So how do you guys feel about that news?
"I know that everyone has a ton of questions around our beta schedule and in particular our decision for not wiping after open beta. Let me assure you we have put a great deal of thought behind this entire plan. Our goal is to make TERA the best possible experience. We took a step back from other MMO launches and identified things that went wrong and how we could do it better. Below is a list of items we believe our plan improves on.
The feeling of playing a character you know will be wiped -- it sucks."

They did this with Lineage2, and it really wasn't too big a deal. OB was a few weeks but most people didn't get far past 20. However I doubt the grind will be as bad as L2, so I'm afraid we might see some people reach endgame in beta... I don't see that as good.
Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.
Yeah. It could go either way. It really all depends on what end game is looking like in all honesty.
Let's hope for the best!
Open beta is just a couple days.
Open Beta Test: Friday, April 19, 12:00 PM PST Sunday, April 22, 11:59 PM PST
Combine that with the 3 day Head Start and thats pretty standard for MMO Head Starts these days.
that... hardly counts as open beta. I find no downside to this, its just an extra 3day headstart. might ease up overpopulation in the first few hours of a game you see in starting zones.

While although I agree with you that having a 5-7 day head start is the "norm" these days having an open beta where you can keep your characters from the open beta to retail is not common.
The OBT is 4 days unlike the 3 days for each of the CBT. It's interesting that they are going to allow so many people keep their characters after the OBT instead of a wipe. I haven't played Aion or Lineage so maybe this is normal for those games. I just think it's a huge risk considering you're basically giving everyone a headstart not just the pre-ordered people which will inflate different things come retail on the 1st.
It's also a risk in that if the end game content isn't there you're going to allow more people to have a bigger jump start thus getting to max level faster, which if the end game content isn't developed to where it should be could hurt them. On the other hand if the game pulls people in and they are able to really push some quality end game 5-mans, 10-mans, PVP, Polictical system, etc. It could really help them land a good community which is key in any new MMO!
I guess only time will tell I know I am pretty excited about it though!
I think from a marketing standpoint it seems smart...people will make a character, play it for a few days and maybe get hooked on it then decide to buy the game.
If they are playing open beta knowing their character will just be deleted they may not get fully into it or get far and remember it's being deleted and say "screw it, i don't feel like leveling again".
Just my thoughts really...
Knight Online had a fairly long open beta and there was no wipe there either. Good stuff
People will get to the maximum level and end game within the first month, that is inevitable.
The first Lineage as well.
It is common when you translate a game because hopefully all the really huge issues with already be removed before the beta in that case.
BTW, while I can´t log on to the server right now it seems like getting that german key to last weekend was worth the work, I can log on in on the client and see the server list so it seems like they gave me beta access for the preview weekend key.
I don't know where you are getting this no wipe stuff, but it has already been stated officially on both the EU and NA main forums, facebook, and twitters there will be a wipe after OB.
That's kinda the point of the headstart.
But thanks for playing..
Makes sense to me as well.
I think these guys are pretty confident in their product.. I mean basically almost 3 months of closed beta withOUT an NDA at all. Doesn't mean it'll be a good game, but Bluehole doesn't seem to have much to hide.
They changed it for some reason, maybe you should have actually read OPs link before making the post.
But the link is to the beta FAQ...
Really, do people only read the title and respond without reading the opening post and checking out whatever links are provided?
No point in having a NDA on a released game.
I think it's smart.
It's stupid not to stagger the load at launch and this will move a lot of folks past the newbie areas.
One, it offers everyone the chance to start the game early with no commitment. From there each person can choose if they want to preorder and continue to head start, wait for retail or simply not play. With every game that comes out you hear people wishing there was a trial, here it is and you start with everyone else.
Two, it shows En Masse is thinking out of the box and willing to do something different if it makes sense, this does. They also add some pretty specific comments about how the "west" can effect game changes.
Just not worth my time anymore.
I like the sound of this actually. It will help get some congestion out of the starter areas and I would definitely like to continue a character once I started it.
Not sure of what to expect with this game. From a big fluff bear point of view the animations are cool and I love the art style. The human women avatars are beautiful....been awhile since I played an mmo where I was happy with my appearance.
L2 had a wipe before release.
No it didnt I was there, I remember the servers went down at 11pm and I was back on the same character at around 12.30. As a matter of fact I remember we continued the same party we were just before the server went down in gludin after it went gold.
So no, you are wrong
This is not a bad thing at all, like some people said it will remove some of the congestion from the start areas, it will also probably sway some people to buy the game as they will already have a character.
Yeah I cannot wait to give it a shot but I am trying to not get my hopes up since like all MMO's these days let me down at some point. I think the real issue is, everyone is doing the same thing and no matter what skin you're playing end game is end game like going from Warcraft to Starwars isn't a huge difference.
So let's hope Tera has enough innovative "outside the box" things going for it!
L2 did not wipe after open beta....As far as Tera, there seems to be some conflicting information on the wipe. I'm going to head over to the official forums to just check it out for myself.
I actually posted the link from the official forums in my original post if you can't find the sticky.
Thanks sir
No problem!
So only Europeans will have the wipe after OB?
