When I die, I'm kicked to my bind point. I then right click the monument and have my corpse brought to me. After that I rightclick the tombstone and everything is back in my bag.
Is there a reason these steps exist? Is there a penalty for doing this rather than going back for my corpse?
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

You take a loss in xp everytime you click that altar. If you run back to your tombstone and pick it up you do not take as large of an xp hit.
Good to know. Thanks!

You recover about 80% of your xp if you get your tombstone.
Also, with tombstones, people can die, release, get repairs etc and then can be resurrected again. Very important also for raids, because this way you can get civic buffs again after a death during raid.
This.
