Those ridiculosely inflated "grades" in reviews stopped me to read them.
I still rememeber in 90's ties in my country there was this most popular gaming magazine.
9 /10 maybe 2 games per year got ,and I don't think there EVER was 10 / 10 at least in those years I actually bought and was reading this magazine.
No idea how it is atm ,but propably changed to giving 8-9 /10 to every non-indie game out there
Disgusting.
Mediocrity is the bar by which games have come to be measured these days. Graphics and cinematics take a front seat to gameplay, and content.
Prices go up as polygon count rises, yet games get shorter and start to look an awful lot like their predecessors, and yet game companies blame used game sellers when their lackluster games get traded in because they dont last, or are so overpriced people look for every discount they can get.
In the (good) old days of gaming, "it plays like a movie" was considered a bad thing. Now its used as a selling point. With so many people claiming the crap they put out as being "epic", its no wonder the word "epic" has lost its meaning. When "phenomenal" no longer exists, "above average" becomes the new "phenomenal", and average is a welcomed sight.
It's hard to say what happened to magazines sources like EGM, Gamepro, PC Gamer. These magazines used to be all we really had to stay up on what was up and comming. They were very respectable news sources in their time. I'm not on the inside so I don't know what type of glasses they were wearing back in the 90's and early 2000's. I just remember hovering over the mailbox wondering when my next Gamepro was gonna come in the mail.
In all likelyhood many of those staffers are probably gone from the past. With the mainstreaming of MMO's and gaming in general it wss inevitable that we would reach a point where reviews would become more and more squewed because of the enourmous amounts of money that can be made in gaming now.
Although they will still remain a great source for info, epecially if it's console games (Gamepro is more for console gamers than PC players IMO). Independent sites such as MMORPG.com, Massively and GBTV will more than likely become the main source for true info on the gaming scene. While trying to avoid most of the marketing hooplah that exist in todays gaming.
PM before you report at least or you could just block.

Enter a whole new realm of challenge and adventure.
Why is so hard to you respect other people opinion?
Out of curiosity I searched the top 5 higher reviews in metacritic... I didn't like one Dingle of those games. Still I can respect there are players around that like those games.
I'm not going to say most players like SWTOR but definitely there are players that like that game. If some of the reviewers are those kind of players it doesn't make them dishonest.

Maybe it is just me but I expect a person that does reviews for a living to assess a game on more facets than whether or not they simply like it. Far as I'm concerned that should only play a part in their overall score and assessment.
If it simply boiled down to how much they like the game then why would they need a score anyways? The whole point of that was supposed to be giving separate grades for several factors that develop their overall final score.
You also seem to be under the false impression those in disagreement with the score do not like this game. Which simply is not the case for everyone here. Quite a few here actually.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Just a nother example that you cant trust reviews, their value means nothing and are more and more used just for marketing to sell the games. Even worse if the companies are cooperations with the pressure from stock market.

So? Another clown played it for a 20 hours, got to level 25 and took BioWare press releases and cobbled togethr another shoddy review, like PCGamer did? And when I say press releases, I'm not talking 'tinfoil hat.' I'm talking direct quotes and paraphrases...
Like it takes 200 hours of class story type of junk. No, it doesn't It takes 50 if you (a) listen to every bit of dialog and (b)know how to play MMOs and don't putz around like a noob... And 80% of that is side-quest EVERYONE does...
But, that's what BioWare said in a 2010 press release. So it's reported as a 'fact.'
My money is always on Zero Punctuation. I've never disagreed with one of his reviews. He's more than happy to point out when devs are mailing it in... And SWTOR does...
9.5/10 for levels 1-49 (Although replay value is only good if you change faction)
1/10 for grouping tools
1/10 for innovation
5/10 for PVP
Can't score it for endgame PVE because I didn't want to join a guild and they didn't have adequate tools for random grouping.
Scoring it today, after the euphoria of leveling has gone away and I'm taking a break I'd score it a generous 7.5/10 for it's launch product. If this product launched when WOW launched it would easily be a 9/10 game or better. Unfortunately it's 2012 and the launch features were lacking given the current baseline.

Come on guys, TOR is bad...but it ain't as bad as what FFXIV was. LOLOLOL I remember I posted how ridiculously crappy FFXIV was, and how it is totally unprofessional of SquareEnix to go into beta, worse into service in just a week with a client that hasn't even been optimized, and the fan boys starting claiming I was just another whinner. Well we know what happened with that piece of turd.
As for EGM, I've been a subscriber to them when I was in my teens back in the late 90s. They are a console oriented magazine. They probably don't even have a credible reviewer. I suspect, a reviewer just played 10 hours and thought the game was good enough, or EA gave some kind of incentive to EGM, since EGM is one of the major gaming magazine publications.
Anyways, I give SWTOR a 7.

Personally this guys review is bias. We are humans after all and bias plays a big role. Although giving it a 9 he has to give more pros and cons. If you look at his pros he only lists one item then on Cons lists one item only. If your gonna give a high score like that than at least defend it with more pros and cons and not sugar coat it.
What they need to do for reviews is get like maybe 4 to 5 people to review it and then maybe take the average of the reviews?? Because one person by himself can be totally bias, and or bought! Just My opinion really!
I would give you a guest pass to SWOTR, but then I wouldn't be able to find a way to live with myself afterwards....

Personally, I say screw "grouping tools". They've ruined the social aspect of MMOs by taking away the need to actually talk to people to form groups. This was a step in the right direction I think.
Give some kickbacks to a reviewer that is a StarWars fan and thinks Dragon Age 2 is the best RPG ever made is instant win.

I wonder if their readership appreciates being conned. I'm done with 'professional' reviews on games, here and other sites, been scammed too often by these amazing assessments that don't match the game I've just bought.
I'll stick with genuine player reviews. Sure they're not always well written but least they're honest.
The commentary is fine and reasonably balanced; the author is clearly a casual MMO player who doesn't care for PvP - the exact same player profile who finds SWTOR to be one of the best games available right now. The score is therefore relative to the writers experience and expectations and not for those who were looking for a sandbox/PvP/etc game.

I'm done giving any credit to 'professional' reviews myself. I think a promise of "give me a good review and I'll buy advertisement" has won over integrity.
At least in this review the game has been launched long enough for people to not be so easily fooled. Look at the comments on that review, people are tearing it apart on EGM's own site far more than fanbois can keep up.
Seriously, every positive review of swtor is a paid review? How much money do you think they have really to spend on such things? Lets say for a moment that you all are right, then you cannot trust ANY review, no review from games YOU like because they may be paid to said that.
So, conclusion. Dont read reviews and play the game for yourself and yes, i did play swtor and YES im tired of it by this point. I wanted it to be a good game and gave it a chance up to level 45 with several characters and two months of playtime - but alas, its not a good game. But everyone thinks diffrently.
Still, all reviews are paid to be said according to this site, its rather silly.
