Piggybacking off of our List last week, we take a look at five television shows of the past and present that might make compelling online games. Chime in with your thoughts!
I know it's become a bit passe to talk about popular IPs that should be turned into MMOs. I mean, why does everything have to be made into a game, and worse an online game? Can't we just leave some things as they are without trying to squeeze every last possible dime out of them? The short answer, as I put on my Armani suit and don my $500 Prada sunglasses is "No". Okay, let me take this stuff off, even I feel like a douche. Now, where was I? Oh, right. That agonizing way we ride pop culture like a broken pony into the dirt and then smother it with our adoration until it's a lifeless husk of what once made it great and no one cares anymore. In the grand American tradition of taking cool things and bludgeoning it into our consciousness until it's no longer worth a damn, we give you Five TV Shows That Should Be MMOs.

5) Land of the Lost - I could see this. The show was about the family, but there's room for other players and people there.
4) Deadwood - Yes.
3) Muppets - I loved that show, but I don't see playing a game there. I just never saw that as a world to visit.
2) Walking Dead - Yes.
1) Masters of the Universe - I don't think so. The show was about He-Man, not about "Random Hero #12" saving the universe. There's just no room for other people there.
If I had to pick recent shows, Walking Dead would be #1 on the list. Something like "Once Upon A Time" would be cool too, but I think it would make a better single player or coop RPG game than an MMORPG.
Falling Skies would be good because there's plenty of room for people outside of the heroes in the show - there's an entire world of activity, we only get to see a small part of it in the show. I think Trion's new game Defiance is taking a stab at something very similar to Falling Skies.
I think something like Boardwalk Empire might be good too, a Prohibition Era gangster thing. The game would have to expand out a bit, but I think the setting would be really cool. No magic, no high tech stuff, just tommy guns and guts.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
- Masters of the Universe is a no brainer but unfortunately todays younger generation is probably saying...HUH!?! Master of the what now?!?
- The Muppets is a GREAT idea. Can you imagine all the different muppets running around? It feels wrong though a Muppet killing a rat, or boar, or...
- The Walking Dead FANTASTIC TV show, but you can do an MMO with any "Zombie" theme really.
3 out of the 5 of these are too old to be useful for a company, except as perhaps a launchpoint for their own ideas (read: Wildstar =/= Firefly, but kinda).
you might get away with Walking Dead. i don't think a Western mmo would make it, except as niche game.
i think you could pull of a Terra Nova style game and i think the addition of aliens or an early evolved race would be terrific. in fact when in the episode where the kids head out to the waterfalls and see the inscriptions, i smiled wide inside thinking, Oh ya, some alien/early civilzation/lost race comin' up! no luck there though. just some emo kid who hates his dad and has a brain too big for his social skills.

One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

Diff'rent Strokes Online! Build it!!!
Transformers
Muppets (totally agree with whoever originally posted that idea)
Voltron (dating myself here but loved it)
Thundercats
And top of my list would have to be:
Merlin
Pokémon (AAA, not indie)
Merlin
Shaman King
Cardcaptors
#1 Firefly
Fix it.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

I would totally play Muppets Online

Am trying to think of some ones that people wouldn't normally be thought of:
1) the 4400
2) Highlander: The Series
3) Charmed
4) The Dollhouse
5) Lexx
All of those would make interesting MMOs, IMO. I also, of course, agree with the Firefly one suggested above. Here are some musings from yours truly:
1. One Piece. I know a lot of people on this site harbor irrational hate for anything Asian but One Piece really has an interesting universe with unique characters with crazy and uncoventional abilities. I have no idea how this would work though as most characters in the show really DO have unique abilities, natural or supernatural. And what a balancing nightmare it would be. Still, if someone could pull it off...
2. Star Trek. A proper Star Trek game, mind you. I want to explore and use diplomacy to solve problems and be bald and say "make it so".
3. Stargate. I know one was in the works but it got scrapped, unfortunately. I just like the different factions and their technologies.
4. Avatar. No, not the blue aliens (although that might make an interesting MMO as well), the universe with benders of the elements. Being a element bender would be cool. Also, let the game take place in a distant future where all the nations are fighting against each other. People always go on and on about 3 faction PvP, how about 4 faction PvP? Eh, why not.
5. Adventure Time. I think this was suggested in some other thread. Fuck yeah, Adventure Time. Adventures, delightful graphics and hilarious dialogue with hidden adult jokes. It's post-apocalyptic, too. Perfect.

Wow...certainly not the list I expected to see...but some interesting ideas. Personally, I don't see how you make this list without including Firefly and Farscape...if ever there were tv shows destined to be MMO's, they're it!
Land of the Lost - Really?!?!?
Deadwood - I'd love it, but I don't see a western themed MMO really getting much support
Muppets - What a fantastic idea! My son would love a Muppets game and what a great way to introduce him to the MMO genre!
Walking Dead - Yes, but insert any zombie theme here
Masters of the Universe - Imagine the character customization potential!

My Review Manifesto

I'm disappointed in the original list. No love for Babylon 5 or Farscape at all, and no nods to the great heritage of westerns -- Bonanza, Gunsmoke or the even Wagon Train. What about the spy genre? I, Spy, the Man from U.N.C.L.E. or even Get Smart could work ("that's the second biggest MMORPG flop I've seen this month"). Even the cartoon genre were poorly represented. I'll see your Masters of the Universe and trump that with Jonny Quest.
So many choices to be really original and thought provoking, and we get this.

BAH!!
Firefly
Babylon 5
Game of Thrones!
Just stay away from Game of Thrones and i'll be happy!
Rather hard to make a Firefly MMO when you don't even have the rights to the game. Multiverse bought the rights to this title from Fox back in 2006 and has done nothing with it. It is not even listed on their website as a game they are working on.
So far as most of us are concerned a Firefly MMO is just a figment of someone imagination. Just putting up a webpage saying Firely Universe team is working on it means nothing, there are a ton of empty websites out there for games that never happen.
So until we actually see something develop it most definitely should be on this list.
The Firefly mmo is going no where right now because they dont have the rights.

I'd be all for a Walking Dead or Deadwood MMO, I was a huge fan of the online sandbox mode in Red Dead Redemption (I just wish I didn't need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play it) and Deadwood had an excellent formula for generating tension, drama, and suspense without the need for constant gunfights and killing (though of course plenty of people get killed regardless).
I've sampled a few Zombie MMO's but sadly most of them are text-based or have clunky interface systems. I'm still hopeful that someday soon a really good Zombie MMO will come out and I think The Walking Dead would be a great series to draw inspiration from.
And no one told me!?!

1. Firefly..no need to elaborate on it, just make it!
2. Band of Brothers..well, a true sandbox PvP WWII RPG, where everyone doesn't join a race, but a nation, and everyone helps rewrite that servers history!!
3. Doctor Shrinker(God I am Old)/Honey I Shrunk The Kids..simple, a whole city is shrunk somehow, and they most cope with dangers they never knew existed. Wow those rain drops are huge! look out, it's Ratzilla!!
4. Final Count Down-hope thats the right name, the movie where the USS Enterprise goes back in time rigft before the Japs bomb Pearl Harbor..some many things can be done here, different time streams, out comes, tech introduced way too early in history.
5. Planet of the Apes-lots of ideas, humans vs apes, humans vs humans, uncovered old tech and weapons, heck, throw in another faction and it becomes crazy...humans on the verge of being wiped out..kind of like a reverse Terminator!
