Now I know why D2 fans won't like this game

Firstly, they are making this game tailored for the WoW audience.  Remember those stats you could increase every time you leveled? Gone....they auto increase.  Remember skill tree's ..customization? Gone.  You gain skills when you level, no more tree's.  Now some may argue that the rune system gives customization but honestly your skills are still skills, the runes just make them more or less useful for certain enemies.  The combat can be fun but I am highly dissapointed with Diablo 3, and after testing I don't think I will be purchasing it.

Playing some D2 waiting for the D3 servers to come back up.  Loving it.  As the poster above me said, please don't speak for me.  Thanks.

I can't even get mine downloaded there's so many errors with the patcher. My roommate on the other hand got in without problems somehow, so take that w/ a grain of salt. After watching my roommate play for a few hours the above poster is absolutely right. Diablo 3 has gone WAY off the reservation. They really did incorporate a ton of WoW into this. Between my patcher, the marriage between diablo 3 and WoW, and no pvp at the start - i don't know if i'll be buying either.

The Tera open beta is currently underway.  You might care to try that while you sort out your launcher problems.  There is quite a bit of PVP in that game and any characters you make this weekend carry over into retail.  What you got to lose?

Not to mention all the cooldowns! Damn, no such thing in D2 (almost non)

Yeah I was kind of disappointed and I loved D2, I thought I would love D3 too but it's so different. I guess that could be a good thing and a bad thing. The systems have been updated to fit today's "casual" style and I guess that could hit a larger audience. D2 will forever be great to me, and a classic.

Yes, some are claiming they don't have any "customization" like in D2 but that really was an illusion of choice.  If you went outside the cookie cutter builds you weren't going to be effective at the highest difficulty in D2 so it's a false dilemma.

The internet is an amazing platform for some people to showcase their deficiencies as a person.

Nothing personal, but I really hate every time someone comes up with this idea/perception. I mean, I play WoW and EVE (also trying other mmos atm), where do I fit? the mindless WoW audience or the ultra-hardcore EvE audience? image

I didn't play D1 or D2 (wasn't fan of H&S mechanics at that time), however I can undertand D2 followers disappointment given the changes you mention.

On the other hand, D2 was released in 2000... I bet most kids today haven't played it and some don't even know what it is. So, instead of 'WoW audience' I would say something like 'casual', 'young', or even 'h&s-arpg-inexperienced' audience (my wife loves WoW, but she didn't like D3 beta).

  • The stat allocation in Diablo 2 was dumb. It was just there to screw you over if you didn't pick correctly. The skill tree was interesting but the new skill system is vastly superior since it allows for much more customization. Only I wish they didn't make it so easy to switch builds.

Like many others here I'm also a long-time Diablo and Diablo 2 fan who simply loves the new game.

bugger effective. how about having fun and playing around?

Well if Diablo 3 is bumming some people out, its not like theres a dearth of clones coming out or already released. Torchlight 2, Path of Exile (free to play in beta), or can always fire up TitanQuest again. Myself, I'm getting D3 with the WoW promotion so although disappointed somewhat with the games direction, I will still play the hell out of it.

Really should check out Path of Exile though. Deep skill system, challenging and addictive gameplay. Check it out! http://www.pathofexile.com/

I call BS on this one. Seriously, in what way does it offer more customization? Yes, in D2 there were those cookie cutter builds (usually designed for pvp), but you could engineer classes to play completely different from one another. One example of this would be the amazon. You could set them up for bows or xbows (usually w/ penetrating arrow), you could also try and turn them into a javazon. Druids could go w/ shapeshifting (easymode) or elemental damage. Sins, could go traps or more combos. Sorcs had a HELL of a lot more customization than the new wizards do. I played w/ a lot of people who would either go fire, or fire ice, or lightning ice, or lightning fire, or all 3. Nowadays you get mostly lightning, because of the hacks & again pvp, but that doesn't make it the best build for pve, especially if you aren't cheating.

Honestly, the skill system in D3 removes choice from the player, it doesn't give you any more customization. This should be fairly obvious. The stat system AND gear system are exactly the same way. It's all right there in the open to see. Having fun w/ the game? great! It doesn't change the fact that this game has been dumbed down to ridiculous levels. As with any game, people will enjoy it, hell people enjoyed ME3. It doesn't make it a good game.

TERA is a piece of crap, and why people point to OTHER games that are NOT Action-RPGs as an "alternative" game they might like is rediculous. Diablo 3 is NOTHING like Diablo 2, and yes it was made for the WoW-kids in mind.

    Diablo 3 is completely disappointing.

Sirphobos is simply repeating the same dead-horse counter argument that he read somewhere else that's being repeated on these forums. The facts are that there were OVER 104 different "usable" builds. Paladin had about 19 of them.

So claiming that there was an "illusion" of choice is bullshit. There was so much choice in Diablo 2's system it's not even funny, and you could personalize your character the way you wanted UNLIKE in Diablo 3. That rune system is horribly worthless, and it's actually pathetic the more you delve into it. Only 12 runes are worth using, and even then they're half-assed in terms of use for specific skills.

What is the most BS about this game is the fact that it is Mainly Single player and yet as of now its player caped... I mean really Blizz player caping a single player game is just fu##ing mad.  I can understand the multiplayer side of it  But for someone who is not or will not be playing multiplayer side of the game This should Never be a problem for them.   Nope tthey have to have it there way if our Multiplayer servers/ log in servers go down now Noone can play .

The fact of the matter is Name 1 online game were the servers have never gone down?  Servers should NEVER get in the way of the single player aspect of a game. And for D3 it is impossible because of the way they have it setup..  And in anycase they have what less then a month now?  So no they may get a few hickups out of the way but this is the product your getting on release.

Actually people are saying it was made for the WoW audience because... well it was. Two major things tell us this.

    1) It's incorporated enough from WoW many of us have trouble seeing it as Diablo anymore.

    2) You get the game free if you do the anual WoW sub.

While your Wife may like WoW and not D3 that really doesn't change the fact that WoW players seem to be the target audience hence many of the changes and design decisions.

You don't fit anywhere.  You are just a gamer that enjoys playing video games.  You play what's fun, which is what most of us do :)

Personally while I did enjoy D2 a ton, I think I will probably enjoy D3 too.

Heh , the only thing that concerns me about D3 (which killed D2 btw) are the super rune words , and I hope to God that there won't be any super bullcrap of any sort , otherwise it will suffer the same fate as D2 with the 1.10 patch release.
