I think our eyes should be on EverQuest 3

tixylixtixylix Member UncommonPosts: 1,288

With SOE's new engine being used in Planetside 2 and how open and seamless that game is, this means there is no reason for EverQuest 3 to be as open as Planetside 2 is proving the engine can handle it. Planetside 2 really is making it seem like SOE gets what their players want, they've made a game for what Planetside  was all about. I was really scared it would be some browser based dumbed down heavily instanced MMOFPS where you have less people in battle than BF3, making it an non MMO. However they've done it, they've gone bigger... wayyyyy bigger and are catering towards the fans, while bringing in modern day elements.

They've messed around with basic physics gameplay in Everquest 2 but Planetside 2 is using Physx, so could this mean deeper gameplay? Smedley said it would be an reimagining and not a direct sequel which is great after the failure of the second game to draw in the EverQuest crowd. Smedley even said they would produce amazing environments never before seen in an MMO. I so hope this means the world would be mostly seamless like how WoW's was in Vanilla where the only loading screen was between the two conts and into instances.  Even the instances though in WoW were built into the world and took up real world space, so it made them feel real, rather than fake in most games as you get magically teleported there. We know the engine is doing seamless in Planetside 2 with 2000 players, I so hope they do it in EverQuest 3 because I hate loading screens! Even if it's the illusion of being seamless like in HL where it doesn't take you out of the game but it loads up the next sectionand pauses the game for a brief second.

In the early concept art..

It looks like you can just run through that giant door instead of clicking on it to load! I so hope this rings true of the final game because most concept art seen of a game with loading screens, you see a massive closed door there.

This would all be so amazing for open world PVP as well, Smedley already said it's a main focus and not just something tacked on. Dave said they might be using that new Cam software they demo'd at E3 for socialising so they finally get it that people don't want to solo the whole game like all MMOs have become now?

The last thing I hope they get right is the crafting, we haven't seen deep crafting in an MMO in years. SOE has a great history with deep crafting in SWG and EQ2 before they dumbed it down for both games. Maybe with the Physx engine they're using they can do something really amazing with it!

I cannot wait to see this game, after SWG I never thought I'd be saying the only two MMOs I'm looking forward to are both made by SOE lol.

Odds are it'll be a stale old rehash of every game that has ever preceded it.  I gave up basing my expectations of what ANY computer game would turn out like based on concept art 20 years ago.

I love EQ to death but unless EQ 3 uses nextgen gameplay mechanics (action based) then its doomed to fail. I'm not asking for a casual Hello Kitty experience here, the game should be as hardcore and punishing as the old EQ 1 but the holy trinity tank/heals/CC mechanics is dead now. You can no longer launch a game with that kind of gameplay and still be successfull.

i dont believe in mmorpgs having proper pvp anymore.

mmofps, different story,  would you play our song sam, just one more time?

err... planetside of corz, not sam :P

Call SOE all you want but for me they have had the best mmo's of all time, but they have destroyed them because of the whining masses. So unfortunatly I fear EQ3 will start off as a terrible solocentric game for 8 year olds.I really hope I am wrong because for me EQ2 is the best mmo of all time and there is absolutly nothing else made that i have played longer than 1 month.

EQ3 already been hinted at by SOE Smed that it's going to be a sandbox theme park mix. SOE built the forgelight engine to cater to open seamless worlds with good performance too in a MMO game. So there is no doubt EQ3 will be one big nice open world for players to live in this time, not just theme park. Forgelight is all about the open world.

Why not? I totally disagree with this. There is absolutly nothing wrong with having roles instead of no role zergfest bullcrap.Roles are the way to go!

Your opinion is certainly... your opinion but to date only a single unreleased MMO (GW2) is getting rid of the trinity. I would like to know what else your mystical crystal ball says, though.

They talked about this game the past 2 years at fanfair,  now this year they are having soe live changed the name. EQ3 (eqnext) is not on the agenda.  I asked about why and got a response that it is too early in development,  I replied back and never got an answer,  if it was 2 early in development then why is it not part of soe live this year but the last 2 years it was talked about.

So they are retooling the game and or changing the engine that they were going with.

Things we do know is it will be free to play to start out with, and rmt heavy.  Other than that we don't know anything yet.

If i remmeber right, they said they where trying to make a world, not  a game, or something like that. This is why i'm interested in EQ next. I'm sick and tired of these mmos being nothing more than combat centric games. A seamless landmass with deep crafting and housing and many other things.

I don't a sh** it there's holy trinity or not. I wouldn't even mind if it was normal mmo combat (i would prefer abit more action based of course). What i want out of this game is a deep, immersive virtual world to live" in. This, along with WOD, are my most desired ones, from what devs said about them (they canstil suck). But for now, keeping my eyes on realeses this year like TSW and next year like AA.

They've released so little information on EQ: Next that it makes you wonder what is going on behind the scenes. I'm hoping they do it well. EQ will always have a place in the hearts of a lot of mmo gamers.

He should speak for himself. A lot of people still like the trinity. Ask the ten million people that are still playing WoW. Also, not everyone is in to the actiony combat. A lot of us aging gamers don't have the reflexes for it.

I'm in two minds on action combat in an MMORPG because it has never been done well before and I don't even like combat in Guild Wars 2. Even in standard multiplayer games I cannot think of an action TPS that has great combat. Sure there are games with great shooting but they get old fast and aren't as good as their FPS counter part. Mount and Blade has good combat but it can feel so clucky half the time. Holy Trinity still exists in GW2 but they've made it worse, classes feel less unique and I just found them boring in an attempt to give everyone every type of skill to remove it.

WoW still has the best MMORPG combat IMO but the problems with the system is talent trees are a dated and useless mechanic that leave most people confused and offer very little in terms of customization. If you tooks WoW's combat and put in SWGs skillbox system then you'd have an amazing game. SWG still had classes (called professions) but you could mix each class to make 2.5 classes in one character. It works well and you could switch whenever you wanted and it's simple to understand compared to talent trees. If you want that class or to be able to use that weapon then you go up that skill box tree, unlike talent Trees where you have to pick percentage perks for each skills to optimise your character... just over complex but very little is viable.

Have you had the chance to play Tera? I loved wow. I think WoW reached the best healing combat several times over the years (early cata being my favorite), but I must say the combat in Tera makes all other mmos simply unplayable for me. Once you stop the tab, you never want to go back =p.

I just wish it ran better on my PC. >.<

Since SOE proved they could make a good game again in Planetside 2. I mean the public has even played it at E3 and everyone loved it so it's not like we've not seen or played it yet. SOE have a game coming that is what we wanted and not some dumbed down browser based game.

Now if they ruin Planetside 2 3 months after launch witrh a bad expansion then I'll lose faith again but they'ved finally proved themselves. Even with DCUO (even though it sucked) they proved they aren't shy about trying to innovate and even brought it to the consoles, when so many other developers say they will and it never happens.

$OE got out-douchebagged by ActiBlizz and whatever EA backs. Where have you been? Lesser of the evils, just like politics.

    No thanks

While I will be keeping my eye on it I don't have a lot of faith in SOE considering what they did with VG and EQ2 was a huge disappointment to me.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

until they start giving details -- I have no interest in SOEs EQ3 or Blizzards Titan

It would be nice to have a mmo with no load screens and a open seamless world for questing, especially a deep crafting system like PreCU SWG.

SOE is a jagged pill to me after they killed my, ahh MxO, SWG, Planetside, DC Universe Online and my EQ2 experience.

Like many posters have said, look at their track record, they aren't too successful at this point, only successful in making certain ones F2P.'

I haven't bought into the PS2 craze and definitely going to be skeptical on their next EQ game.

Ole Smedley eh? lol .. Get rid of this guy please!

Dear god no. Please keep that GW2 zerg fest spam crap away from EQ.   EQ does very well with the trinity, and I'm sure SoE aren't stupid enough to get rid of it. By the time EQ comes out, people will already be bored of GW2 and their so called "innovations".

    [mod edit].

EQ will forever be a special game to me but i doubt soe has the moxy to make eq3 a living legend, if you look at what they have done to eq and eq2 i think we can blindly see where 3 is going...

However planetside 2 has came into my sight and is blinding i am looking forward to ps2 and i would love to see $OE make a comeback and take its rightful place on the hill as the king of mmo games but i think thats a bigger fantasy than the whole EQ series..

Not to mention it appears they are going to make EQ3 for the laughable ps3 to make it a true scam...

    Playing GW2..

There is a number of people that are related professionally to SoE and as such post through nicknames information in both EQ2Flames and MMOfrindge, to name the 2 they are most active on. Usually, what hints they release end up to be quite the case. And word was once, only two versions for EQ Next made it to Smed's office..one was a multi million (50+) EQ 3 version, the other a <10 million farmville / social app version, facebook heavy. Second was approved.

Word has yet to change. Either offcially, or unofficially. I stick to that till someone proves them all wrong. And sticking to that means goodbye EQ NExt as far as i'm concerned. Until further notice.

Apparently they've decided that selling furniture is more profitable than producing another MMO.
