would propably feel awesome even if you dont like singleplayer titles but it's just that, a singleplayer title.
Trion is a better company and Rift is more massively-multiplayer and a game that has improved massively-multiplayer elements such as the open-world community-encouraged dynamic environment.
Ive played both. WoW for a couple years and rift for about 2 monthes. I personally enjoy rift more. i enjoy the graphics and the world events are fun. id go with rift.
Rift offers more in my opinion. Not more raids/dungeons/zones but more to do
Like say you can get together with a party go around zones doing different boss fights. These can range from 2 players to 20 players.
I like getting currency and other useful things from closing rifts or stoping invasions.
Crafting is pretty much the same, execpt what's nice about Rift's is if you're crafting gear, you can uncraft the gear and get some of the mats back. I know it's like that with enchanting/disenchanting in wow, but this how it is with armorsmithing and weaponsmithing, I imagine the other proffesions in rift also provide this.
The world looks sooo much nicer.
The world events are usually just a grind for a new mount or planar essence ( type of gear )
If you can afford it (since it is pricey to get started with everything since they don't sell a combo you have to buy everythings seperately except for vanilla and BC) go with wow. Why would you want the cheap knock off (Rift) if you can afford the Rolex? I don't like either one of them anymore, but I'd rather go with the original than the counterfeit any day.
Trion is a better company and Rift is more massively-multiplayer and a game that has improved massively-multiplayer elements such as the open-world community-encouraged dynamic environment.
If one had to choose one, I'd go with Rift.
Rift is the opposite of Massively Multiplayer, unless you consider glorified lobby games to be that. WoW is far more of a massive multiplayer game than Rift, and has a ton more content.
To the OP, choose WoW unless you like more freedom in customizing your character's abilities, etc. In that case, I'd go with Rift. WoW is superior in every other aspect but deep customization.
WoW has a lot more content and polish id say, although truthfully im only going off what i have heard about Rift. I hear Rift is pretty cheap nowadays, but if you've never played WoW before you can pick up the original and the first expansion for $5 at Blizzards online store and the other expansions have dropped in price significantly aswell. Seems SW:TOR is putting Blizzard on edge.
Go with WoW if you like having your account hacked. Go with WoW if you like unresponsive customer service who send automated responses to your requests for help. Go with WoW if you like playing with people who have reduced the game to an excel spreadsheet and will shun you if you aren't elite. Go with WoW if you like paying a ton of money to play the current version. Go with WoW if you want to be sold a Sparkly horse every year.
Rift is similar to WoW. They took many of the good ideas and tweaked them a bit. It's not night and day better, but it is refined. The graphics are not even comparable. The company is widely regarded as the best MMO company around right now. The customer service is responsive.
WoW was awesome. It was theirs to lose.....and they did. I'm sorry folks. If they wake up and offer the client for free with paid subscription I might be inclined to say they are equal. At this point it's silly to claim WoW is superior.
Should also note Rift is inovating as evidenced by their new Instant Adventure system announced today.
i guess its kinda hard to start a new game when u gotta lvl up a new toon again, sorta feel like youve done it too many time already :P
again not real gamer, if you ere why woldnt whine about starting again. swap to concole and pay mario games if you dont want to start over. rift vs wow , either one. eventho wow have paperdoll system wich gives more different lookas aroud the game than rift.

This thread should be: Single Player Games vs. WoW until GW2.
I tried Rift for months, didn't get into it as much. I'm off and on WoW now with the free 'handouts' from Hour of Twilight dungeons. Item level 378s are cake now. If you ever wanted to raid, now is the time to get into them easily.
I've tried almost every MMO to date, I'm sticking with WoW not only for the community (or lack thereof sometimes) but for the fact that there's always something to accomplish.
The content that Trion are getting out is phenomenal, no other MMO comes close. The actual disk size of game has almost doubled in 7 months. and shows no signs of slowing down.
The only thing WOW has going for it is a long standing player base and a huge one at that. Every other aspect rfit surpasses.
They recently released Instant adventure, where you join a group/raid instantly in open world to do quests, and the difficulty scales with how many players.
I am at end game and the things I have a choice to do are.
Raid Instances - 3 10man and 3 20man - T1 and T2
Achievements - nearly everything you do has a achievment attached to it. (there are also hidden puzzles to find and complete in each zone which is quite an interesting one)
Planar attunement - XP After max level, lets you attune your character with a few added bonuses.
PVP - 5 PVP instances, open world PVP, and PVP Rifts
Rifts - Minor, Major, Raid - there are dymanic, or you can get lures to summon the rifts - rifts come with a currency that you can purchase equipment and various other things.
Daily quests - for reputation/notoriety
Onslaughts - defend towns from waves of invasions - build up defence turrets
Instant adventure - Jump into a open world quest group/raid that scales difficulty with players
Artifact collecting - Shinies to discover around the world
Crafting - Each unique and some very high level gear that can be make (around T1 raid quality)
Group dungeons - Expert / Normal / Master Mode 12 in all T1 an T2
Chronicles - Solo and Duo dungeons 3 to choose from.
Epic quest lines - Even being at end game there are still quests to be done.
World events - A event that builds up through stages to a huge boss, unique rewards - currently xmas one is going, can purchase unique items relating to the event
Invasions - Dynamic content where zones can come under attack and players have to complete/defend objectives that will result in a boss fight if sucessfull.
Respec - there are absolutely huge ammounts of class specs you can have and each one can play very different, you can have several specs running to change to at will, so if a tank is needed jump onto tank spec, or dps or support. no hanging around for specific class types.
This is just of the top of my head, most days I find something different to do. I just love the dynamic world.
Graphics are a bonus.
But whatever you choose have fun.

Unless they added a shit load of content to Rift in the last 2 months i stopped playing, then i wouldnt recommend it.
Great graphics or not, its content isnt gonna get u past a month+ of playing, unless u get in2 a high raid guild by farming months of the same stuff over n over for gear...
Totally concur. Even though Rift churns out content at a rabbits pace its still mostly fluff and the Devs even stated that their focus on endgame is "Raid or Die", everything else is just to appease the casuals and they do a rather piss poor job at it. From what I hear all the new content is overshadowed by the fact that Trion cant balance the classes to save their life, and this is inevitably their downfall IMO. No support for their Dynamic Events is the other major downfall of the game followed up closely by their total fail state when it comes to PvP.
WoW is old and dieing, its still the same thing and their are hemoraging long term players with their stupid design choices. Pandas, Pokemon and dumbing down of their talent system anyone?
I Highly suggest if you like themepark MMO's then give SWTOR a shot, it has alot of meat to go along with the themepark potatoes.

Yeah Ember Isle really was fluff.....! Other MMO's would charge for that as an expansion. I am more than happy with the content they give, I have played 1700hrs since release and nowhere near having done everything (and I dont, and wont go past t1 raiding) so im casual?
And on Class balance I would ove to hear of a game that has balanced classes, even Wow after all these years patches it and they only have a handfull to contend with, not hundreds of different combinations rift gives. For me a certain class having the upper hand for a while works well, otherwise it would be the same stagnant thing everyday.

Neither for me. I'd play DCUO (F2P) until TOR comes out.

Both are bad.
Trion is better company though, so if really have to choose go with Rift.

Trion is waaaaay ahead in giving their community what they want.
No excuses.
Trion is expending the money they get from your sub right into the game to satisfy YOU!
Blizzard must expending it in yatchs or in other games...but definitly not back into WoW.
lol thats funny, and yeah ive definately had to biffs in groups
