I've been watching a few videos of Tera and to be honest, it looks pretty good.
I love the graphics and the combat seems fun and familiar, but..to the people playing in the beta.
Is it really as fun as the videos make it out to be? Or is it just another soon to be dead game?
I really need a new MMO to play and keep my attention, hoping this is it.

Does it matter either way, as long as you get your month's worth of money? That's what betas are for btw.
For example, I ended up disliking SW:TOR, but for the month and a bit that I played, I'd say that it was worth the price for the standard game. The extra month was a waste of money though (for me).
If you're unsure it'll hold your interest for a month, just wait for the open beta and give it a try then.
I really do appreciate TERA. It's different, but not amazingly so. It's combat is different enough from WoW and took out a lot of the stuff that, in the end (pvp wise), frustrated me. Like you mentioned, it's a beautiful game, the combat is pretty smooth. It can be a little slow, but speeds up when the moves are used properly and/or in combos. The add ons look even better down the road. It's kind of generic in it's story, but so are most mmo's if you boil it down to: some amazing/crazy thing happened, some ultimate bad guy/force is behind hit, you have to join forces to defeat it/them. No suprise there, but if you're playing with your friends, I believe this game could last you a long time. A bud of mine is going to join me and I'm pretty sure it'll last us for a while as more of our buds trickle in.
The only problem I have with the game right now is that it's filled with more than your usual amount of people troll'n the general chat. Easy enough to fix by just switching over to your "whispers recieved" tab, but I know this will die down (not die completely, that would be wishful thinking) a few months after release when people have to start paying for it. I don't think it will take off and be the next big WoW killer and I don't need it to be. This will get a good amount of people playing it and it may be a niche game, but I think the people that pick this up will probably be playing this for a bit.
It is very fun! Combat could be a bit more faster and more fluid. The game itself is nothing special. Linear quest hubs with kill X quests.
Edit: not p2p material imo
Thanks for the responses guys ^-^
Does the game feel 'smooth' and responsive as it is right now? That's the only thing that turns me away from an MMO, when it isn't responsive.. That was the biggest turn off from SW:Tor for me.
The only game to have mastered Smooth gameplay so far is WoW in my opinion
Really depends on you taste and what your looking for. Tera is a niche game and will have its own core population. If you looking for tons of innvotion and/or the next comeing of christ than well keep waiting thats going to be a while.
Tera is much more old school than most current game. It has fairly linear questing from 1-20+ and the quest are well quiet standared. However the dungeons and BAM (field bosses/elite mobs) are really fun and challenging with its combat system.
1. if you don't like asian art style probably not the best game for you.
2. if you think standard quest is a deal breaker this isn't the game for you.
3. the game start off a bit slow but pick up at lvl 20 when you do your first dungeon and BAM, some people like the game from the start some think its dull, if you don't think you should get to lvl 20 to truely experience the game th an probably not for you.
Reason i list these 3 is that those are the key complains people have on the game, to me none of them is a issue and i enjoy the game very much, if they aren't on the top of list regarding games i suggest you give Tera a try.
As I said its more old school questing, no faction open world pvp (which i like and find very fun and no faction is a big plus for many), good 5 man dungeons, we got a world PvE event soon, and 4 way server war as well.
I do say try it for yourself, no matter what we say won't match what you feel when you play the game for yourself.
It is very responsive for ranged classes, its responsive for melee too but they kinda hit slow so it gives the illusion of being little less responsive. The bad thing with melee is that u cant aim in different dirrection until u finish attack, so when the mob is fast u kinda miss alot(at least with lancer)
Edit: hope u can understand im not so good with english ^^
To repeat what some have said, the combat can come off as slow. However, some of the moves are slow, but can be comboed and are faster (just because you used a slow move in a combo). To echo what another poster said, as a war, you do get stuck in some actions, but if you do a certain move, you must finish said move. I don't nessissarily want to call that more "realistic" because it's not really, but it also doesn't feel as smooth as WoW, but I know there won't be a much pillar humping and "lock on target and forget firing" like in arenas, which drove me mad.
I like the combat. In case it didn't come across. It doesn't come off as slow to me.
I think it will be an enriching experience for people who don't find the combat simple window dressing and aren't tired of Korean MMOs in general. I personally found it dull, but it's nice to see more MMOs chipping away at WoW's "monopoly".
here is the thing about Tera. like 99% of all Asian mmos it uses the animation as a global cooldown for all skills and abilities. so, wile the animation for that particular ability is taking place you cannot move your character. now tihs is fine for those character that have really fast animations ( like ranger, sorcere ) but for the slower melees ( like Beserker, lancer) you cand defenately feel the "rooted" mechanic.
it's really all about preference. the majority of western player will find it a bit awkward because we are used to the WoW system where the global cooldown of abilites is indipended from animation or movement. however, if you dont' mind it the combat is actually really fun.
if you have ever played Aion you'll know what i''m talking about because also Aion uses animation as a global cooldown. same feel.
as for how popular will it be? i dont think it will be huge simply because it's has a very heavy Asian feel and it's just one more themepark, but it will have a good following of hard core fans.
I played the beta this weekend for the first time. The first thing that struck me actually was that since I rolled a Mystic first, then a Priest I thought "Huh, this is kinda like League of Lengends". I've been playing LoL lately, yet when I went to play TERA, for some reason the combat was similar... don't exactly know why. The political system seems cool, it was awesome to see players with certain flags, very neat. Graphics are amazing and the combat is cool. It was rather easy as I didn't die once and flew off the island. I stopped there because I already pre-ordered the game and since the character was about to be deleted I stopped playing. I was lagging when everyone was in the starting zone, yet afterwards I could play on highest settings with minimal lag.
I haven't tried PvP at all, yet I'm still going to give it another go at open beta and most likely will keep the preorder. The other game I'm going to get is GW2, and having just discovered League of Lengends (and not having played any Starcraft II yet), I think I'm good for games. It doesn't take a lot to win me over really.
I had fun with WoW this summer, then SWTOR came so I switched, and it was fun until 48, I actually enjoyed the PvP. Yet I just couldn't bring myself to re-suscribe. So, TERA, LoL, GW2 and Starcraft 2, with some Sega, and SNES emulators and CIV 5, I'm happy.
I think with the lancer "that's ok". if a character is gong to wind up and charge then they shoudln't be able to stop on a dime.
Berzker on the other hand has a slight 1 second "rest" before eliding into some skills. At least at the really lower levels. It was driving me nuts as I would hit the next skill and have to wait while the character "felt" it had come at rest.
Otherwise, for the most part, I like the speed of the combat. I actulaly don't understand why it should be faster? (for those who want it faster.)
On topic, I dont' think it has to get anywhere. As long as it makes the money it needs to then I'm satisfied (and hopefully the devs are satisfied).

As a beta tester, i even ask myself if the combat will ever get old.. but currently the combat is fantastic and fun, and really fun to watch and do. Tera is a Asian style game so remember, there is a minor learning curve from American MMO's to Asian MMO's. The diffences are slight, but still present.
As i recall, Tera will be having an open beta at the end of april, so be ready for it. Besides all that, tera is a game you really have to find "Your" class in, each class has its base of people that would enjoy it, if your playing the wrong class you could find yourself lacking the joy as a first time player. The PvP in the game, i havent tried it out a lot, but still is intresting, and a good aderaline rush when you PvP.
I say Tera is a 100% Try It
and about a 60% Buy it
just the biggest question is:
"How long will this type of gameplay last"
On the other hand yet again, the game is smooth, visuals are nice, and easy to handle.
Because of console controls will not keep subs over the first Month.
MAGA
What is with you and console controls? Tera controls much better with mouse a keyboard. In any pvp situation the guy using a controler going to be at an disadvantage. Get over it, it works better with mouse a keyboard, just because it can use a contoller if some one wish to doesn't mean its console controls.
If anything people play the game for what is it, your the only person who even bother bring up controller.
The game works amazingly well for pc so I'm not sure what you are talking about?

Above comment/quote is insignificant, disreguard it, the controls are perfectly fine, and nor did i ever consider that
"Maybe console controls would be easier for this game"
I got a key off this site and tried the beta this weekend.
the game looks terrific and the unreal 3 engine really does this game justice. wide open areas look great and runs perfectly smooth on a mid range pc with all settings maxxed out.
The characters all have a distinctive look, and animation for them in game are all different i.e when running. The armour sets looks cool and weapons look good, apart from the heavy re-using of models with another colour scheme applied.
Levelling I found quite tedious as its the same old model of, run here, kill x mobs, return for useless reward + xp.
combat was OK - I was expecting more as this is supposed to be the big hype about the game "true action combat" .. however with a Warrior i found plain old tank and spank with a dodge here and there worked perfectly fine. I tried all the other classes for a short period and found the combat to be similar to older mmo's, with maybe a bit more movement involved.
The city was huge with lots of different areas. seemed to be quite well designed with hubs for players to pvp or talk shit.
the negatives for me was that after 2 days of playing, im bored with the game already.. there is nothing new really, and the pretty graphics, or actually better graphics, is to be found in Aion already.
all in all, a good game albeit quite boring and linear.
will give it another go if it ever reaches F2P
Sorry I too did not like the UI. I thought it was a step backwards. The graphics were nice but graphis do not make the game.
I happen to like the asian style of artwork and it was great. The game play is just another repeat of Lineage 2 and the game is just too linear for me.
LOL the catana run like the dark elfs in lineage 2. I will not be playing.
It's ok that you don't like the game, not all have the same taste... but if you think Tera plays like Lineage 2. Then you haven't played neither of the two games.
It's like saying the gameplay of Super Mario is the same as let's say Skyrim.
"If I had a d*ck, I'd go get laid. But we can do that next best thing... Let's kill people."
TERA will be lucky to keep 200k subs past 6 months. If I were a betting man I would wager that it goes F2P around Xmas.
The fact is that most Americans/Europeans dont wanna play Asian games with an Animu theme. It simply wont catch on in America and it will be buried underneath the weight of games like GW2, TSW, and Diablo 3. TERA=DOA
Are you on drugs or have you missed the hundreds of FTP asian games available that are profitable and that are played in america.
It astounds me that the community of this forum thinks the majority of mmoers play western games when maplestory is thriving with content and has millions of players in america.
If i were a betting man i would wager than the number of people that play asian games is higher than the subs of WoW and every other p2p game combined
Except that tera will be p2p and should not be at all. If it was ftp it would have a minimal chance, until then it will have vanguard like numbers soon after release in the west IMO.
Im not saying it will have huge numbers, but he was saying that americans dont play asian games which is completely false.
It doesn't need to be like F2P games where it need tons of subs because only tiny fraction of it use the cash shop. Tera can surival perfeclty well on a 200-400k sub. If swtor can make money with only 500k sub after a year. Tera definally can profit and thrive every well with 200-400k sub. swtor cost about like 4-6 time more than Tera to make.
Had a chance to play CB this weekend. I must say that it didn't meet my expectations after all the hype. Again this is just my opinion. I wouldn't pre-order it, I would wait until it goes F2P tbh. It's not nearly as polished as some of the other F2P titles out there imo. And while it does have some obvious differences from some of the other games out there those differences don't make it something that I would buy and then subscribe to.
I wonder how many folks that have purchased already and thus are now automatically in all the closed beta testing are wishing that they hadn't purchased the game.
