GW2 and the Cash Shop

PalladinPalladin Member UncommonPosts: 430

I have seen several threads that accuse GW2 of beign a pay to win game. Is this true...please explain. I am hoping this game will rekindle my interest in MMORPGs but if it is a pay to win game I will not bother with it.

My definition of pay to win Item shop gear:

Gear that is only available through cash purchase, thyat give the purchaser an advantage over regular players and not available through general play.(aka UBER GEAR)

I do not have any isues with players being able to purchase endgame gear through an items shop so long as that same gear is available through regular engame content.

I don't understand why nobody bothers to read the guild wars 2 official site. It really makes you seem like a fool, guy. Although, I hope this type of crowd decides guild wars is "pay to win", so we won't have to deal with their crap in game.

Based on leak...eeer... screenshots I saw from a little bird, then nope, it wouldn't be P2W for you.

Basically, what you can find in the item store (again, based on screenshots that might or might not be real) are costumes, temporary boosts (XP, crafting and the like, there might or might not be simmilar in game), pets, resurrection stones that allow you to resurrect yourself (don't work in PvP) and things like that. No gear at all there.

The other controversial feature is that you can buy gems (the item store currency) and trade to other players for gold, the details on how that trade is done are at this point still unknown

What can men do against such reckless hate?

I suggest you read it from the horse's mouth, rather than read it from the horse's other orfice:

    Further clarification:

There is tons of misinformation, and sensationalism being spouted on this site currently, so I would recommend checking the source of any information you read regarding GW2 and their cashshop before you make any conclusions.

Bingo. The less missinformed whiners the better.

Hi Palladin, Anet will not have a p2w item shop.

Many of us will rarely, if ever, use the shop.   There will be small buffs lasting for short periods that you can buy, but player skill will more than compensate.

Some of the items are for our lazier brothers and sisters :) but still will give no real edge to their gameplay unless they have a placebo effect and their actual 'skill' in game improves.

I will budget 15$ a mo...if not used it will create a nice little bundle over a year...

I do have a weakness for pets...so that will be my achilles heel.

The elites of this game will be those that don't use the item shop ... it would be embarrassing, you see.  :)

Well if i had made it into the beta I would not have to live vicariously here on the forms now WOULD I.

Enough with the HATE( you elitest scum) I'm just asking.

GW2 is the only game I have looked at in the past 3 years that has peaked my interest at all. I just want to be sure its worth my time.

You are completely ignoring the RvRvR advantages you can buy with real money.  RvRvR is what many people considered the best aspect of the game.  It is tainted by pay2win now, in my opinion.  Sure you can grind to get the same stuff in game, but that is no different than some of the Korean F2P cash shop models.

GW2 will lose box sales over this, but probably ultimately make more money overall.  Win for them I guess.  And for those who think it won't lose box sales, please tell me who wasn't going to buy GW2 until they heard about this cash shop.  But I bet there are many who dropped off the bandwagon because of it...

GW2 "built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind"
    1) Cash->Gems->Gold->Influence->WvWvWBoosts = PAY2WIN
    2) Mystic Chests = Crass in-game cash shop advertisements

First you said in your opinion. Second it s not p2w in rvr at all, you still need to farm resources. You can t do a damn thing without them.
