PC Gamer recently released this article in their September 2005 issue.

Saddly its no debate as to which game is better. Eve eats EQlite aka WoW for lunch. Also give a look see to the UQS heist article also posted in there. Best hour i had in an mmorpg taking part in that robbery.

A well written article, very good read.
Its also somewhat refreshing to here some in the media take a more objective look at WOW. For a while there many of them seemed like mindless fan boys who couldnt recommend the game enough.
Yep after 6 months i quit wow.
Eve is and always has been my favorite game. Unfortunately, if you work 9-5 or go to school you cannot really succeed much in the vast universe. Of any mmorpg i know EVE requires more of your Real Time and Attention than any other mmorpg. But it is well worth it if you have no life. (No offence to half the crew i know lol)

I just noticed you're with GHSC? Right on!

Yeah, but it's EVE. Not bashing it, but it can be the best MMORPG of all time for all time, and I won't be playing it. I downloaded the trial, and played for a few hours, I just couldn't dig it. Maybe if you could get out of your ship I would be there, but if you can't I ain't playin'. I am not a spaceship nor do I aspire to be one, IRL or otherwise.
And feel free to continuosly pat yourselves on the back GHSC; might have been the ultimate planned out concerted ganking of all time, but it was still a gank.
IMO Gank is an everday part of PvP. You either accept that and deal with it when starting on a PvP server (in any game) or go back to "Carebear Land."

Give me some of the core concepts of Eve, throw them into a fantasy MMO (ala EQ's, WoW's, etc.) and I'll be having a life-long orgasm of sight, sound, and emotion.
I, like anarchyart, could not find Eve to my liking although I have about 100 hours thrown into it- like he said, I am not a spaceship nor do I aspire to be one; I am a human and that's all I ever (currently) want to be. I'd much rather see my 3d extension of myself bashing away at goblinses with a nice two-hander and shooting down huge flying purple elephants than warping 3,000 light years accross space battling other spaceships. Though that's not to say Eve's concepts are great- like a world made by the players, but damn guys, I just find it dull in the deep void that is space.
A little aside: I'd much rather watch my character bash away at rocks with a pick than orbiting around an asteroid firing lasers to mine, anyway. I also would like it to be a wee bit more interactive- pressing the auto-anything button is a big no no for me although I do accept it in most MMOs.
well, if you like EVE in Fantasy, then Ultima Online is (Was?) the nearest thing, especially on their hardcore server Siege Perilious.
As for WoW VS EVE, it is silly to compare the two games, one being an Online Game (also called Online Theme Park) and the other being a Virtual World simulation (well, Universe simulation in this case).
The two genre offer radical different things and different types of involvment. EVE strong points are the community interactions, politics and wars. If somebody play EVE but doesn't have the time to get involved in such conflicts, he won't have much fun from it.
Theme park online, instead, give you a fixed amount of return, no matter how lot of few time you put in it. Yes, more time can still get you involved in the community and stuff, but in this kind of games, that is not THE point of the game, just a corollary.
I enjoy both kind of games, but nowadays my gaming time is restricted to couple hours a day if even those and that limits me in regards of Virtual World simulators, sadly.
Sadly cause i do realize those kind of games offer the highest potential for fun. Nothing has yet to beat my experiences with my old guild and the conflicts we had in Early Ultima Online nor the sensation to actually BE in the world, as opposed of playing a game.

True, but Gank still remains with to be a very big part of PvP no matter how you like to look at it.
But let's look at pvp (in our realm) with such greats as Paton and his Tanks... would you consider him a "Ganker" with all the great Tank Battles he fought? I mean there you have dozens of tanks on either side, but one general always had a tacticle advantage. GH-SC IMO is no different here.
With Leadership, Tactical Command, Espionage and Training & Experience to name a few, numbers are only a small factor to consider towards the success GH-SC has seen. All these factors are key elements in war of Today; and The Universe of Eve embraces this. (As you put it). Sheer numbers have typically played a positive roll in the success of a fight. It's really not something you can Ignore nor critisise for as reflecting Poor Character.

I agree with you Malkavian, as it applies to real life. I certainly won't begrude General Patton or Rommel using tactics to defend their country, but these games aren't real life. I don't have to back down from a single fight, nor do I have to rely on an unfair advantage to survive if I choose not to. It's one of the benefits of not really dying when you die.
If you choose to gank, I can call you a bad person, that's my prerogative. Just as it is yours to gank the unsuspecting/unaware. I prefer a fair fight. But I know that like in real life, as in most games, I am the minority. But even without ganking, I end up on the winning side more than half the time.
With all that said, I defy you to get more satisfaction from a single kill than when you kill a ganker/griefer.
It's the people like blank that give the WoW players and commmunity a bad name. He's one of those WoW fanboys that thinks that WoW is the only MMO that deserves to stand. EVE is a good game, and if you can play for 2 days without getting anything done, then you did something wrong.

Wow PC Gamer wrote a decent article for once, wonders will never cease even if it was just stating what everybody knew.
Really must drop my WoW sub to play EVE again soon, so bored of playing it
Toughest rater in the world
Try to impress me, please, i dare u
Ofcourse, a good article ? The author really needs to learn more about the mmorpg gaming world before flaming. In wich mmorpg arent you a "hero" ( no idea why the author calls the players heros, since there is no hero title mentioned anywhere in the game ) ? In wich mmorpg dont mobs respawn ?
I think the person who wrote that article needed something to show off with, so he started bashing one of the most popular mmorpg out there.
In wich way is he objective ? All he does is say how bad the game is. Personally i think he has little exiperence with mmorpgs. He compared wow to everquest, like every other player who wants to look cool says that since hes friend said it too.
Personally i hate critics, dumb and ungreatful people.
I am no world of warcraft addict, i quit a long time ago. I have played most of the mmorpgs out there and world of warcraft is one of the best if not the best.
Dumb article.
The point he was making was that everything in WoW is based on spawned encounters that are the same for everyone every time. It's a valid point.
If you honestly thought the writer was "bashing" WoW then you are ridiculously oversensitive.
He compares two games that share a huge amount of similarities, and that proves he's inexperienced? Not really sure how that works.
So anyone who criticizes anything is dumb and ungrateful? Wow... Give people a chance, oh Great Font of Wisdom.
No-one's arguing that WoW is one of the best MMO's there is, but it's far from perfect. The writer was just highlighting the contrasts between two different styles of MMO, and IMO the article was extremely relevant to the zeitgeist since advancement in MMO design has been on crutches for at least five years.
WoW is a good game that could have been incredible if only Blizzard had stuck with their usual agenda of refining and perfecting genres instead of going for the easy buck and dumbing it down for the masses.
ill state my reveiw then wow is not innovative. Its a daoc clone. The only thing they differ on is the auction house. Ebay made that they just riped it off. Then there end game is an eq rip off massive group figts aka epic fights. Im tired of clones of garbage. People call it great imo its a waste of time.

Too bad Eve Online doesn't involve any landing on planets and doing 3rd-person-view style like gameplay. Kinda like what Star Wars Galaxies has to offer. I just can't stand playing a 100% pure space game for months after months. WoW or any other non-Eve Online game is still 100x times better than Eve Online.
