Actually this is to keep your account safe and no I would not be upset about them charging a whole $10 for added security. All MMO companies waste a great deal of time and money on customer support issues trying to resolve problems with hacked accounts so I don't have a problem with them offering an extra layer of security to thier customers for an extremely small fee.
"We can make your account more secure, but it will cost ya."
Seems wrong to me. Isn't it their responsibility to keep my account secure from hackers?
Blizzard could charge players to go to the bathroom and they would pay it and be happy for the privilege. Look at the success of their new single player online game, Diablo III. People lapped that up letting the game industry know this is a great way to do business.
This "pay for added security" just seems like a company not holding up their own end of the bargain. Maybe people could quit playing the game since they cannot keep their own accounts secure without charging people for that, but... well... that will never happen.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

Only on their end. They are only responsible for hackers cracking THEIR networks and taking your info but its not their job to keep hackers off YOUR system. Just like It is not your automakers job to keep your car safe from someone stealing it in your driveway.

This is kinda what I was hinting at.....Charging for something we should absolutely have as part of our gaming is not OK.....TOo many people felt that since Blizzard did it that made it OK but I didnt care what Blizzard did tbh......My point was that security is not something we should get charged for, it should be assumed that our info is safe.....You guys are seriously OK if every single company started charging extra for security measures??

That wasnt what you where hinting, it was the typical SOE bash.
If it really was about having to pay to keep YOUR acount safe from YOUR side you would have adressed the whole authenticator issue instead of starting off with a very suggestive tittle and message.
Did you start a thread about this when Bioware did this? Or Squaresoft? Or Blizzard?
Its not upto them to keep your computer clear from keyloggers, its not upto them to keep YOUR email box from getting hacked. Its yours.
If it is truly a additional "cost" to provide security then I think it should be charged upfront to EVERYONE and not just by choice. Everyone's account should be considered to be kept safe. By opting to NOT pay for it you are saying that YOU do not care about it. Secondly, you are giving them the out if your account is hacked. They should not be let off the hook. If they can not provide a secure account, then they should not be in business PERIOD. Either factor it into the cost of doing business and charge accordingly OR do it and eat the cost if that can be factored into the companies bottom line. Either way, it should not be a seperate charge nor be on a individual basis.

You do know acounts ussually dont get hacked by trying to hack their database right? They ussually get it from keylogging, hacking email boxes or people even giving their acount name AND pw to (fake) rep's. Which means effectively hackers .. stealing your acount use the acount name and pw YOU gave them directly or indirectly.
I have to ask you this.. is the bank responsible if that 100 bill gets picked out of your pockets in the street?
SOE will be introducing two (2) versions. A physical hardware authenticator that can be purchased and shipped directly from SOE and a mobile authenticator that can be used via your Smartphone device. The physical hardware authenticator is unique to your account, can be carried around with you and does not require a Smartphone device.
The mobile SOE Authenticator will be available in the near future. SOE plans to support select Smartphone devices including iPhone and Android powered devices. The mobile SOE Authenticator will provide the same level of protection as the physical SOE Authenticator. SOE will offer this version FREE to all Station Account customers as soon as it is ready!

Blizzard did this and you keep silent...
And if SOE does the exact same thing you plan to start a ruckus?

Blizzard sells theirs at a loss, SOE probably does aswell.

Give it a rest Theocritus.
Security does cost money. So why is this classic towards SOE OP?
Isn't this common in all sorts of industries?

i bought WoWs authenticator for $6 or $7 (cant remember) from the battlenet store. 6 - 7 +s&h is much better than 10+s&h
I think SOE should (if havent done it) also release a free version for celphones like Blizz, Trion, Swtor did already.
