The only way anyone is going to take you seriously is if you have a 4 year degree in Computer Science. The industry won't even consider anyone with one of these Game Designer quickie degrees.

So you're going to take the word of a bunch of forum goers to decide how you're going to spend some $120K for your degree, probably closer to half a million with interest.
Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

The game industry likes self taught people more then college grads. Self-taught people tend to focus better. However, the level of concentration needed to be a self-taught programmer is pretty high. Going to a trade school in computer science is a good foundation. I would avoid state universities for computer science since they are a bit dated.
To be a game designer you can't get that title by going to school. Simply you have to make games, and at the beginning this means on your own. Make some mods and games for mobile platforms. Get your feet wet with the tools. Having a foundation in computer science helps with this.
Want to do advanced game engine designs that use complicated scenegraphs? You cant not tale advanced algorithms and data structure classes.
Want to use API and just build upon that or script? Forget comp sci and maths. All you need to know is that api and youre good. At most you need programming 1 or 2.

Option a- buy ready made kits and not know how to explain it in math.// use map editors and item editors
Option b- buy ready made kits and know a bit of how to explain it in maths // use unrealscript/ hero engine script etc
Option c - make your own kits and know how to explain it a bit in math // use of a game api
Option d - make your own kits and know how to explain it in math with high precision // make your own engines and shaders
Option d needs a degree or equivalent knowledge and you need to know what to make
Option c needs programming 2 an under this.
Option b needs programming 1 and under this.
Option a needs you to know what you wanna make.

Good. Most of the time when people come on here talking about 'Game Designer' degrees they are referring to one of those tech school 6 month to a year degrees. Sorry, I assumed you were talking about the same. As long as it's an actual 4 year college level course you should be fine. You just don't want one of those quickie Game Designer degrees they advertise on late night TV.
