Not that i hate to burst anyone bubble but since Bioware has taken over the game it has been getting attention. The return of prepaid cards, shirts, the attention to the classes, ToA, and other expansions has been fantastic. There is a standard of about 3000K players at peak hours not counting bots since they have almost become useless with realm buffer. Also NF is constantly filled with players. You can't go two hours wihtout a keep or tower being attack. For all those that think this game is dead are fooling themselves, especially those that left for ToA. The only thing ToA did was add another batch of items and skill to the game that when used right(like every other ability) could change the tide of battle.

Also those that want it to be Free To Play hasn't played the game before. You wouldn't be able to make it work for DAoC since the main focus of the game is RvR nor PvE. Its works for LotRO because a majority of the game is PvE. For DAoC you can't make bounty points purchase able (which would be the only route for Free to Play) since those are earned for kills and would easily make the game Buy to Win. The reason i am still play DAoC instead of other MMOs (i've tried SWtoR, WoW, DDO, LotRO, even BGO) is because of the great community. I haven't ran into a situation for either items i need or farming i need done OR PvP where i couldn't find a group to work with. A majority of groups also don't use vent or teamspeak so it isn't something someone needs to be successful in the game. Plus there is still the Realm Pride! No realm is evil or good since they are all modeled on Mythologies. There is no PvP that can compair to DAoC so i encourage everyone to atleast try the 14 free trial... especially since you can reach lvl 50 in two days at a casual pace.

Because PvP games makes horrible F2P games since it is more or less impossible to avoid making them P2win.

Maybe the developers of the game think its too much work to make the game Free 2 Play.

I would be back in a heartbeat if the game cost maybe a few dollars to play :P

Put this picture back in the game's loading screen: http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20020424/daoc01.jpg

Then put the game back to this game version: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9e/DAOCanniversarycover.jpg (This is DAoC's first game box or similar to it)

Then we (I and my Dark Age of Camelot Mates) would come back to play for a while and would resubscribe once in a while to check out our characters and stuff too till the day that we die as one our side hobbies.

The game's expansions has reduced any chance in coming back I had to really not good odds. The creation of instances, the introduction to arulite and free class gear handouts all the time from class trainers, Trials of Atlantis is when players started to require players to use voice chat for Raid PvE and nothing was done to help save DAoC's text chat culture from being left out of groups if they didn't join the voice chat and RvR suffered the same fate (Simple Group Finder tools would have solved this), poor quality classes added (Banshee, Vampiir, Heretic, Warlock, etc), the game's world size has gotten too big when it used to be only a couple of places people your level could be, no expansions ever came out that explored the idea of realm invasions.

If I had a time machine I would love to go back and play the original Dark Age of Camelot again or even just go play an Original DAoC Version Free Shard but there isn't one. MMORPG Media is not like most game media, and you can't just go back and play the original game. That is unfortunate too because you can spend so much of your life in them. I wonder a lot at people who play Everquest if they ever encountered the same problems DAoC players did. Or Ultima Online players, or Meridian 59 players, or Asheron's Call players, etc.. World of Warcraft almost was going to succeed because its expansions always built on top of the original game for the most part until recently Blizzard changed it so that level 60 account characters had their protective barrier (which let them stay level 60) removed.

The next MMORPG to understand that players want: a Safe and Stable MMORPG that allows Everyone to play, developers that can recognize struggling portions of their players and solve their problems, to have Expansions that built On Top of the game and not Into the game, or to not be afraid of the game just uprooting itself and changing the game into something else that they don't want, will be the next biggest MMORPG that has players play it forever.

    I sign tht..

Now days Yo almost must be dead zombie to have fun in mmo's.
    Contra the market of mmos
I not that stupid that I think a product is fun just becouse your PR

For the same reasons that UO isn't f2p..............

    1) It's still worth paying for. Sure the graphics are dated but the gameplay hasn't been surpassed by other games. It's one of the few MMO's that offers something different without being utter crap.

    2) The f2p model doesn't lend itself very well to games that don't stick closely to the standard MMO setup.

Towards the end of 2011 DAOC still had about 20kish subs and about 2-3k on at peak times. Also it still brings in new players, not as frequently as it use to but more so than most new MMO's.

Until something comes along and offers something as good or better with better graphics MMO's like DAOC and UO are going to remain p2p because they will remain profitable.

My dream is that they announce DAoC is going F2P... as a promotion for their new MMO... called DAoC2.  Which adheres closely to the original in terms of gameplay but upgrades the graphics and netcode.

      +...it's EA :D

I REALLY don't understand why they haven't done a 'reboot' of this game.  It WOULD be profitable(Well, aside from the fact that Mythic was pretty much completely canabalized by EA).  There is (well, was at least) a market for a 3 faction game.  At it's peak, DAOC was holding ~300K subs - and this was before the wow 'craze'.  A pretty impressive number for '03/04

The only reasons that mmo go f2p is either because they got low subcription base or that its poor made and started as a f2p.

None of the daoc leads work at ea, I wouldn't look to ea for daoc 2 - id look to pitchblack or zenimax online

No, if it was F2P I would try it.

Come on guys, this old coot of a game is sure to go free to play at some point in the future. The sun is setting on the era of subscription MMORPG's. I feel if great classics like DAoC, UO and EQ were FTP then folks would likely keep them installed (who desen't have atleast a 1GB OS drive anyway - or even 2GB - these days?). Beinf "free" makes you far more forgiving and also more likely to jump in here and there to check out the goings-on in game. They can keep DAoC buried in the dark or they can bring it out into the light of day and give it a chance at long-term survival.
