WoW has somewhat made it harder for me to enjoy other MMOs. No one has come close to match the fluid combat and performance WoW has, and the polish it has built up over all these years are hard to match.
And lastly, one has become very spoiled by addons, it's quite disappointing when you can't even move anything around in SW:Tor, when you can make things looks exactly as you want to in WoW.

WoW didn't destroy MMORPG's. It merely popularised one design model, and made this accessible to the mainstream population.
The 1st generation MMO gamers might not like that dominating voice of the influx mainstream public that 'invaded' their genre with the rise of WoW, just like fans of other MMO design models than the themepark style that WoW advocates might not like it. But the situation is what it is. There's hope though for people who dislike WoW's popular design: the next couple of years seem to offer a wide range of different MMO's that don't adhere to WoW's direction.

However, that being said, unique restaurants pop up all the time. They serve really good food and have a much nicer community than the young teenager who is exausted and focused on a boyfriend break up...while working the McDonald's drive through.
In the case of the mmorpg industry, everything is fast food now, everyone tries to be McDonald's, i.e., everyone wants a piece of WoW's apple pie. There hasn't been ONE unique, immersive in depth mmorpg released since 2004 (other than Shadowbane or Vanguard, but one is on life support and the other is offline).
Today's checklist for mmorpg fabrication:
1. Does the game have 0-2 factions?
2. Does the game have instanced pvp?
3. Does the game have mirrored classes?
4. Have we made sure that no matter how bad or good someone's guild is at pvp, that it will never reflect on your/their entire faction?
If you said yes to the above, then your product is ready for shipment/digital download.

Actually, after a great workout grabbing a couple Egg McMuffins w/o cheese is a good choice, seeing how it's loaded with protein. Just stay away from fries and sodas you'll be fine.

thats total BS. you completly ignored games like LoTRO, and Darkfall. many games came out after WoW that are far different. I dont want to name them all, but just look at the gamelist. you are narrow viewing the games out there, to only see the games that fit the description of the mmo which you hate

If you play the game and almost every turn you think, hey all they did was copy WoW and add small twist or change names... there is a problem with, oh no here it comes: WoW clones! I know someone here just wants to type up some drivel saying how those words shouldnèt even exist together. You can define it MMORPGs as all fruits some are apples, pears, oranges, etc. Sandbox, themepark, F2P, P2P, MMOFPS, superhero, fantasy, sci-fi, etc. When you have a themepark mmo, with two factions, battlegrounds, purple epics, and pretty much every feature looks like a copyépaste from WoW with different names...
When all the game feels like is a copy cat of WoW for cash with no soul, that's the problem.

The answer is NO it did not. People have fond memories of MMORPG's in the past because it was a NEW thing... They aren't new anymore. I have fond memories of WC3, SC, C&C... But I do not enjoy RTS games anymore. They're just old and boring now.
I really enjoyed DAOC and WoW when it first came out but I get bored with MMORPG's these days... Dota/LoL/HoN is a somewhat newer type of game and I really enjoy those these days.
People talk about community and how it doesn't exist anymore? That's like saying LA, NYC, Tokeyo or any other massive CITY doesn't have a community anymore... NO SHIT, you have 123413241234 people and no one cares who you are or what you do. Older MMORPG's had like 200k players at BEST and there was a much greater chance you could be "special" in that small community.
In fact, what all of you are asking for, blizzard is providing, with server first achievements and special mounts and such to show off and be cool or something. The same exact tools exist today as they did in the past. Guilds, chat channels, and websites/forums. They didn't remove anything that you used to build a community in the past. They've added new ways for players to enjoy the game.

I think I have seen soem mentioned in this thread, Darkfall, Mortal Online, DAoC, or Fallen Earth. Rather then bemoan the presence of WoW, why not list the feture you want in your MMO. I will start a thread, and link to it in my signature, just for that purpose. If you know that such a thread exist post a link and I will add that to my sig. I just serached and didn't find such a thread.

It's not just children...there are some adults that play the cartoon mmo called WOW. They too need their hand held throughout the linerer game play.
What we need is a UO (*Cough* Archage) that is updated, that is a sandbox, that has the financial backing to take on WOW..
With some quests, but not the grind your way to level 50 by collecting 5 wild berries and such, over and over again in a linerer fasion.
We need someone to take MMO's to a new level, like Nirvana did music in the 90's. Forget about the spandex, hair and lip stick.
