I think Star Wars is one of those things that will never die. It's a mystery why but they have such a huge fanbase I don't see it every going away. I'm not a die hard fan boy but I'll still watch Star Wars once in a while when its on.
I've always enjoyed Star Wars. The recent movies have indeed soured the relationship somewhat, but that doesn't invalidate everything else available in the category. From KOTOR to a large portion of the books, there's enough excellent Star Wars material out there to drown Jar Jar a hundred times over if you don't obsess about him and the other annoying details.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway
The next three movies felt like a drama group in Junior High put the script together and they got the nerd whose dad was mega rich to do the CGI but then got crazy with it.
I wont be attending the 3D Star Wars Phantom Menance. Waste of money. I'd rather spend it on beer and friends

The CGI for me wasn't the problem.
The first films were fun to watch because the actors didn't treat the script as a serious drama. Ian McDiarmid and Liam Neeson were the only actors that seems to of had fun with their roles and really let go. Ewan McGregor had to play Alec Guiness version of ObiWan, still he did a pretty good job of it, but the rest approached the material as serious actors and the film suffers for it. Pirates of the caribbean doesn't suffer the same fate with pretty much the same material because the actors had fun with their roles and are enjoyable to watch making the film fun to watch.
Also, the writers should of allowed the series to grow up with the people that first fell in love with it rather than try to capture their children. Most of the painful parts in the films are meant to entertain children. The last Indiana Jones movie did the same and was just as bad to watch. Lucasfilm needs to learn from this mistake. Toy story did a good job of growing up with it's audience .

The three films need to be re-edited into one film with a lot of crap cut out.
