SChool could be only the initial area, if the games world is expanded outside the school, in a world of magic with a civil war going on this could be pritty kick ass. Fresh out of school all trained up and owning some dark wizard in diagon alley. Combat would be strange though if made like current mmos, eg wow, you would just stand around throwing magic at each other, need some sort of a cover, fire and maneouver system. IDK seems to hard to implement and therefore a major risk ($$$$$$$$$$$) for companies. Currently companies like Activision blizzard and EA, make it rediculously hard to make a successful mmo, as to be successful you reqire millions of people playing, rather than simply enough to make a profit, they need massive profits.
Harry Potter is one of those IPs that is particularly amenable to being turned into an MMO and the type of MMO that the industry has been clamoring for for years
no? making mmo's based on movies is stupid no matter how good the IP is this just wont fit

You must have forgotten that the movies are based off the BOOKS. Therefore, wouldn't the game be based off the books and NOT the movies? Even more so since to make the movies fit into 2 hours they have to leave a lot of story and background out that the books contain. Basing the game off the movies would thus severely limit what you're able to put into the game.
Plus, if it is indeed Turbine who ends up making a HP mmo they already have made two previous mmo's based off Lord of the Rings and D&D, both of which exist in book and movie form, and both games Turbine has based them on the books and not the movies. I see no reason why they would change their normal routine.
Yeah HP MMO writes itself, but here's my shot at it.
Setting:
Hoggwarts is the TUTORIAL people. It gets u aquainted with the basics, lets you choose you variables and u move on.
So, where do u move on to? everything else obviously. LOTS of different jobs available, and many would make excelent classes, but ill talk about classes later. Locations would include, hoggwarts and the forbiden forrest, hogsmead and other wizarding towns mentioned (and there are a few), the ministry (main area), greece (thats where the chimera are), france? (where the giants are), albania (the dark forest where voldy hung out), the other magical schools, egypt and the tombs there, dragons sanctuary in romainia and im sure there are many other places, including a massive flu network of interconnected wizard houses.
Travel:
Brooms, disapparation, floo network etc pretty much has this covered. Improve your broom for better handling and speed. I dont know about mid air combat, there is examples of it in the cannon but i dont know if it should be added.
Classes:
Wow, this would be fun. Lots of options here, a few just to wet your appitite, medi-wizards (like the dudes at St Mungos), Aurors (dark wizard catches), there are wizard police, game keepers (pet class, start with a oversized spider or something, end with a dragon and a crossbow ), transfigurator dudes (like krum in book 4 when he half turned himself into a shark, pretty neat druidy sorta class), and sooo many more. Different types of spells all over, charms, curses, hex's, jinx's etc. Different classes might major in different types of spells but would have a few of each type, because resistances will be against these spell types.
Gameplay/Combat:
I could easily see this as similar to other mmo's out there, target, skill bar, hit spell u want to cast etc, but i could also see some differences. There are alot of control spells in the cannon, not many direct damage ones, but there are a few. Jinx and anti-jinxes etc could be interesting. Could all spells be undone if i pick the right anti spell? This i think would prob be the toughest part of it. Makng a good, complicated system with depth and breadth. This isnt hard, just requiring thought, thats all. You could do some wonderful things.
PVP:
Simple, join the order or join the death eaters. The great thing is that the members are secret, so you doesnt matter who is on what team until ur away from populated areas etc. Each would have a base of opperations tho, which may be defended etc.
Trimmings:
Magic Items, Grow plants (Herbology), turn ingredients to Potions, become an animagus, wand craft, broom making etc.
well i think that the players shouldnt be limited to hogwarts, i think they should be able to move onto the full world and choose to work for the ministry, stay on as a teacher become a death eater or auror ect. This would allow for pvp and more gameplay and a larger map. Hogwarts could be a sort of starter area/city but players could later return for visits :-) while in hogwarts they could learn the controls and get basic spells as they progress through it. The house the player started in could also affect gameplay later on e.g. a slytherin is more likely to become a death eater but is not forced too. the could also include more magical schools that are mentioned in books or create more.
There could be quests/missions for ministry workers where they must use non-lethal force to cover up magic from muggles e.g. stupefy then confund.
teachers could have to save pupils from forbidden forest ect.
death eaters and aurors could fight against each other in missions and whoevers side wins becomes more powerfull.
the classes students do could be like wow starter instances where they learn basic spells ect
Why in Merlin's beard haven't you thought about any places but Hogwarts, why not make your childhood be on Hogwarts and after you have finished school you can travel all around the wizard world on adventures ? Instead of being only around Hogwarts, for example in Romania and get yourself a dragon or someting lol. This idea in general is brilliant though. And 1 more thing, they should develop it further when there is more life-like controls, like motion control-gaming instead of spamming buttons on the keyboard, id rather wait for that!
I loved the Harry Potter books. The movies, not so much. The only cool things about the movies were the spells you get to see. Personally, a Harry Potter MMO is what we need to recreate imagination within other people. In a couple hundred years humanity will think of everything there is to create in the gaming industry.

I would not play a potter mmorpg. BUT my wife would!......No thanks, the entire idea of a potter mmorpg seems lame no matter how its done.
A man or "gamer" should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be.
