I spent 3 years in the Australian Army, I would recomend military service to anyone. My sister, 2 brothers in law, father in law and sister in law as well as my grandfather all served. It will be the best experience you can ever have and it will change your outlook on life.

Whether you intend to be a career soldier or not, a few years will be an experience you will always regard as a positive in your life.

Well yeah it can be positive. Unless your friggin DIE! We are at war...might want to keep that in mind.

I served shortly in the Army back in '93. Till both my knees blew out. Then they sent me home. Anyways, if you are truly interested, take their aptitude test, I think its called the ASVAB, and see how you score and what possible MOS (Mode of Service, aka Job) they offer you. And dont be afraid to haggle and fight for a good contract. Just like with anything else, its a deal. And you ARE signing some of your rights away when you become a soldier, and lose that citizen status. And they WILL pressure you once you get that ball rolling so be prepared for it. They tried for weeks to pressure me to take less than what I asked for, but in the end they caved and gave me everything. What a bitch, I ended up getting tore up....ah well...

    Uh...hope that helps some.

No, it's just what awaits him. Maybe he will commit some of it too.

Military service is an exercise in discipline and endurance. If you put time in high school ROTC you will be two steps ahead of recruits in basic (knowledge of drill and basic military science [officer vs enlisted.])
If you have the intellect you can get advanced specialty training that would cost $20k to $50k in the civilian world. If you acquire important skills promotion and benefits follow (8 to 12 yrs service.)
If you run off at the mouth, do not care about others or could care less if things get done right, the military is not for you.
There are more than five levels to the military beyond basic army grunt pfc service. Mainly dependent on mental/physical acuteness. (eg. special services, intelligence, admin, tech, officers.) In addition there is a difference between USMC, USN, USA and USAF. Considering the modern and future world, having multi-linguistic capabilities is a definate advantage.

if you do join remember no respawn points.

but yea it would be better in the long run, you get special benefits when you retire, if you get cought doin illegal stuff, you know what normal non-serving people will not get away with, you have a chance to get away with.

Do what your heart tells you to do. Dont let any person tell you what to do about your future....unless its your parents lol

    Also, for Pheonixs:

Post pics like that again and I can assure you that you will be perma banned from here.

Im betting everything I have that if another mod deleted those pics before I did, you would be gone. This is a family gaming oriented website....not an underground Faces of Death site. Dont post them again

Sorry about that. But you have to agree, that is what he get's if he joins the army. It was meant as a warning to him.

The army will treat you like crap, just to warn you. My sister is in afghanistan now, and has been to Iraq twice. She's in the air guard, volunteered. While she's staying in her own camper (recently promoted to staff seargent) the army guys of even higher ranks are staying in tents, with no per diem either!! with mortar fire hitting a base every single day, would you rather stay in a tent? ::::37::

Do some research on what it is like in the field. Not what the propaganda merchants would have you believe.

Here is a good start http://www.optruth.org/. Written by people in the field.

If you do go into the Army, just don't go in with the mentality of "getting dicipline, having a secure job after" and all that crap. In the ARMY you are signing away your civilian right to become a soldier that fights for your country. If you sign up be sure you are ready to die for your country.

    Serve the U.S. well.

EDIT: Oh yeah, all that job stuff and those comercials are a trick to get idiots to join thinking they won't have to kill and fight ect.

Not that I am calling anyone an idiot. I would join the Army myself if I wasn't such a lazy fat ass. Just, if you join, be ready for the fight of your life, physically and mentally.

Well, Im not one of those kids that just looked at the tv, ohh look, lets fly in helicopters :). I realize i would be putting my life on the line. I have no problem with that. The main problem I have is putting my life on the line for a country, and president i don't fully support. Though, I am looking for discpline, I am not looking for job security. At best im looking for college security once i get out of the army. I realize that those pictures were fairly.. err wrong? But, It happens, And those pictures don't really phase me, Though the actual thing most likely would, I'd be worried if it didn't. From what i heard from a few friends that are in the army. The biggest part is the psycologlical one, :). Thanks for all your advice, and i welcome more :)

Just keep this in mind that just because your time to serve is up, doesn't mean that you are free from the military. They can always pull a stop loss or even reactivate you if necessary.

Joining the US Army will do good if you need structure and have no other goals right now in life. Even if you have goals, it's still a good start.

Just make sure of one thing: Don't let them take away your ability to think for yourself.

Though, I have some semi goals, nothing to concret as of yet. And, I doubt anyone can take away my ability to think for myself. Or, So I think. :P. I haven't really been put in a situation in which could be considered someone trying to make me think their way :)

When someone does a good job at it, you don't even realize it happened. Suddenly you think a certain way and you never question how it happened.

  • RufiusRufius Member Posts: 2,031

Haha, army... just join the reserves. It's a do nothing job. ;)

Have you heard of the free game America's Army? If not goto americasarmy.com then download the game. Do what it tells you for basic training then go into a real mission. Now try to stay alive and complete your objective. When you die and your thinking where the hell did I get shot from? Just turn your computer off and walk over to the couch and sit down. Reflect on this. There is no restart button or waiting for the next round. I'm a decent player in this game and I usually take out 2 or 3 guys every round but I usually end up dead and can't figure out where the shot came from. My cousin and I both joined up around the same time in 93 he went Army I went Air Force. We both were deployed to Bosnia. Hell, does anyone even remember us being there? Anyways, he was staying in an abandoned coal mine at some camp. I was staying in a hotel complaining about not having a t.v. in my room. That should tell you the difference. So basically if you want to be in the middle of the "shit", lack of a better term there, join the Army or the Marines, if you don't want to see land for months at a time join the Navy, if none of those appeal to you join the Air Force. The worst place I ever had to be while I was in the Air Force was in a tent in the middle of the desert. Sounds bad but my tent was air conditioned. Now make your decision and best of luck no matter what you choose they are all honorable branches of the military.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

I am the furthest thing from being military type, so you can either take this with a grain of salt, or take it as scripture...

Are you willing to let go of your identity as you now know it?  Being in the army is not about being an "ARMY of one"...  I have seen many friends go into the military and come out completely different people...  For me, they are less likeable, and more prone to carry an attitude (I suppose if you are trained to kill another human being, this is a probable result)...  I have nothing against people in the military, hell, I admire them for doing something I was not put on this Earth to do...  But in every case, I have seen people stripped of their individuality coming out of the Army, are you ready to do this?  Some people drastically need their ID (identity) taken away, since it is destroying their lives to begin with, and need the restructuring that the military can grant...

We all know the military NEEDS YOU....  But do YOU NEED THE MILITARY?  If you are looking to join for the ROTC, money or anything else monetary in reward, you will have some long and hard thinking to do...  Is your ID worth it?  If you are going to get out of a bad life, change your ways or are looking to become a different person altogether, then by all means, YES!  But be verrrrrrrry careful, people in the Army treat each other like shit, if you are soft-skinned and do NOT want a Sgt. barking orders at you all day like you are an animal then do not do this...  If you are thick-skinned and can take constant verbal (and sometimes physical abuse), then you are more suited for it...  Make no mistake about it though, the military life is not a friendly one to live...  Just ask my neighbor...
