I played more republic in beta. Just couldn't get into the stories as much.
The two best stories in the game are BH and IA in my opinion.
The Jedi stories are kind of boring, except the dark side jedi knight, that is just a barrel of laughs for me. He's just a jerk to everyone. I don't know how they let that guy become a Jedi.

I have to agree, to get any entertainment out of the republic you have to be evil.
I tried to be a good jedi / consular in beta and it was mind numbingly boring.
The good side choices are just way too predictable, whereas the light and dark side choices for the empire are both rewarding story-wise.
I have since made dark side republic characters (to play with some ex-guildies who refuse to roll empire) and they are quite fun.
I'm literally falling asleep on ALL the class quests on the Republic Side. Even the Dark Jedi Knight, but I will say his responses get me to laugh so hard. Especially some of the earlier ones.
And crystals are alignment related. Being one of the first Jedi Knights and walking around with a Red Lightsaber lost it's "yay" ness already.
I dunno, I always liked being the good guy, so Jedi Knight has been pretty damn fun for me so far.

I wish I knew what the draw was on the Empire side. All my friends are playing on the Empire side and I don't really like playing a bad guy. I could play a good imperial agent...but really, what's the point in that?
Well, the main thing is that the storylines on the Empire side seem to be more extreme. If you are a Jedi, your choices usually range from saving a kitten (light side) to not saving a kitten (dark side), whereas a Sith would have the options to kill the kitten (light side) or have sex with the kitten first, then set it on fire, then kill it, then reanimate it, then kill it again (dark side).
Who wouldn't choose the Empire with choices like that?
Oh also...the Jedi stories are pretty freakin' boring, I have to say.

... seriously ... soda up the nose from the snort ... appreciate the burn ... at least I'm not the kitten.
Theres only really two issues with that screenshot. First off you hid the GUI, which shows the population in the area, second you took a screen shot of one little area in the entire zone. That's what the empire area looks like too if you take the screenshot like that of one auction house person and a view of a group of people off to the left. I'm sure the population is quite a bit lower for Republic but come on, at least show multiple areas with the GUI on, because then at least people can get an idea, it will definately make people like me (who like to have high population factions) play the other side by skewing information like that.
UI auto hides with the in game screenshot button.
There was only around 60 players in the place and it was the only instance of the station. The rest of the station was pretty much dead with only a few people hanging out at the storage and trainers and such. This place I took a picture of is always the most popular because it is the GTN and it's always so crowded with loads of people on Empire. However on Republic this being the busiest area is just pathetic and you can go to any zone, only have one instance and it's around 80-100 players max during peak times, though Taris which I was on before only had 40 people.
Remember this server was full at the time I took the screenshot.
They need to come up with a cross realm system quick before the population drops even more. Something where you can all join each others instances of a planet to keep the population up and do the same with battlegrounds too.
This is common in MMOs, the "bad" side is almost always larger.
If it is because people prefer to play a bad guy (probably because they always lose in Hollywood movies) or because the devs for some reason makes the bad guys better than the good guys is anybodies guess.
The evil side in EQ2 were 3 times as many as the good guys on the PvP server I played on, and I more or less have the same experience in all MMOs.
MMO devs should really consider this when they make the game.
In TORs case is probably a lot of the problem that you chooses side instead of playing and becomming one or the other like in KOTOR.
I never really understood good/bad. Sith thought they could use emotions to rule, the Jedi thought they could rid themselves of emotions to do so. It started as such a noble concept until they took it to the extremes. Not EVERY Jedi is good, not every Sith is bad. Moreso the fact that this is the case over entire factions.
I dunno, I always liked being the good guy, so Jedi Knight has been pretty damn fun for me so far.
Anything about the population?
Jung-Ma Republic populations I would say is nice. Lots of folks in the fleet. Perhaps I'll take a SS and post it here, just like the OP.
Yea it'd help give a better outlook with a SS.
Least so people can't claim all Servers are like this. I'm on my nephews account reading the forums it does seem like an huge issue, I think it's a leaning towards being unfixable or adding a race that has an more evil outlook like WOW did with Bloodelves.
I didn't think about that till I saw a guy post that.

I've found the Jedi stories to be more interesting overall. The choices for the Empire are more extreme, but also they seem to be more simple...it's pretty obvious what you should do if you plan on collecting dark side points.
I honestly don't get the fascination so many people have with the Empire side of things...there's plenty of actual, honest to goodness evil laying around in the real world...it makes some of the choices you make on the Empire side kind of trite.
I have a Sith Inquisitor and it just wouldn't make any sense to try to go with the light side on that character...but I guess I'll try the light side on my Imp Agent. That might be more interesting than doing the dark side points. Though occasionally it is fun to skip the dialog choices and just kill people. I may end up with a 70/30 split on my agent. :-)
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Pretty simple really (and many posts about it on the Official Game Forums) - while not universal, think about the kind of people who enjoy PvP, who really get into it, where it is their favorite part of the game, and ask yourself what faction you think they are going to roll?
PvE Servers have somewhat better balance, and I wouldn't be surprised if RP-PvE servers actually favor the Republic. BW will have to look into it if they want World PvP like Ilum to work long term. They've already said they will be adding another "fight your own faction" Warzone soon to help with Empire PvP queues, and as others have said people will eventually roll alts after they finish up their main Character Stories.

So far I've only played the smuggler live and I love the story so far. Some really interesting choices s you progress through the story. I'm on Tat now. I've finished up my story and just cleaning up some side quests. But I'm itching to play BH. Loved what little story I saw in beta.

While both the Republic and Empire are fun, I do find that the Empire side is "edgier", especially if you role-play. I am playing a Female Human Trooper (lvl 31) and a Female Chiss BH (lvl 21). The Trooper is modeled after a Sister of Battle (Adepta Sororitas) from WH40K - very dedicated to the Republic, very moral, a paragon of virtue. The responses are very clear - Light all the way. The BH on the other hand is very amoral. She is in it for the money and the glory. She doesn't kill just for the sake of killing, but cross her and you are dead. At lvl 21 the BH is Neutral in her Dark v Light choices.
In the end, I think that the amoral characters, like the BH and the Smuggler, will be the most fun to play because of their ability to make any choice that suits their objectives - money and glory - rather then some philosphical paradigm of good vs evil.
Bottom Line: This game is a blast however you wish to play it.

I tried playing a republic "good guy" in beta and found it boring.
I actually preferred playing a "good" Sith Inquisitor. It's the whole good guy stuck in a bad situation that appealed to me. I think your choices to be good are much more impactful when you're surronded by evil.
Ditto.
It's a shame, because I like some of the Classes on Republic side better (force powers look cooler, and the smuggler / trooper are awesome). However, their stories and some of the animations are just weak. Noone wants to play a character that spends most of their time sounding like a complete tool (jedi councelor I'm looking at you), most of the voices also make you either sound like a boyscout or a pansy. Again, two very unappealing roles to play.
Now, look at the empire side. For one, they all look badass (with the possible exception of the BHer during certain lvls, which I quite frequently mistake for a poor version of a powerranger). Also, their storylines are frikking cool!
*** SPOILER ALERT!! ***
Mind control / espianoge plotlines. Hunting down Jedi and killing them, choosing Sith Lords to help or betray, it's all really compelling and really interesting. The Jedi, naturally, have the exact opposite to enjoy. I'm almost never interested in the stories, and it's usually more fun to be a 'good' bad guy, rather than an evil good guy.
Sucks to see it happen, but the Republic just aren't as well done as the Empire. If Bioware ever hopes to correct this, they are running out of time and options. I will say that on a couple of the servers it's not quite as bad, but on EVERY server the republic are severely outnumbered.
SW:TOR does NOT inspire social grouping or social gathering.
With the exclusion of the ENTERTAINER profession (Star Wars Galaxies) and the over-all design of this game's unrealistic and unimmserive world, there is next to NO gathering of Player Characters.
People are all off solo'ing or grouped up with friends and hidden in instances.
This is a well crafted, multiplayer RPG. But it is not the old fashioned traditional MMORPG.
Bioware has streamlined it down to a clincal level of linear progression that hides all other players. Its a wonder there's not even an Option in Preferences to turn other players off all together. As seeing other players is nearly pointless and infact, generally frustrating if they're taking quest objectives that you are after.
