Those are mainly the big *one time* purchases as well, rather than a recurring fee such as a WoW sub. So, playing WoW for 2 years (as many seem to have from their sub numbers) would cost, what around 600? (Scandelous sensationalist voice: 'That could end up costing you more than you think...Oooohhh').
The in game trading post also has an up to date exchange rate, so considering you actually could just buy those gems with in game gold and never actually spend any money, you could also wait until the exchange rate is in a good place.
I'll personally be spending money in their shop anyway at first, my wife and I can easily justify spending £20-30 each per month if there's something we want, and we've spent a lot more on recent games that were steaming piles of clone that never improved much post launch. I'm more than happy to support this game, which is already in amazing shapre prior to its official launch.
I'm sure people on a limited budget can manage to have fun in this game without spending any money, but I'm also confident many resourceful people will do quite well for themselves converting gold to gems.
All this did was make me realise what a good deal this GW2 is in the long run.
I want to clarify how vault space works for crafting materials. (Sorry, I thought I had taken a screen shot, but I don't).
Your vault space has a tab for collectables.
This tab inludes individualized slots for every basic and rare crafting material in the game, with an item icon identifying them and a counter to show how many of each you have. You just go to this slot, drag the crafting mats, (or just mail them to your bank by right clicking them in your inventory from any where in the game) and they go into the proper slot. (There are also special slots for the collectable miniature vanity pets, so those will not eat up inventory/vault space either).
I'm not sure what the limit is per mat, but I had some stacks of over 100, so it's >100.
These are also shared by your entire account, so you can gather and salvage mats in the field with any of your characters, easilty send them to your vault for storage and have them accessible to any of your characters that need them for crafting.
There is no gathering skill you need to learn, but there are consumable tools you buy and stick in slots on your character sheet to be able to gather. All gear can also be salvaged with a salvage kit, which you can buy in stacks of 25 pretty cheaply, and there are also salvageable items, which can be stacked and also can be broken down into crafting mats viab the use of a salvage kit.
When trying to figure out your potential inventory needs in GW2, this is a very big consideration. Crafting mats need not take up any general vault space and only require a few seconds of inventory maintenance to send from your bags to your vault, or even to be sold right from the field via the Marketplace.
Edit:
Here is a WBE youtube video showing the Account bank and illustrating how each crafting mat and mini-pet has their own slots...
Thanks for nice sum up of additional possible costs.
OFC Anet dont make game for charity, but for profit. But this model is better in many way for customers then subscription model. You can make a pause from game and come back later without feeling bad for paying subscription while not playing.
Also if you have extra RL cash, you can unlock all you desire, while people withour will still be able to play 5 characters (instead 8), or have to junk more often, without extra costs.
(or just mail them to your bank by right clicking them in your inventory from any where in the game) and they go into the proper slot. I'm not sure what the limit is per mat, but I had some stacks of over 100, so it's >100.
I saw the collectibles tab but didn't know you could mail them directly. Very interesting and very useful. In the starter area before level 15 I was able to craft two 8 slot bags. Once I migrated to the 15 - 25 zone I found a herd of Warthog (outside one of the Charr cities in that area) and decided to 'skill up' my alternate weapons. Took less than an hour to have all the skills unlocked and get enough mats for about 2 more bags.
I DID run out of inventory space a couple of time but knowing about the 'mail to bank' option would alleviate that easily enough. The only minor grumble I found was that some mats have the same name and a different 'sell' value and wouldn't stack. So a single 'tattered hide for 9 copper took up an inventory slot while the stack of 'tattered hides' selling for 10 copper was really what I needed to be carrying/monitoring.
I like extra bags and would consider them on my main. It's unlikely I will ever have time for more than a main and an alt (other than for muling) so there wouldn't be a great deal of $$ involved.
Welcome to Guild Wars 2, new player! We’re the fun new game where you don’t pay a monthly fee to play! But you do realize of course that we need money to keep up our servers and update the game, so there are a few modest cash store items to help cover our costs. But it’s probably nothing that you actually need, so don’t pay any attention to it!
How do you like the classes? They’re all great fun, aren’t they? We bet you’d like to play them all! But not so fast, you only have five character slots. If you want the other three, you’ll just need to make a one-time payment in the cash shop to unlock them. It’s only 800 gems per slot, so for only 2400 gems you’ll be on your way!
What’s that, adventurer? Your bags are full? Why shucks, have we got a deal for you! You have seven bag slots, but we locked three of them so you’d have room to grow! For an insignificant 400 gems, you can unlock one bag slot on one character. Of course, if you have eight characters, that’s twenty-four slots, but hey, what’s a little 9600 gems between friends for the luxury of being able to carry things?
Oh, you wanted to actually be able to store things? Like, in a bank? Well other MMOGs make you spend nasty gold to have more than 30 bank slots, but not us! You can just buy them with gems! We’ve helped you out by making the sky the limit and locked a whopping seven bank expansions at 600 gems each, so you can feel extra accomplished when you pull out your credit card to pay for the 4200 gems for that.
tl;dr:
At the current listed rates, you have to pay 16,200 gems to have eight characters with unlocked inventory and bank slots in GW2. With the assumption that the conversion rate is $1=100 gems, that’s $162 dollars above and beyond the box cost of the game. Edit: The actual gem price is believed to be $5=400 gems, which makes the cost $202.50 for those 16200 gems. A year’s subscription to WoW is $156 if purchased in six-month blocks, making it ironically cheaper to play a year of WoW than a year of GW2.
But the next year you will still have to pay WoW another $152 for the year, but I won't have to buy the bags again, since GW2 will still be sub free.
Bear in mind that I’m ignoring vanity items, convenience items, and keys in this tally. Those are all entirely optional, and a player can take or leave those without any particular penalty. I’m focusing entirely on the one universal constant of any MMOG: storage. It’s the thing that is indisputably vital for every player, that nobody can afford to be without, and everybody absolutely requires. Anyone who doesn’t purchase bag and bank space is going to be regretting it, deeply and often. I don’t consider it optional, and doubt that anyone with any length of experience in online games would disagree with me on that.
There needs to be an alternative option to gems for purchasing in-game storage. There’s no telling what the gold value of gems will be after the game’s release, but if the beta weekend’s average around 20 silver per gem holds true, it will cost 120 gold per bank expansion and 80 gold per bag slot, which are fairly ridiculous amounts. Edit: My numbers for the silver price for gems was incorrect, see below.
Alternatively, making the bag slots an account-wide purchase rather than a per-character purchase would save the eight-character player 8400 gems, making the grand total a much more reasonable sum.
Disclaimer:
All of this hinges on beta test gem prices for cash shop items, and involves an assumption on the cash price for gems. Either of those two things may change before release. My goal in bringing this to peoples’ attention is not to incite panicked nerd rage, but to make people aware of the potential cash cost in GW2’s gem store model of business, and the fact that it may be no less expensive than other games with monthly fees.
Well, a backpack and four bag slots mean little if you don't know how many slots you get per bag. Taken from what is now considered an industry standard *sigh* (WoW), the game started with a set amount of bag space that was increased with each expansion. And even that was not enough and people needed at least one mule (or some very dedicated crafters 2 or 3). So the real question is whether the bag space is constant or you can find bigger bags as you progress.
There is heaps of room in the bags. You would have to be a hoarder to run out of room.
Also the teleport and mail system may help with the bag issue, but I wonder how easy it is to teleport back and forth from the field to the nearest banker.
Its as easy as pushing the map button and clicking on where you want to go.
With my first MMO i had alts galore, but now with so many titles and so many ftp games, I dont need alt after alt in one game, just one or maybe two at the most in multiple games, for when I want something different. I'm keeping my DAoC sub, play Atlantica once in a while, EQ2, now GW2. thats plenty..prolly to many games really. So i wont mind paying a few bucks once in a while in either EQ2 or GW2.
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
The game can't cost more than I 'think' since I am in complete control of every dime I spend. Plus:
1. Nothing in the store is 'necessary'. Storage space can easily be cleared by selling often or holding less 'fluff' items.
2. Everything on the cash shop is actually free. Coin = Gems. Gems = cash shop items. This is the game's design. Spend some time playing and poof- you have all the storage space you need and your credit card collects spider webs.
i have no problem buying stuff in the cash shop if they continue to make this game awesome..the amount of work they must have put into this game, they deserve success.
I do agree they promised not to sell anything that players would need, But I consider inventory space and bank space a must have.
No matter what anyone says people with more inventory space will have easier time to make in game money. Not sure if any one fiddeld around with crafting, it need a lot of items so people with space can craft more = sell more = more gold. which i find to be unfair.
personally i dont care about char slots as i my self will not replay the game 8 times, but 5 is enough to experience the story of each race.
All in all people need to show to Anet that inventory space is a must have not a cash shop item.

Maybe that's why you get so much free inventory space to begin with? Also, people seem to forget that cash shop items can be purchased with in-game coin (by buying gems). No real money is needed. If bank slots are the ONLY cash shop item somebody wants, I see no reason why they can't just save their coin and get some.

fiontar summed it up best. Read his post concerning slots. Posted by fiontar
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Buying gems with in-game gold makes every argument about "hidden costs" a non-issue. There is no come back for "I'll just pay with in-game gold" just like there's no come back for "I'll just buy a plex card since I don't have money".
From my experience the only ones I even see needing extra inventory & bank space are cooks and gear collectors. Especially cooks. Everyone else can make do with what's given and even if you're a cook, you'd only need one of your alts to actually be a cook and mail all the food to other chars. So yeah... just more arguements against the cash shop based on assumptions.
Apparently from what I've read bank space is shared across your accounts.
So rolling an alt would not work.
For bank space anyways. You would have extra inventory space I suppose.
But if it is shared account wide, you wouldn't need to buy it 8 times for each character but instead only once per account. I couldn't tell but did you include that factor in your calculations? Also, don't most of the f2p games or at least the weastern ones have bag space unlocked per account rather than per character? Maybe I'm off on that one.
Ok so I play for three more months...suddenly GW2 is cheaper, and for every other month, the game is cheaper and cheaper
Ofcourse I dont have to buy any of this stuff with real money, I can spend ingame money...Can YOU spend gold in wow for monthly sub? No you cant, what shame
You lost your own game -- > fail
Well, someone has to pay for it with real money, someone has to buy the gems. And if only a few buy the gems to sell for gold, since everyone seems to think gold isn't that important, then there won't be anyone to buy gems from, so you'll be stuck with buying them from the cs yourself.
They have to pay for thier servers somehow, how about just paying some money for making a good game ?
I donated 50 bucks to GGG for Path of exile, because they made a good game not because i wanted anything, i was already in beta.
It's time to man up and pay for the hobby you love, if you don't support these artistic creations there won't be any left. You will have COD 78 rehashed generic game instead.
Hell don't pay for extras !! you can still play a good game.
This may be how it is going to be with all games from now on. Game corporations are raising game purchase prices, moving to end used game use, and exploring new costs to add on to play their games. Just like banks and every other corporate business. Some of it is reasonable considering the bad economy. Some of it is nothing but greed and exploitatiion. I can understand how it may be difficult to run a big, ftp game, yet maintain the quality of services gamers demand in the current economy. But it needs to be kept reasonable. And corporate profit share reviewers don't care about reason. If gas prices get so high that people quit buying gas, the prices come down to the highest level possible where consumers will still buy gas. The same is true with games. When everyone started closing their accounts at a national bank with unreasonable fees, they first defended the fees, then removed them. It isn't about all or nothing, it is about reasonable. A reasonable game store may be a necessary evil these days.

The best part about this thread, to me, is the fact that it use to seem like I was in the minority in supporting cash shops on these forums. But now that Guild Wars 2 has come out, I have been thrust into a majority. Thank you GW2 for making so many people jump ship and see the light. I bet that writer that does the f2p article every week or so is doing cartwheels now about how accepted cash shops have become. And they aren't being begrudgingly accepted, they are being actively defended and looked forward to. This is a first and an interesting turn of events in the mmo space.

1. You can play the whole game without using the cash shop at all.
2. Many players have no problem with giving ArenaNet some money from time to time for running a great game.
3. You have full control of how much you want to buy when. This is much better than:
paying a monthly fee
having to buy content upgrades regularily, if you want to continue with the game
having to buy armor, because it is much better than what you get ingame
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.

YOU DONT NEED GEMS, NEITHER DOES IT INCREASE YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO BOTH PVE AND PVP
so..why care...

oh dear
People are complaining about not having enough character slots for every single class now by default?
What's up? did the game blow people away so much that gameplay arguments are null and void?
You DO realise you can buy gems with gold right?
Including the expansions they release probably 1-2 times a year GW2 is far from a F2P.
In comparison you get a lifetime subscription in TSW for 200$'s and people have been saying that it's a cash grab.
But as we know everything is acceptable when it comes to Anet and their F2Pish cash shop.
This is not a game.
