Edge have just reviewed Amalur. Edge is a games magazine staffed by real journalists that can actually write. Some of the interwebz 'journos' (I use the term very loosely) could learn a thing or two.
It should be pointed out they will use the whole spectrum of marks rather than just 7 8 9 or 10, a 7 is a decent mark for them. I think they pretty much nail it.

Personally I'm quite enoying the game for what it is (well so far).

So they gave it a six? Out of what? One of the better worded reviews out there but I can't really tell if he likes it or not.
EDIT: Game is growing on me. I would have given it a low four (out of ten) at first but after playing it for a few days I am enjoying it more. Game really opens up after you get away from the "starter" town.
I would give it a six (out of ten) right now.
Still WAAAAAAAY overpriced though. I got it off Gamerkeys.net for about $30. It's worth that. No way in hell is it worth $60. No way. In hell. No. Hell no.

Thier reviews are out of ten. Like any marking system not so useful unless you have some familiarity on how they mark and that they mark consistently. That is why people on forums saying "I give it an 8" means nothing whatsoever except to themselves.
Of course some sites marks are completely worthless as they are not consistant, not based on any objectivity and only use 7 8 9 or 10's.
Leaving marks aside he does raise some intresting points.
Amalur is a really fun game, I've been enjoying it so far. I'd give it a 7-8/10 so far. It's pretty much the love child of fable, and skyrim. To me, it's worth the $60.00 price tag. Besides, I've paid full price for a lot of games that weren't worth the money. But that's just pretty standard as of today. $50-60 price range.
Still though, the combat is enjoyable and I'm liking the crafting system quite a bit. The fact that you can actually make your own gear and it's relevant through out the entire game is a big plus. I really hope they transfer that kind of system over to the MMO version of this world.
My big problem is I cant raise detect hidden and smithing fast enough together....I need detect secret door damit as I know I have passed some. I could use a couple more points in sagecraft too!

None whatsoever. Never mentioned it before in a thousand plus posts
heres the skinny. I am getting rather disenchanted with some of the 'reviews' that pass for the norm on sites like ign and even here to be honest. They seem to think that cutting and pasting a bit from the press pack and then gushing and fawning without actually making any real observations of the game passes as journalism. The IGN review was particularly egregious, copletely devoid of any real content. (You can probablly find the thread a few pages back).
I guess that's one of the issues when barriers to entry are so low. I wish someone would start a games portal with grown up journos producing grown up articles rather than a whole bunch of fluff pieces and gushing reviews for publishers that just happen to be advertisers too.
Not going to bore you folks with my review, but will step in and say, even though it is not to my usual "artistic" liking, I am thoroughly enjoying the game. I wasn't real fond of the starter area, but the story seems to have become more entertaining, perhaps a bit deeper. As far as 60 dollars? Well if I get bored after 50ish hours, I would say I got 60 dollars worth. 50 hours of entertainment for $60 is extremely good this day and age, but, that's my opinion I guess. I find that alot better than most typical console games, $60 for 10 hours........
How is this anymore "real" than any other review?
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
Edge magazine is notorious for low score reviews, while IGN or Gamespot aren't any more creditable, Edge goes the opposite way. They gave Witcher 2 and Fallout: NV a 6 for example. Stay far away from Edge, I'd say wait for a Giantbomb review or head over to The Escapist. Those are "real" reviews, giving a game a low score just for the sake of it doesn't make it "real" or "honest".
Even though the Day 1 DLC left a bad taste in my mouth, i have to say, i am really liking this game way more than Skyrim or Dragon Age games. I am playing on the PC btw. The sheer size of this game is quite impressive and they fixed the numerous bugs i saw in the demo, most notably the post processing black screen and the input lag on the special moves during combat.
Speaking of combat, in a word, it's awesome and rewards twitch based players. Timing the block right rewards you with a parry knocking back enemies and u can mix and mach combos using two weapons at a time like Devil May Cry (launch a mob with a dagger combo and swicth to shoot at him with ur bow while its still in the air). The stealth kills are also nice.
The story is your usual RPG fare. The game started out as an MMO and it shows with it's high number of go fetch/kill quests, of which, there are way too many, and its easy to get overwhelmed if you pick up everything you come across. So far the tedium in doing them hasn't kicked in, thanks to the combat and changing locals (yea im looking at you Dragon Age 2).
The cartooney graphics and art style are going to be a matter of taste, and really arn't a problem for me as i count games like Dark Cloud 2, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 9 and Tactics as some of my all time favs. Recent ones being Torchlight and obviously... Deathspank (^_^) Yea it's not a drop dead gorgeous bombshell like Skyrim or Crysis 2, but then it's not so bad that i can't bear to look at it.
Took a gamble and picked this up Day 1 in spite of my horrible demo experience, because i am a big fan of Salvatore's fiction. And while this ain't no Dark Elf Trilogy it's a decent start to a new IP. God knows ive seen much worse as far as story goes.
So far from what ive seen in my marathon start of the game i'd give it a 7.5/8 on 10. It's no Baldur's Gate 2 to get a perfect 10 or a near perfect 9, and definitely not Dragon Age 2 mediocrity to deserve a 4 or a 5.
I assume it's because they gave it a 6 and nothing deserves higher?
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
For some reason, the idea is that if you don't like a game or only give it a fair to middling review, you're somehow being more honest or fair than someone who gives the game a good or really good review.
** edit **
For instance, I would give the game a 0 because there's a bug in the demo that prevents the screen from displaying anything other than the mini map unless you know the specific visual setting to change. For anyone who doesn't experience that bug, the game would be better than a 0. Who is being more honest? Me or the people who don't experience that bug?
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Its fun playing but its ABSOLUTELY not Skyrim both games are so different and graphics Amalur is cartoonish and rather OUTDATED not very well done.
Hack and slash with simple UI and medeocre rpg elements.
I give KoA a 7.5/10 for fun gameplay but its not realy original or innovative other wise it would be more becouse fun gameplay is most importend for a game.

I have to admit this is a game I debated whether to get or put off buying until it was more around the twenty nine dollar range. I ended up buying a couple other games instead, "The Legend of Grimrock" (a throwback dungeon crawler, think "Eye of the Beholder") and Gothic 2 ffrom gog.com. (Which I had never played) I am enjoying both.
Still; I do think I am going to to buy this game, inspite some of the negitive things I have heard about it. It does look fun and I am a fan of Salvatore.
Please keep fable out of this discussion, I played Fable 3 and really didnt understand it at all to put it nicely.
I really liked the chemistry in this game world and the structure of it, the art style was cool as well. I have to say though, the camera was not to my liking in any way if I was to be a nit picker.
I think Dragons Dogma looks way better in my opinion, but that isnt coming out for the PC those basterds so that takes me off its list.
50 hours of entertainment for $60 is extremely good this day and age, but, that's my opinion I guess.
Salvatore is just a name on the box. If Salvatore did anything in this game, it was phoned in while he was in a drunken stupor. The only thing he appears to have done ANY work on is the lore OUTSIDE the game. Ingame, the story appears to have been written by a 12 year old dyslexic on a sugar rush.
Same with McFarlane, just a name on the box. Unless copy/pasting World of Warcraft is McFarlane's art style now.
Only the easily amused would find 50 hours worth of "entertainment" in this game. Just my opinion.
