As far as I know, it's digital download only. Not sure if collector's editions pack an installation disk, but I remember reading that the normal editions won't have one. That said, if you can get your hands on the client file, you can download the game even if you haven't bought it. So you can leave it on download overnight for a few days, or however long it takes with your connection - the total size of the game is currently around 16 Gb.
i did not realize this was just a box with a code! interesting.
never would have impacted me as i prefer to just download everything. especially since if you order it now you have 20 days to download it before you can even play it! (and closer to 60 days to download if you aren't worried about the beta)
The problem is, by the time the buyer gets the dvd on their hands, a good portion of the content is already outdated, requiring another multi-gig download. My suggestion - get your hands on the client file, and download overnight for as many nights as it takes. You can close the download window without losing progress, it'll look like it starts from 0% again next time, but all the previously downloaded info is still there.
WTH kind of connection do you have? My game file is currently about 16 GB. Unless you are still using Dial-up, it shouldn't take you that long to DL something of this size. And if you are still using dialup, you are going to have a lag fest anyways.
Edit: did a little maths:
If you have a 1meg connection, it should take around 36hrs to DL. (assuming ussing full bandwidth)
If I were you, I would take a laptop down to starbuck, connect on wifi, and DL there. Then move the game files over to your gaming pc.
That's a viable alternative. Download the game at a place with a high speed internet if you have access to one, then copy GW2.dat to your gaming computer.
Will their release client stream? Now that EQ2 and WoW use them, I am addicted to them. I know that streaming clients have some issues, but it is awesome to play a game while it downloads.

i noticed Rift does this now as well.
GW1 had it, so i assume GW2 will some day if not right away!
Remember though, that 16 gigs is just whet we have so far on the beta's. It wouldn't surprise me if this turned out to be quite a lot larger than that. Luckily, if you can get hold of a copy you can install it and start updating right away, no need to wait till the next BWE or release.

I could be wrong, but I thought I recalled a dev post somewhere that said the current client had all the assets, and that zone restrictions are handled server side.

I think GW2 client does already stream, same as GW1. During beta weekend events they streamed patches so that you only had to re-open the client to continue playing. If you add -image to the shortcut target path, the client will download everything there is to download when you use the shortcut (will not launch the game though). And the other great tech they brought from GW1 - no server downtime for updates. No downtime for scheduled maintenance. Restart the client, and that's it.

Could have been something else though.
I didn't see that. Well, that is a surprise given the detail in the game. I suppose having it all in one humongous file does save quite a bit of disk space. Anyway, we'll find out soon...well soonish...

A few days? What year do you live in, 1999?
Yeah but are they selling a box with just a code? I don't see DVD on the box.
I'm not on a T-1 line
Yes, the box only has a cardboard card in it with the activation code.
It may be shocking for you to hear but not everyone has amazing internet speed...

LOL cmon give us a DVD costs like .30 cents

WIth a MMO you kinda except a DVD though 16 gigs is alot

Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.

I completely disagree. Almost everything is digital distribution now. The last game I bought with a disc, Skyrim, needed 8GB of updates anyways.
As to the actual size of games, here are some numbers for you:
LotRO: 14.4GB
TSW: 30GB
EQ2: 23GB
WoW:25GB
SWTOR: 27GB
Looking at that, GW2 is actually on the Small end for an MMO.
GW2 is set to require 25GB

Hmm, Fair enough.
My point still stands though. It is hardly large for a quality MMO. Now if you compare it to *Random Asian port* I'm sure it would look large.
Edit: Now that I think about it more, I might be thinking of how content is handled in LotRO. I think I need to go to bed.
Who say its download only? I never read it.
When you pre-order a game you might gain pre-access. Thats the reason for the code, just like swtor did.
I would be very surprise if its only download.
Pretty sure it wont.
Now that I re-read some of the stuff on Gamestop, it looks like you can buy a hard copy. You just cant get the disc until the actuall launch date.
