Is it as good as everyone says?

Ok i have been contemplating getting the game for a while now, the only thing that is holding me back is character creation.  I guess the problem is comming from playing City of Heroes and unbelivable character creation ability, I am curious if WoW is the same in that respect.  I like to be able to customize my character so that you dont look like everyone else with just differnt colors... That was the one thing i didnt like about guild wars is the fact that everyone looks the same... it just took the fun out of the game... is WoW like this?

I have no doubt that the game is actually fun because i love Warcraft so i am sure i will love the gameplay, but i am worried about character customization...

Wow has some of the fewest options for character creation of the games out there. If it's that important to you, look elsewhere.

Very limited charecter creation, you can choose a few faces & the size, but that is it really. To me this didn't really feel like a warcraft game all you can do as far as PvP is kill the other side no taking over town/territories or anything that makes it meaningful. If you played the past warcraft games like I did, don't let this ruin the game series for you like I did. Stay away, if you want a game with the feeling of war get shadowbane, join a guild, & help them siege. They have a lore server on the way I would wait for that & SB has much more options in charecter creation.

Hmmmm well that is disappointing...  You would think that it would be pretty good given blizzard is the creator and they are usually pretty good with graphics and things of that nature… maybe it is just because I loved the character creation in City of Heroes, it made your character really yours… you would never see two of the same… yeah everyone picked from the same power pools, but the way everyone looked was Awesome! From what I can tell, there is no other game out there like City of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Heroes in the character creation realm…

    Shadowbane has great charecter creation.

The character creation options are lacking yes. But the armor selection in the game are more varied than any other game out there. There are so many variations that you don't see characters that look the same. Unless they aren't wearing helmet's.

Sorry to say it (well, not really), but overexagerated character creation systems are highly overrated, and games that have not so in depth methods on making characters seem to be better than those that do as far as playability goes.  Yeah, it is nice to make your chars look unique and all that, but come on...  Angles of the eyebrows?  Height of cheekbones?  How thick their char's lips are?  Is all this crap really necessary?  Some of it is completely pointless as well, such as early day Horizons where you could select breast sizes for female characters, and everyone was running around with it maxed out.  Yeah, lots of difference between characters there.  image

Another case in point where character creation didn't make the game any better was Pre-Luclin EQLive vs. Post Luclin.  When EQ first came out the char creation was simple, all you had to do was select a premade char model without any say in the char's hair color, height, and all that fun stuff.  It was sparse, but for some reason the game attracted the masses.  When Luclin was released char creation was revamped with all the bells and whistles: facial hair, hair styles, hair colors, different faces, eye color.  I was thinking the same thing most people were probably thinking: "This is hella cool!"  Lo and behold though, PostLuclin Everquest was, at least in my opinion, garbage.

Bottom line, if your selecting your game based on the level of character customization then you're gambling at being disappointed.  CoH sounds about as boring as watching grass grow from what I've heard, SWG wasn't that great on playability standards, and neither was EQ2.  WoW, while not perfect, is still fun even with it's not so advanced abilities to make our characters look different.

While your point is well taken that the playability of a game is the most important part of it, i will have to disagree with you on the character creation part of it... Lets take a step back and ask the question why we would want to play this type of game in the first place... and for most people i would think they want to play it because it is a completly differnt world, one where you can do anything you want witin the bounds of the game of course... Character creation is an extention of that whole aura and feeling of a game... why would i want to spend time playing a character that looks exacltly like somone elses character?  it just looks boring... there is no personality, no fredom of expression from every individual... I guess thats just the way i view it...

I also have to tell you that City of Heroes is quite possibly one of the best games i have played... the gameplay is fun and there is always something to do... things like costume contests where if you dont feel like going out and killing people you can just hang out and win some money if you are creative enough with your costume... it adds a whole new dimention to the game...

It does make me feel better though that in WoW at least you can have differnt armor so there is some individuality there...
