Pre-download Diablo 3 now

NetspookNetspook Member UncommonPosts: 1,583

For those who don't know:

Pre-download is available, at least here in Europe. Not sure if it's available for all who pre-order or if it's Annual Pass only. To download, simply log into your account and select Diablo 3.

Size of EU English client installer: 7.6 GB.

Edit: darn typo in the title (didn't do that one in the post). Thanks for pointing it out, Banisco ;P

Kinda sucks for you guys that're downloading it honestly. You won't be able to install until the servers go live, where as the people who buy a physical copy can install the game prior to the servers being up.

Thus... you won't be the first on the servers. :(

I'll give those extra few minutes so I don't have to deal with going to a store at Midnight.

But I'm in my mid 30's, and stuff like that just doesn't appeal to me... nor waking up my 20 month old.

I'll be surprised if they dont enable installation before the servers go live.

And im a little confused, you think youll have the game installed before its released?

I think ive had it downloaded for almost two weeks now.

I wont because im PST, but people on the east coast who have to wait until 3am local time for the servers to go live will have it installed before the servers are up and be able to play right away (if they purchase a retail copy). Where as the people who digitally purchased a copy have to wait until 3am before the installation file will be able to install the game.

    Download vs installation is different.

This has actually all been stated on the official forums for awhile now.

I'm gonna buy a box IRL later in the day on May 15h. Should I pre-download?
  • Germaximus_SGermaximus_S Member UncommonPosts: 1,061

I know the difference between downloading and installing, i was just discussing the topic.

How about a link to the official word on not being able to install before the servers go live?

So you want to play Diablo 3 and you are predownloading Diable 3, thats weird...

Typos apart i dont see the point of this hurry, is the game closing any soon? if not just relax and play whenever you can, its not a race.

Can't find the exact link to the thread again, but here's the question from a player and Bashiok answering:

maybe it’s to early but is there any news when we’ll be able to decrypt the downloaded files (pre-order) and wait with ready instal –myzyptlik

The digital pre-order will unlock at your region’s midnight launch time. Unlock, install, download day one patch, play. –Bashiok

    http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/comments/more-details-on-launch-day-times-yet-questions-remain#more-17940

That link is to the D3 fansite that puts up all Blizzard official responses. On that same page they list each regions "midnight release". For the "America" servers, it's 12am PST. So EST must wait until 3am.

Well, I'm not buying a physical copy, since I already got the game from the AP deal. So for me, it's digital download anyway.

Being first on the servers is nowhere near a goal for me. It's just nice to save some time on relase day by having the install files ready.

They won't enable installation till live cus all the movies, story etc would be data mined and up YouTube before you know it.

Meh diablo 3 is a waste of money, get torchlight 2 or wait for path of exile, they are what diablo 3 should have been, especally path of exile. Diablo 3 is so pointless, you have no char customization what so ever really, everything is handed to you skill and stat wise. If i had to rate it, based on older diablo games, I'd say it would roughly be diablo 0.5 other than graphics. Since the bar is so low that the game isin't even as deep as diablo 1. Its a real shame after how long d3 has been in devolpment that this piece of shit is what we get. It is defentally not worth the box price.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

Wow really?  Do you feel better now?

I am hoping the day before they allow the patch/install stuff.  Shouldn't be too much spoiled in that short time, but some data miners are beasts and the internet travels rapidly.

I've run into a ton of problems just getting their downloader to just download the files.  Just look at their support forums for issues with the predownloads for many people.  Eventually they downloaded, after some attempts overwrote the previously downloaded files.  It wasted 23gig of my internet cap before it downloaded properly.

Right now I'd say it's 50/50 whether or not the predownload even installs properly for me on the 15th as it still refuses to pop up an install button that it's supposed to.  Most people can click install and get a message that says "The fire from the sky still falls D3 can't launch".

I'm very disappointed in their untested downloader and agent.  I've never seen anything like this.  All they needed was a torrent to download the files and there'd be no issue.

Waiting until 3AM for the EST is also lame as hell.

Keep that stuff out of this thread about predownloading D3.

Yeah. I pre-downloaded it several weeks ago. I think it was available for pre-download here in the states as soon as they announced the 5/15 release date.

There are always a few unlucky people with any kind of software.

See, I myself have never had any issues with any Blizzard downloader stuff, be it WoW, SC2 or now D3. It's really uncalled for to immediately assume they haven't tested their stuff. If anything, you should look at your own system.

But yeah, I'm sort of weirded out about not being able to install. I should be able to do that, but not be able to start the game up. Atleast that way I know for sure the download isn't corrupted for some reason. Oh well.

Got some problems myself, the dowloader just stopped at around 90% or so. But I tried starting the setup anyway, and a windows popped, saying "updating install files" or somthing like that. What actually happened, was that it simply downloaded the rest of the install files.

After it was done, I tried running the setup again, and got the message:

"The fire from the sky still falls. Diablo III has not yet launched."

So my message tells why it can't launch, not just simply that it can't.

Yeah. I can only think that Blizzard is worried that somehow somebody will crack the game or something and be able to play (at least the single player portion) early. I'm not sure if that's even a possibility with needing an internet connection but Blizzard is probably at least covering all their bases with not allowing you in install it.

Unable to install pre-relase isn't something new. I pre-ordered Skyrim, and it arrived the day before release. When trying to install it, I got this message:

"The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim cannot be installed yet, because it is not yet released."

That's not a problem, that's working as expected.  It's just that in my case I can't get to that point in the D3 download and they have no reporter built in to help debug the issue.

EDIT: Setting the compatability mode to windows XP for setup finally fixed it.  I remember something similar happening for the beta.

There are a lot of issues mainly for people with Win 7 64 bit.  The new agent for D3 and MoP often needs to be killed and certain directories deleted.  The downloader also has a habit of sometimes deleting files that were downloaded and starting over.  That's something that should never happen.
