The overwhelming consensus revolving around SWTOR is that everyone "knew" what SWTOR WASN'T going to be. Essentially, we all apparently "knew" going into SWTOR that it wasn't anything innovative, the same-old-same-old, WoW-Copy & that the devs made this VERY clear far FAR FAR before launch. So, I shrugged my arms after reading NUMEROUS previews, player reviews, and overall "ZOMG" threads. Unfortunately, I've gained enough experience over the years in terms of MMOs to know what I'd be getting into should I had gone ahead and bought SWTOR. So, I didn't get the game obviously.
HOWEVER, a couples weeks have passed since SWTOR came out (pre-release, or release....it's all the same..don't try to color it differently), and now I'm seeing a tune of a different color? I guess the hype died down enough that we're starting to see people agree on certain points that are making them disgruntled with SWTOR?
So my REAL question, and the entire purpose of this thread, is the following:
"Did you settle for something second best because you're bored with the current state of MMOs in general, and you wanted something new & since it was 'Star Wars' you hopped right on it?"
Yea, I get the grammatical errors thoughout that question. However, I wasn't willing to split it into two sentences for w/e reason :P?
Thoughts?

Well OP, I found that out durring OB from experience, though technically after PAX I sort of lost my hype al together but that's just from my experience.
I did immediately jump on the bandwagen because I am an Star Wars and Sci Fi fan in general, and I like Bioware's games except DA 2, and I thought that since it's coming out in 2011 they were bound to have the best responsive combat.
Durring PAX, I thought about it, because I still didn't go try out SWTOR, well once OB caame I thought I'd love which I did mainly with my Inqi, I was hyped as shit, but then it hit me, the gameplay, atmosphere, and feel of combat didn't equal the story experience for me.

SWTOR is fine for me. It was in many cases a bit MORE then I expected. I expected good story. Got good and sometimes great story. Expected good combat and at times I get very good combat. I expected something addicting. I got just what I wanted there. I expected a FUN Star Wars based MMO. I got exactly what I wanted. No regrets.
As for SWTOR being like some other game, who cares? As long as this game delivers on Star Wars-like entertainment and is fun to play I don't.
Let's party like it is 1863!
I think more and more people are just tired of this model mmo. I didn't stay with RIFT for that long, but I found it more fun than TOR and that isn't even much of a question - and I ripped on RIFT for being too much of the same thing. At least that game had some fun enviorments and things to do, like the collection system, zone puzzles, real achievement system, RIFTs, etc - plus the zones felt more alive. Yeah the TOR story is cool, but I've never felt so much like I was playing in a cardboard cut out of a world.
Now I find myself playing Vanguard and GW - Vanguard is kind of a themebox and GW is just odd and weird, lol. Either way both are a nice change
I fell into the boat of "oh man, SWTOR is probably going to be decent. It's star wars damnit.". I bought DCUO and got to max level in 3 days only to find no content at the end of it (and subsequently quit). However, knowing how I like to burn through content in MMOs, I'm treating this as KOTOR 3 with multiplayer and enjoying it. I don't think there is enough innovation and polish here to constitute a sustainable MMO for me, but I have definitely gotten my $60 dollars out of it to say the least. And yes, I'm waiting for GW2 and D3.
For me the PvP falls slightly short of what I was expecting. To be fair, WoW PvP at release was not the best either and it took some time for it to ramp up to what it is now. I remember reading somewhere that SWTOR was in development for around 5-7 years, but wow is at 10+ years of development. I can see SWTOR getting much better in a couple years once they have time to expand the game and its features. They already rushed enough trying to get it out for christmas.
I am only playing SWTOR cause I hate what Turbine did with Lotro. The ROI expansion was the most unfun MMO experiance I have had (and I love LOtro). So that got me looking around at other games that is when I started Swtor. I am really enjoying myself. For the first time I am taking it slow while leveling. I am not looking forward to endgame cause it is the same hamster wheel that Lotro and WoW have become. I hope by the time I get to 50 there will be something else to keep me busy other than doing the same instances I was doing while leveling.
Also I hear alot of people say it is a WoW clone, but you talk to people playing, almost all the complaints are that it isn't like WoW enough, lol. In all honesty it is much more like Lotro Shadows of Angmar- Tons of group quests, similar crafting, story driven. Non tanks don't get kill in 3 shots (always drove me nuts about WoW, if the tank lost agro for 3 seconds it could be a wipe).
Of course it is a thempark all the way and for most people that means it is a Wow clone along with AoC, Rift, Aion, EQ2, Lotro
Really super dissapointed in SWTOR and have been for a while. Less than even today's standard in MMO terms. I love Star Wars and am really sick of companies taking big names with a following and making some half-a$$ed attempt because they know they can and still make money. Stilling playing Rift today and having fun but in all honestly I was hoping SWTOR could be something great while having the opportunity to gather in a huge fanbase. Whatever we've been getting fed the same crap for years now so we've all pretty much became numb to it and except it and still endlessly continue to pay for it.

Second best? TOR is great.
I first didn't buy the game after reading all the BS flying around on these forums, I wasn't interested. A few days after launch, I don't know why, but I finaly pulled the trigger. And I am glad I did. TOR is one of the best mmos I have played.
My 2nd game is Lineage 2; this is what I play when I want player politics in an open world pvp setting with territorial control. I think its the best in this category, seeing how Darkfall tanked with development getting nowhere. (not talking about EVE as it is completely different having no avatar, etc...).
And now when I want a story driven game I have TOR, it's imho the best in this category. I am playing on a pvp server and already had a lot of fun meeting oposite faction players on Tatooine (I'll soon be lvl 30, we'll see how long the fun lasts but till now it has been top notch). The worlds are beautiful. This game has already been worth every cent I paid.
These 2 games together fill all of my needs. They complement each other nicely in all aspects; what is missing in L2 I find in TRO and vice versa. (well, its not really missing in TOR as it was designed this way for a reason and I like how it is - the controlled population is better for immersion, it's a nice change from L2 and when I want massive population I log into L2).
For me all of the other games are lesser games: either they aren't as good as TOR on the RPG story side, or they aren't as good as L2 on the PVP side. (I don't know what I am going to do with my Lotro account, It was only good for the story but now that I have experienced TOR the Lotro RPG now seems rather poor...)
In short: don't listen to the forum drivel, it made me almost miss this gem of a game. Make your own opinion.
Swtor is just a filler game for me.
I agree, make your own opinion. But SWTOR is not GREAT. It's sub par even by 2011 MMO standards. I'm not saying it's total crap but it would be considered first class maybe IF it were realeased in 2009. It was a weak and vain effort to make money off a big name, which it did, but won't for long.

I'm sorry. Did you say something? I'm still playing Skyrim.

I play it becouse the wait for GW2 is so boring
I'm not "settling" for anything. It may be true that TOR isnt breaking any new ground as far as the mechanics are concerned, but so what? I enjoy the basic mechanics of MMOs in general, so I have no problem with TOR being a very high quality game that uses basic MMO mechanics. It doesnt matter what TOR is compared to other games to me, only how much fun I have playing it.
The age has changed, what was enough 5 or 10 years ago is not enough nowadays. Releasing a mmorpg in 2011 without movable or resizable UI is really a courageous design.
REALITY CHECK
Were did you get that sig bro?

Actually I am settling for game of the year.
I hope they open up GW2 beta before long so you guys will have something to do besides try to trash one of the best mmo's ever made.
My thoughts exactly. How dare I enjoy something that others don't...
I actually can't wait for the OB for that game playing it at PAX was a blast bro.
I'm sure once SWTOR fixes the unrespinsive combat for many it'll be one of the top notch current gen mmo's including me as well.

Watch that if you need it English, you'll have to click the flag up in the top right corner.
As for Star Wars, it's a fine game for what it wants to do. They said they didn't want to get too far away from the WoW model, and they didn't. But what they did do, they did well. Story driven, somewhat better combat, interesting world and decent overall gameplay.
It's better than probably any other MMO that came out this year. I am holding out for GW2 ... perhaps obviously. But I will probably play SWTOR when I am done running around Skyrim. And why shouldn't I? And why should I hate on it when I am waiting for GW2. A fun game is a fun game.
There are so many games, and so many non-game things for me to do, I don't ever get bored. If you are bored, you are boring.

I didn't settle for anything. I love it.
Spin it any way you want, pal. It's a great game. It's a fun game. And it's a popular game.
I didn't "settle" on anything, and the people that are playing the game LOVE the game. I know that's gotta bother you something fierce, but you're just going to have to deal with it.
I kind of really want a signature like yours, too, Leodious. But I like my informative-propagandaesque signature I have now.
And SWTOR isn't good. The conversation problem where I never know what I will say is enraging, and the gameplay is terrible. You still have what amounts to an auto attack, you just can't do it automatically. It's just bad design.

WTF? No subscription fee?
Very good OP and interesting question, i guess the point contains more truth than some would like to admit.
I don't agree to the "settle" part however, in a sense that in 2-3 month we will see that alot of players in fact do not settle with the second best, but move on.
Alright thanks bro I'll be using it for my sig in the guild I am thanks a lot.
