THQ needs partner to bring Warhammer MMO to market
THQ is currently looking for a partner to bring its MMO Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium to market.
In a conference call to investors following the release of the company's third quarter results, CEO Brian Farrell confirmed that the high costs of development are putting a burden on the project.
"While the game in development promises to be a high-quality consumer offering, because of the large financial commitment and associated risks, we are being realistic about our resources and we are actively seeking a partner for this compelling MMO," he said.
The game is slated for a financial year 2014 release and was first announced in 2007. Last month it was suggested that the project was up for sale as the publisher struggles to keep itself afloat following years of cuts.
THQ revealed yesterday that losses for the third quarter had grown to $56 million.

40k would make a great MMOrpg...Last week I pulled out my 2nd and 3rd ed books and dusted off some of my figures(eldar), let's hope EA doesn't go anywhere near it.
I still think Star Wars is the best setting for an MMORPG , if properly done, but 40k would be workable
Good call
THQ mismanages itself into yet another "oh shit, we should've looked to see if we could afford this game before starting it" situation.
Wonder how many developers they'll drive into the ground before people start refusing to deal with them.

After hearing more on how the developers intended to handle the WH40k universe, I'm not disappointed anymore if this game never makes it out. They intended to take the huge, multi-faction setting of the WH40k universe into a sort of "Order" and "Chaos" type of deal, just like that train wreck of Warhammer Online. Nobody likes anybody in WH40k. Nobody.

Same. Was excited at first then when I looked more into it and was disappointed. The fact it was going to be 2 factions was the least of these reasons.

Thought I read somewhere that THQ just lost a lot of money on another game not selling well?
saints row or something.
i think the way they have tons of day 1 DLC puts people of buying their games. i didn't buy retribution for this reason, I gather Saints Row 3 has simmilar issues.
Seriously? There was just a news article about this two days ago? Search?
That's not quite what happened. When they were given the license from GamersWorkshop THQ was in a good way. They had a large number of popular franchises that were all doing well.
THQ tried to make a handheld device to try and jump into the handheld market. What they didn't realize was that its not the THQ name that has sold their games but instead the name of the IP they use. On top of that they have had flop release after flop release.
Last years game releases were most notably bad for them. Homefront was a flop. Warhammer 40k: Space Martine was dead on launch and has been at discount price since. Red Faction Armageddon sold so poorly that THQ announced they would no longer make any more of these games.
Usually when you launch a game your share price goes up. With them this year their share prices went down. Their money situation is bad because they produced games that the market was asking for but ones that have too much competition.

Nah, Activision.
Even EA aren´t so dumb that they didn´t learn the lesson of funding a MMO in the warhammer universe with Wow/EQ mechanics and 2 factions last time.
I think it will be a few more years before anyone at EA even dare to think about another Warhammer game again.
My ideal choice would instead be if Games workshop put the money in, they could influence the game in the right direction and they have plenty of money.
I wouldn´t mind if GW canned 40K and started anew with a crew under their control instead even if that meant waiting a few more year. Or for that matter oulled WARs license and had a real Warhammer fantasy MMO made. GW actually know their own world and are very careful with details, I think it might be a misstake to let some "experienced" studio make the game since it seems all their experience tells them is that GWs own often brilliant mechanics would confse the players and the only way to go is by doing exactly what everyone else is doing.
Based on the trailer they released to announce its development, Lead Developer comments (ie: they're shooting for a WoW-Clone, their words btw not mine), and that private screening they gave a couple months ago that was leaked on youtube (think it was taken down a week after I saw it?) the game is better off to NOT find a partner.
Their lead dev LITERALLY said "If you like WoW, Warhammer 40k: DMO will be an 'easy transition'". I pray they do NOT find an investment partner so that this project is completely buried, or at least it's current iteration. We're so blasted tired of WoW-Clones it's not even funny anymore, honestly.

I was one of those dumb*sses that bought WH40k Space Marine. One of the most worthless titles I've bought in years. The initial coolness of the animations within 1 hour of play gave way to the extremely linear gameplay and progression. After that first day of playing the game, I uninstalled it and never went back.
Generally, WH40k FPS titles are bad to mediocre. The only decent one I felt for its time was Space Hulk. And that was a loooooonngg time ago.

apparently you dont understand the difference between someone being able to jump into a game and a game being a clone of another game.
Really, if you think his words meant "this game is a wow clone" your a fool, plain and simple.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
thats funny, since GW, you know, the company thaqt owns 40k, does that in all there major campaigns, and contrary to what the fools on this forum belive, "there is only war" doesnt mean every fights everyone all teh time.
And also contrary to popular belife, you dont have to like someone to ally with them, see, non stupid races that understand that if the others get whiped out they will too, know that siding up is smart, itscalled strategy, apparently people on this forum have no concept of it, same with this little thing called diplomacy.
Really, if you think that the imperials, eldar and tau wouldnt ally together, then you dont know 40k, period, must not have been aropund for 2nd edition where you could USE eldar ina space marine army, and vice versa, and use orks in a chaos army etc etc, so dont talk like you know what your talking about when you dont, seems to be a common problem with this forum and 40k knoledge.
Oh, whats this now? but i thought the races wouldnt work together and simply fought each other all the time?

Actually the developers are quoted something along the lines of, "No one wants to see what a Space Marine does in his time off, they only want to fight."

Oh it's definitely what happened. I was let go from one company they did it to a while back (bought out then ditched after they realized they couldn't afford it) and by all accounts they've done it again this year with layoffs (a fellow employee at my old company even wished everyone "Happy Annual THQ Layoff Day" amusingly.) And now with this article, the trend seems to continue and the poor people working on the WH game are at risk too.
