I am struggling with the number of MMORPG choices out there currently. Can you help me decide?
What I like:
- Intelligent content, multi-step quests, solving mysteries and uncovering long lost legends
- Able to craft items that make me a unique and valuable person in the community
- Being able to hold my own in combat even as a solo hunter
- Groups that are laid back (I hate feeling like I'm playing Bridge when I'm in a group - "you idiot why would you play THAT card?!")
- A community that is neither uber-leet nor rp fanatics, but just people who want to have fun
I've tried and own EQ (so far the one I hated the least), DAOC (found it boring and lonely), AO (but only when it still sucked at launch), and SWG (just cancelled cuz they're too expensive for the current state of the product, I er... gave the CD away).
Where do I belong right now? And where will I belong 6 months from now when the next generation is out?
Thanks for your advice.

I'm thinking the same - But WoW looks sweet - I especially like the style of the graphics...
Thanks for the reply.

Illuminate me. What about WoW turns you off - or makes it a lesser game than EQ2?
It's all opinions, of course, but as a veteran on the forum your's deserves respect /kissass off
Aye, EQ2 seems to be all about the new graphics. I haven't heard too much about how it will be an advancement in other areas (except mounts and real estate)
Really, though, I enjoyed questing in EQ - even camping spawns wasn't too bad IMO - sometimes it's better to just have more of the same
UOX sure does sound interesting for someone like me who is quest-intensive
I think your desire for intelligent content alone is going to rule out any second generation games (at least for a while). Every mmorpg I have played (most of them) is really lacking in content on release. Of course if you don't play from day 1, you will probably end up behind the level of the bulk of players and miss allot of the content when it is added, or at least be limited to experiencing it second hand once you get to the appropriate level range.
Most new and upcoming games seem to be extolling the virtues of their crafting systems. However, the more effort dev's put into making crafting fun and rewarding, the more competition you can expect. Since you are selling to a fairly limited market (other players) if you can not put in the time and effort necessary to stay near the top of the crafting group, then you can expect to have difficulty finding a buyer. remember one crafter can produce equipment for quite a few hunters, so for a favorable economy you must have allot more people out using produced goods than people producing them. That being said, at one point (way back in 2001 I believe) AE talked about crafters in Horizons being able to create and specialize in specific/unique weapon and armors. That would help, since anyone who wanted a lightning sword would have to find someone who specialized in that -- not just a skilled weapon crafter. I don't know if their R&D for new item schematics has changed since then.
Balanced solo/group play seems to be on the agenda for most developers. I think most of the newer games will allow you to hunt solo with at least some success.
The last two points are inevitable. You will encounter jerks and zealots in any game you play, as well as nice people. Just talk to everyone and /ignore the idiots.
hmm... all that and the answer to you question seems to be 'I dunno.'
Shots out!
