Was I the only one bothered with the amount of violence at E3?

I could care less about the violence in games.  But why do developers find it necessary to include as much violence as possible?

It seems more people want violence than people who don't.

Bothered?  Nah.  I play a lot of violent games, kind of used to.  However....there was a lot of violence at E3, regardless if you were bothered by it or not.  I read the RPS editorial (sorry if it's been linked, didn't read whole thread) about it and the author did kind of have a point, even if he was rambling a bit.

Violence grabs your attention.  And it sells!

Gameological society counted in the Microsoft and Sony press conference about 218 characters died total over the two conferences...   (About 1 and some zombies died in nintendo's)

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.

Didn't know it was such a big deal. Guess our society likes these kinds of games. Also which Nintendo game killed someone? I saw ZombiU where they killed the Zombies.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Video games, movies (G-XXX), music... are all emotional outlets of the subconsciously frustrated proletariat.  For some, complete media immersion makes working 50 years for a mediocre pension and a destroyed body for some corporate leech almost bearable.

Society has merely supplanted  one God (Biblical) for another (carnal satiety).

It's a problem with Western society as a whole - our media (movies and video games, at least) is obsessed with sex and violance to an unhealthy degree.

The former is due (in my opinion) mainly because of  focus on sexual repression derived from religious pressure. The latter, I'm not really sure where that comes from.

I read several US sites and im stunned, even sometimes shocked how silly US are handeling sex with showing naked even smallest parts of body(nipples)or sex its beyond rediculous manytimes lol. Not to mention the beeps in shows we in holland have NON.

Freedom of speech you don't have in US:P

In Germany its just the other way around. Sex is okay, violence no. We even have boobs in commercials for shower products in the daytime.

But then people would have to give up their careers to actually BE with their children that they "would do ANYTHING for." (...except give up careers and lifestyles and actually give them time and attention.)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Who cares about video game violence? Priorities.

It's not about video game violence, its about how society is more accepting of violence than sex.

It really depends on where you live in the US as well.  Those red states are a bit goofy but things are much more laid back on say the west coast.

edit: Ok, I wanted to add the Warren Spector interview, but I see there is already a thread about it.

Sorry about that, I tend to read threads by clicking "watch" in the side pannel often times before reading other threads.

I have heard from multiple sources that this year's e3 was really violent. As a fan of ultra-violence, I take this as good news. The average age of gamers is what? 35? I think it's high time for the industry to stop trying to hold our hands and treat us like preschoolers. Ultra violence? Bring it on!

Violence is more often a sign of immaturity rather than maturity. I would expect the average gamer to appreciate deeper and more complex gameplay as they age, rather than violence, instant gratification, and shaking body parts (which caters more to the teenage market).

Which studies show this? As far as I have seen, violence and maturity are neither inclusive nor exclusive of each other, but that is simply life experience.
