even at a low level, at level 10, just in the cross roads, questing in the barrens, NPC was like you gotta collect 12 bird beaks, I was like DAMNIT, and grinding and questing these birds, I heard the drums of war go off, alliance attacking cross roads, they was every where, I was like aw naw son, aw naw. Even at level 10 I knew I couldnt do much, but whats this? Not just level 60s, not just level 50s, but players of all levels from 10 to 60 attacking the cross roads, knowing the Xroads was a loss cause and running for my life in the distance I saw THE HORDE and not just players but THE HORDE, a whole raid coming in defense of the cross roads, all levels, all races, all classes.
It was a brutal war,as I watched from the hills and the sidelines, AOE was every where, bodies every where, the alliance being pushed back from the X-roads to astrannar, thats when the most epic war occured, lasting for hours on end, Astrannar vs Splintertree Post, pushing the alliance back to astrannar, thinking we won, a raid was coming behind us, as my hunter was picking off the level 10s and 12s to the sideline, we soon became fully surrounded by all sides, even though we lost at the end, even though we all died, even though we were all surrounded we did not go down with out a fight, we did not give up, we shown that day the power of the horde on that server was feirce.

Should have played UO, stuff like this was a constant minus the kill x birds for my Blue Socks of Doom thing. Many younger people have WoW as there UO. It is what it is.
I did play UO and no.
I deem your argument incorrect because Fansy the Famous Bard. EQ>WoW.

Which FF Character Are You?
Pinning the games you have played against each other makes me wonder....
I could tell you epic moments from alot of games I played, From EQ to WoW, from DAOC to lotro, from AO to MO. I could also give you negatives and positive from each game I have played.
If wow is the one you had the most memoriable experience then more power to you. If you enjoy wow who cares what other people think. Its a lesson of life that eventually you dont care what other people think. Self-validation can truly only come from one source...yourself.
I had this epic moment in swtor. In the opening cinematic. Pretty fierce stuff.

I'm not sure I understand the point of this thread. So Alliance held a meaningless raid on the crossroads and the Horde kicked them out of the zone? Ok... and? What did either side gain from the battle, other than keeping low level players from being able to complete their quests for a little while?
Not meaning to bash your story or anything, but battles like these in UO actually meant something and had consequences within the game world. I appologize if I don't share the same opinion with you when it comes to WoW's "epic" moments.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
that was actually a funny read.

The person who posted after the OP ruined this whole thread, shoulda just said "cool story bro" :LLL
very nice post

Good for you, UO made me feel like I was playing my own character not what some dev thought my character should be.
let me make a wild guess. They were... fun? to people who participated? heck they were even interesting enough for a lvl 10 newbie who ran away, that he made a topic about it.
Fun. why is it bad if youre just having fun, and not getting any leet medals of leetness, for your time spent having fun? wasnt that rewarding enough?
since when is it a must for every single moment spent in a game to be closely tied to some sort of character advancement? Or even have 'consequences within the game world', as you put it.
tldr: it WAS his epic moment, it was epic moment for many people who participated in such a raid. And it did have consequences too. Newbies, some scared and terrified would run away screaming, while others would join and try to push the attacking force back. Every newbie (and vet) was in fact affected by such an event, and many of them had fun doing it. It was their epic moment.
Even if it doesnt fit your description of 'your own' epic moments, it doesnt mean it was not 'epic' to some other people.
I think other posters are trying to say while it may have been fun other games pvp actually had impact on the world and its people.
Thats something WoW never had.
That is still extremely subjective. To me all the 'serious pvp' has as much real impact as some kids playing Cops & Robbers. People talk about 'epic' battles in a game like EVE and all I am getting from it is that a bunch of people made up a reason to have a battle that will not really matter.
So you are opposed to role playing in a game genre called role playing games? Also in EvE there are economics benefits to holding null sec territory.
WoW, in my opinion, seriously watered-down what is considered "epic"
Epic used to be a word that had real meaning. Now "epic" is just another word for purple.
An "epic" quest in EQ could last for days because it actually lived up to its name. It involved traveling to all corners of the not-tiny-mountain-fenced-in world and often times involved gaining trust of an entire city just so their guards dont chop your head off on sight.
Of course you had more epic moments in WoW. WoW downgraded the meaning of the word.
PvP at the Barrens was your most epic experience? I'm lost for words.
That's cool. Everyone should have these experiences. Let me ask you this though. What did the Horde gain from this? Or perhaps more importantly, what did the Horde lose from this experience? Experience? Pride? Territory? Resources? Loot? Faction buffs? Reputation? No?
Hmm, I seem to recall UO fights being a little more important due to these things. All you lose in WoW is a little time to run back to your corpse. Again, I'm glad you had such a great time, but my greatest moments were in UO, no doubt about it. Everything had meaning in games like UO, which is why I no longer play MMO's. They have lost their meaning.
The cynicism of this community is a real turn off. No, not just cynicism, the condescending mean-spirited cynicism that looks down upon everyone and everything from some lofty nowhere of importance.
I enjoyed your recalling of this epic moment, and I think I would have also enjoyed the experience.
^ this
EQ/UO gave people the ability to create their own awesome and memorable events. WoW's moments all felt sort of forced, that's not to say WoW had none, just I remember more from EQ/UO than I do from WoW. And I probably played EQ and WoW about the same amount.
Oh and Fansy is awesome.
"They essentially want to say 'Correlation proves Causation' when it's just not true." - Sovrath
There's a reason why WOW is the standard for MMOs and UO and EQ are just footnotes.
I just wanted to point out that you didn't get attacked in the Barrens unless you attacked the enemy. So, no, the Alliance didn't prevent anyone from questing. Now if it did prevent young players from questing, then the 'epic' moment would have some meaning to it. Otherwise, it's just a random skirmish that really has no reason for it.
I also want to point this out to some of the other posters here. When you post something on these forums, they are subject to the scrutiny of others. A forum is a place for people to discuss things. Often times, in these forums, people disagree on things. As long as you're not insulting the posters themselves or being overly derrogitory and trolling, you should be able to post your own opinions. You don't have to agree with it, but don't insult people who do and are trying to be nice about it.
Glad he had his epic moment, no matter how meaningless or fruitless that I think the moment is.
+1 well said.
And as another poster said. What did you have to lose/gain from this epic battle? Not much huh? Guess you never really played UO.
I've seen alot of this lately in the past 1-2 years. People who start off by saying "i played UO or EQ" yet their first experience was WoW. I don't get what they have to gain from such made up stories. As if it adds any more validity to their tales.
I too had some great times in Tarren Mill/Southshore battles of WoW, Pre-BC. It was fun, but in my experience it wasn't so epic. Then again I hold a higher standard for the word epic it seems.
