Tera the only game that took a step in the right direction so far?

Usually I am not pumped for next gen mmorpgs as each one I am playing when its released is the same old garbage as the last but atleast TERA stood away from the dreaded faction system, I think factions in mmorpgs just ruins the community even more, breaks immersion, and just not needed, no factions allows for more drama, more rivalries, politics and a closer core to the game itsself. This is not a thread about tera but tera did a good job breaking away from this, same can be said for age of conan? But that game had other faults.... but more mmorpgs need to leave the faction system alone.

GW2 did the same thing for exactly the reasons you listed, and I agree with the decision made for both games.  I think the community will be stronger for it.

LotRO eschewed factions, did it not? There is monster-play, but that is a bit different, I think.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Not having factions is good not only to have a more close comunity but also about the content, wen making a game with 2 factions, like Wow or Aion you need to have 2 big areas for each faction to lvl without being bothered by the others, its ok to have common areas to fight but it can get anoying if you get ganked all the time, not having factions enables the developers to make better and more content without the need to duplicate it.

It works for some I suppose.

I have always hated FFA PvP, it just seems pointless. People claim that it forces alliances and all other sorts of politcal bullshit, but really its just a game with pretty much no real life or in game consequencese, so people will act like dicks.

So what you see in reality in FFA PvP is just griefers and zergers.

I have yet to see a MMO with the right amount of risk vs reward for FFA PvP to discourage that sort of unrealistic behaviour.

I mean, in real life do you kill anyone you see that you think you can beat? Hide outside their work and beat them to death with your friends when they leave by themselves? No? Its just stupid. What is the point of having that in a virtual world?

There needs to be a reason for PvP. Whether it be racial factions, guild alliances or some sort of murder system that actually works.

totally agreed, PvP should have an influence in the world instead of being just a bunch people ganking each other, claiming territories should have an impact in economy at a global level, the simple fact of doing PvP should be expensive, not talking about gear, i mean, alliances or guilds or whatever should think strategically before trying to invade an enemy or neutral territory, PvP equipment could be a bit cheap but it would have mitigation as the other gear, so you would have to repair it or even buy it again.

i do agree that pre-made factions are a terrible thing to force players into.

i even hate them in small-scale multiplayer team games.

Now I might agree with this if players could create factions and take land like in EVE, but as far as I know you can't in Tera so all I can do is hope that it doesn't even up like LOTRO or DDO where ever is just basicly on the same side and pvp beyond pointless.

Personally I think the community will be weaker for it.   Poeple need something to ally against and no NPCs are an answer.   I made friends in both SWG and WoW in pvp because I was fighting with the same people against the same people.   Do I care why they were against me or on my side?  Nope just cared that I know who was on my side and not.

That being said I am still going try Tera tomorrow.

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.

Splitting players and communities into factions is a terrible and old idea and am happy it seems to be going away.

There are games where factions make sense. Especially a three faction system like in Planetside 2. Planetside would not make any sense at all without factions.

For your average run of the mill themepark mmo though, there needs to be a good reason for factions. I think SWTOR for example has to have the separate factions. Wouldn't make much sense to have Sith and Jedi inthe same side.

I always thought Fallen Earths faction system was cool, although it was a bit convoluted. But yeah they had like six factions or something crazy?

    The Secret World - Dragons

    Planetside 2 - Terran Republic
