I haven't seen any. It almost seems like a missed opportunity. I mean, plenty of games have it, or sometimes they're only horde mode (Left 4 Dead). But those are mostly FPS's. It would be another avenue that a game could take for challenging PvE.

Could you describe what horde mode is?
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

It's like a survival mode, where you (and teammates) fight against wave after wave of enemies, and it gets harder until you all die. The point is seeing how long you can last. It's kind of overdone in FPS games, but I haven't seen it done in an MMO yet.
So in the end everyone dies and the healer gets the blame? Sounds fun!
Well, duh. It'd be their fault. lol
EQ has it, it's called The Arena Master's Challenge. It's one of the better quests. 41 waves.
The more waves you defeat the higher stats your badge has.
This would definitely be an interesting concept in MMO space. I love Gears of War Horde mode, and they did a pretty good job of adding character progression in GoW3. It would be a nice diversion and another PvE activity that does not involve dungeons/raids/quests.
Adding mutators to make things interesting would be a big plus too.
For a while, that's what I thought the low-level kobold castle seige encounter in DDO was - after the first hundred or so, as the speed of the waves kept increasing, I would always get overwhelmed and just couldn't believe that players were intended to actually complete it.
i don't know if it's the truth but some players say that in lol there was a event like this where you have to survive to the end and don't die

Callous Heart dungeons in Asheron's Call. There's several in order to accommodate different level ranges.

I think you could describe the event on the stairs in Zul Farrak in WoW as Horde mode. all thought i appreciate that is just one 5 minute thing in a huge game
If someone is talking in general chat in a language you dont understand, chances are they're not talking to you. So chill out and stop bitching about it!
Guild Wars has a few of those.
Jewel quests in Granado Espada. 4-8 players.
Zombie Apocalypse in CO I guess. I remember a few years back they said they were making a pve version of that... this ones like....8 players was it? or more? o long ago I forgot

I have seen this in one MMORPG. Its an old 2D game (older than EQ) originally by Nexon called Dark Ages.
...it does have zombies.
There was a sort of horde survival event during Halloween. Your group is fenced into an area while hundreds of zombies swarm you. If you complete the final stage, you get a summonable zombie pet that will attack anything that attacks you.
Wasn't really "fun" (not much in that game is anymore), but the zombie pet is somewhat useful. I'd imagine it would be more exciting in a more recent 3D MMO. Or even a 2D game with better mechanics/graphics.
I guess I've never seen "hoard mode" written out before. Horde, as a definition, means a crowd. I just used the word that made more sense in the context. Having googled it, I see that it is indeed hoard; interesting. Go misnomers.
No, it isn't hoard. There may be such a thing as hoard mode, in which you try to collect as much as you can, but that isn't what is being discussed here. This is about horde mode, which is where waves of enemies attack you and you hold out as long as you can before you die. So you were right the first time.
Several MMOs have had horde modes; I think someone mentioned EQ. Guild Wars also had them, in the form of challenge missions. You got points for the number of enemies you killed, plus some other variables depending on the map. Quite fun, and quite competitive. Horde modes are great for PvE competition between players.
"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."
John Parry, to his son Will; "The Subtle Knife," by Phillip Pullman
You know...ive always wanted this.
An instance (it would have to be instanced) endgame activity where you all will die at the end. Just wave after wave of mobs, and possible bosses (no enrage timer just drop him before the next wave comes)
I envision it as your group is in a choke point between friendly territory and a huge enemy army about to decend. Like 300 the movie was somewhat. See how long you last how many you can kill and how long you can delay the opposing army. Works for any IP out there and cant be all that hard to program in.
Its just so sad that 90% of people here are thinking wows horde when they click on this thread...hoping to troll for a typo (hard mode?)
This really needs to be something implimented in new games...again cant be hard to do, and it just adds to the already avalible themepart rides in games....the more the merrier.
Gw1 has something akin to horde mode, only that you're not defending a position, you're advancing through very difficult enemies. You will mostly find this in the Factions campaign.
This is not a game.
Ha ha. Thanks for clearing that up. The results did show both, but I did see one link for "haord" mode for Gears of War 3. I suppose I could have researched that a bit more. Lesson learned :-P
