General: RTSGuru.com: Why Was Blizzcon 2012 Really Cancelled?

Yesterday we reported that Blizzcon 2012 had been cancelled, ostensibly due to Blizzard's plate being "too full" this year to warrant the annual fan fest. In a new editorial over at sister site RTSGuru.com, Bill Murphy takes a look at why he believes Blizzcon was cancelled. See if you agree! Check out "Why Was Blizzcon 2012 Really Cancelled" at RTSGuru.com!

Condensed Version:   "We don't know.  But corporations are EVIL, there must be a Dire Motive."

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

I'll take blizzs word for why they cancelled, its not like they have to have a conventions anyways.  and at least he mentioned they didn't do a blizzcon before.  so yes they are allowed to cancel whenever they please.

It probably has more to do with it not being a good time for them to make any announcements.  We already know about Pandaria. Diablo III will already be out and it will be too early still for any news on Titan. So what would the convention center around. A release date for the zerg portion of SCII? That would exactly be much to base a whole convention on. Better to just keep focused on new development.

    All die, so die well.

My best guess is that Kotick is pulling strings on the Blizzard side of the company now, and he refuses to let the developers out of their cages because it's not a 'cost efficient' endevor.

You do relaise Blizzard are in actual Game development and business right?  Not party function business right?

They have mists expansion releasing this year, Diablo 3 which is probabaly taking up huge reosruces with it being console as well, SC2 swarm expansion releasing, Dota being developed, along with their next gen MMO being developed, and you think blizzard has time and money to be hosting an event that probabaly costs hundreds of thousands if not millions to host.

Blizzcon has never been yearly thing like they said.  Its only been a yearly thing for the past 5 years and thats it.

    They have

    1) Mists being released and developed

2)Diablo 3 PC and console, probabaly huge reosurces in that

    3) SC2 exanpions being developed

    4) Blizzards Dota game being developed

    5)  Blizzards next MMO, which probabaly requires huge resoruces from R&D and development.

And you people think they have time to host blizzcon every year because you feel youare entitled to it?

I believe its quiet simple they don't have anything new to show nothing at all so why bothered hosting a Commercial Event?

The argument that they are too busy well i think we all can agree that's a load of crap its not like they would have the game developers planing and organizing the whole show that will be done by ppls who have nothing to do with the actual development of the games.

I personal don't care if they have Blizzcon or not its there decision and we all have to respect that. I just wish they wouldn't think we are stupid enough to buy the crap about them beeping too busy and just be frank with us "We don't have anything to show this year" that would be way more sympathetic

Should be pretty obvious to anyone, they don't have anything big to announce yet.  Titan is still not close enough to a release and what are they going to announce besides that?  Everything else is farther down the line than Titan.  My guess is both Diablo III and the Wow expansion will be out before fall hence what is there to talk about.

  • SuprGamerXSuprGamerX Member Posts: 531

Heh , Diablo 3 has been announced since about 2007-08 , we're in 2012 and yet we don't have any official release date. so yea it's in their best interest to not hold any convention what so ever until they walk the walk if you know what I mean...

As far as SC2 goes , besides being a major hit in Korea and the surroundings , it's been a major failure in America.

     WoW remains WoW.

Titan ... why did they even announce it? I'm betting it won't be ready until 2016-17. And by then ,like D3 , it will be a forgotten game.

Really. Who else if not the head devs would organise, would plan, would think about what they will talk, would answer all the questions to the fans? The game directors (see Jay Wilson). The convention is more work than you think and I think they would rather work on the games seeing as they are already a bit behind in schedule.

SC2 is a much bigger success in NA than Korea. In fact, BW is doing better in Korea.

Yay, conspiracy theories! Always fun ^_^ My guess is it's just a money thing and a return on investment or value of return kinda thing; where the consideration was made that it'd just not be worth it this year. I can imagine that it costs a LOT of money, organisation and preparation to make it happen each year.

Although it's typical that it's just this year that they opted for no Blizzcon, with WoW doing less good and expected to take a larger dive, TOR out and other upcoming AAA MMO's expected to be released this year that'll take their own chunk of the market.

Blizz already showed they won't have a con if they don't feel like it, so no need for conspiracies.

"At first, my initial thought was to cry because I'll be damned if that's not one of the most fun shows we get to attend each year as media"

Kind of asked and answered maybe? The Media that likes to pick on WOW not going to be pampered this year? BooHoo, let me go cry that river for them:)

So, let me get this straight.  Diablo III has been in development for 5+ years, and now, all of the sudden they cant hold their convention, because now, all of the sudden, its like OMG -- we need to finish this game we have been dragging our heels developing for all these years....ok, cool story -- Im buying it.

Titan also. 2 more StarCraft packs.

    Another RTS title coming.

I also suspect Blizzard/Activision has something very Origin / STEAM - like coming out this year. Maybe more like OnLive.

I like blizz and most all of their games they come out with!, but i personally think they are going downhill in their games and company. But time will tell

  • RednecksithRednecksith Member Posts: 1,238

Meh, I think they just don't want to spend the money. It's been obvious for a while that Blizzard is becoming less and less appreciative of their fans, this pretty much confirms it. I'm honestly not surprised though; the Blizzard which made all the classic games I love has long been dead and buried.

Maybe they'll have a 'virtual party' and sell tickets to it on the Diablo 3 RMAH...lol.
