I spilled water on my pc monitor!

GoerillaGoerilla Member Posts: 91

I spilled some water on my LCD LED ACER 23 inch monitor. I didn't even wash it at first and just turned it off. After about an hour i turned it back on and on the bottom of the screen was colorful blinking lines on it. After another hour the entire screen was covered in colorful lines. The next day when I turned it on, in addition to the lines and there were big black dots. Do I have to buy a new monitor?

I heard if you dry it, it can go back to normal. I just wanted to know if that was possible.

I guess technically you dont HAVE to buy a new monitor. But unless you enjoy colorful lines and black dots you probably should.

Umm, no offense but, unless you are playing a fantasy MMO on you busted screen, AND you REALLY DO beleive in magic, i dont see it happening, m8:)

I've had friends who'd have similar problems with their screens, and never heard of it ''sorting itself out'' like that.

BUT HEY, who knows? Let it dry for a few days......

PS; let your screen dry,, now that sounds kinda wierd:D

The first rule of wet electronics is, don't let them get any power.  Turn them off immediately, and then unplug them immediately.  Remove batteries if relevant.  Wait until they are completely dry before turning them back on.  Not just dry to the touch externally, but no interior water, either.  Try to pour water out of them if you can to speed the process along.  At minimum, you should wait days, not hours.  I'd recommend waiting until it seems completely dry to you, and and then waiting another day or so after that.

Water usually won't damage electronics so long as there isn't any power to them.  But if they're turned on, water will create all sorts of short circuits and can fry them quickly.

If you wait until the monitor is completely dry and then turn it back on, it might work properly again.  It probably won't, but you could wait a few days and see.  It's a lot less likely that the monitor will be fine than it would be if you had turned it off immediately and left it off until it dried.

Thanks for a real answer quizzical. I"m already looking for a new monitor in case it doesn't work but I'll have to see about that. I'm gona let it dry for about a week until I turn it on again.

You could also try putting it into a box and pouring rice into the box.  Leave it in the box for a few days. The rice will pull moisture out of the interior, acting as a dessicant.

It's embarassing how I spilled it in my monitor. I was playing starcraft 2( never play that game) and as usual I got cheesed and lost so i raged as usual slamming my computer desk splashing water on the monitor. It was barely any so i didn't even clean it. How stupid of me.. After i turned it on an hour later it started to become like that.  I guess I'm gona have to learn my lesson the hard way if i have to buy a new one.

Oh and Waldocorn I have no idea what you are talking about sorry.

For me it's keyboards, Usually I just dont hit a key/unplug let sit for a week, and all is good. Unfortunately I get the odd Ninja splash, from across the room, or  moths pee, or maybe the cat does it when I leave the room,IDK, but go through boards at a regular rate.

Quizzical is so calm, informative and rational at times I wonder if he is even real. Or just some computer AI that has been let loose on the world. Mission being to prevent people from buying bad Power Supplies for the computers they are building o.O

Don't, as that will completely fry it and very, very quickly.  Incidentally, an oven would also be a very bad idea, but not immediately catastrophic like a microwave.  If you're in a hurry to make it dry faster:

"You could also try putting it into a box and pouring rice into the box. Leave it in the box for a few days. The rice will pull moisture out of the interior, acting as a dessicant. "

I think it's supposed to be uncooked rice or some such.  The idea is, something that will absorb quite a bit of moisture.  If you happen to have a dehumidifier available, that would also work.  But simply leaving it to dry for a longer time will work as well.

Drying it faster won't reverse damage and is unlikely to even prevent further damage.  But it will let you find out for certain the extent of the damage sooner.

I can confirm this. My mother always does this with wet monitors as well.

Buy a new one.  Electronics can survive water but not when they are turned on.  The putting an electronic item in rice trick only works if the device was turned off and got dunked in water.

Actually the uncooked rice will work.

My daughter dropped her cell phone in the toilet while drying her hair. We pulled the battery out of it, put it in a bag with dry rice for a day or two. Put the battery in a few days later and it worked fine.

Of course it could have just been dry by then I suppose. But the rice didnt hurt anything and more than likely helped pull out the remaining moisture.

And hopefully the OP would know not to put it into a microwave or oven. But one can never be sure I guess.

I had a handicapped relative who put the little "easter"  live baby chickens into an oven to dry after her mom had given them a bath o.O

What can I say? A typical case of wrong friends at a time when I was susceptible to bad ideas.

My friends first got me into mmorpg gaming. It started innocently enough with lobby games. Everyone was doing it and we were young; we didn't see the consequences. We were just looking for a good time.

It started out with casual sessions but before I knew it I was chasing dragons 24/7 and a hardcore sandbox addict, trying to get the money together to pay for my habit. I've lost many of my former friends over the years. It's a grim tale of suburban drama.

But that's all past me now, since Tardcore came in my life.
