Broadband is a minimum requirement. This is where there is a certain user responsibility to acknowledge that sometimes you just can't have it your way.
you can buy a disk but I'd honestly not bother, I'd imagine there is a solution in your area op.
i do not know if OP was trolling or not but if you know some friends(if they live not far from where you live) with better connections go see them for a week end for example with your comp and dowload the patches then go back and play
i think its the only solution for now with "your download speed"
Not to sidetrack the convo, but one fallacy I wanted to point out.
Some countries insist on running fiber optic lines at whatever cost to every neighborhood in their nation, often at taxpayer cost. Unfortunately, the US is not one of them.
The way fiber gets to an area is that a provider (cable, DSL, FiOS, whatnot) run a cost assessment first. they look at the number of people in the area, determine how many would want their services, and how much money they would probably make in X number of years. If that amount is lower than the still-substantial cost of running fiber to the area, they will not do so.
This has become less of a problem in recent years, but there are areas that BB providers do not think are profitable enough and will not lay fiber to still.
FYI to the OP, just in case he is being honest after all that. satellite is a crappy option, but it's far better than dialup and DOES work anywhere in the country more or less. Look into it.
Why some people lie in this thread and suggest that there are digital only? 0_o
Other thing is OP that GW2 WILL be patched anbd patches WILL be big.
So even if you install it from DVD you will will have to download big patches and via dial-up it will take days or weeks.
So I would try to get some broadband interenet, explore all options avabile - becasue on dial-up I cannot see you patching game to be honest.
Indeed, i don't get why everyone keeps saying there won't be physical versions of the game (as in game box+ discs+manual and all that stuff). The thing is though, if you want a physical version like this, you'll have to buy it from a store at launch day (august 28th) or later, and you won't be able to get the pre-purchase bonus.
So basically, if you pre-purchased the game, it'll be digital only (except if certain stores offer a physical pre-purchase aswell).
But if you want a physical edition, including the discs to install the game with, you'll have to buy it in a store once the game is launched.
You asked why things keep going digital? It is really very simple.
The same reason games don't still ship on SSSD 5-1/4 floppies? Same reason Hayes 2400 Smartmodems don't cut it any more?
We've heard this tale of woe with every new technology development since.
Games haven't shipped a new cheap physical media since CD's, really. Are we about due for cheapass USB drives soon?
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I'm on dial up (I live in middle of the desert, a bit outside san diego, and I'm either stuck with satellite internet or dial-up) with bandwidth limitation. Beta weekend install estimated Guild Wars 2 would take 1 month and 2 weeks to download. That doesn't even count patching it. I really hoped for a disk to install it, but I heard it is download only. Even at release.
I really want to play GW2, but why does everything keep going digital? What happened to going to a store and buying it in an awesome looking box and dvds? The only games left like that are console games.
A big shame too, since GW2 is shaping up to be a great MMO and it looks awesome. But why no love for people with weaker internet Why do I have to download spyware (steam) or some other spyware download manager? I want a box, and I want a dvd to come with it!
Anyone else agree? Anyone else in the same predicement?
spyware ( steam ) ? heh there we go...
also if you are fan of online games dial up is not for it. i suggest moving.
I bought a new PC for GW2 this morning. Not the "best", but it should run GW2 really well. Mine can barely play WoW as it is, so it should be a big improvement.

Now you just need an internet connection that meets the minimum system requirements and you are good to go!

For those that know internet connection. How well would satellite internet do? I don't know much about satellite internet. A big improvement over Dial-up? I would buy it for general internet use, not just for Guild Wars. My internet is rather slow as it is...

Problem with satellite connection is the large amounts of lag - not really lag but you have to send the data up and down from the satellites and that equates to long ping times - 500-900 ms (sometimes even longer) rather than 10-100. it is fast but the delay in information kills it.
Well, outside some trolls that appeared out of the wood work.

Ah, yeah that is a rather high ping. Guess I have to live with it then. Thanks for the information.

VG was played on the lowest settings and it was still laggy, hence why...outside of trying it every now and then...I don't play it.
And there are ini tweaks to skyrim, to make it look like vanilla oblivion (or even worse, since I can set ugrids to 3, which is a big one) and oblivion runs fine on my machine. Even with mods, I don't notice any fps problem. As long as I don't have any graphical mods.
The lag I think is more for online games, since I believe they require a better PC than just a singleplayer game. WoW lagged at times, especially in dungeons and raids. But, that might partly be my internet connection. But upgrading my PC should help still.

In GW2 there is generally always a bunch of other players around and with a 56k you will likely lag up and often become froze making it unplayable for you, i live way out in the boonies and we didnt get broadband until 2007 so i share your pain with online gaming with a 56k modem..
GW1 was the best running game i ever played online with a 56k it was very playable but GW2 is a different beast..
Best thing you can do is get hughesnet or some other satellite broadband for decent speed downloading games and patches but i can tell we always used a 56k to play with a 250ish ping because sat broadband had a 2000-10000 delay...

Ah, well I live in a mediumish size community (mostly older folk)...but younger people that can't afford the city (it is crazy expensive), are starting to move out here. Maybe in time, we'll get better internet.
I never did play GW 1, but sounds like it is a very different game than GW2. But, didn't ArenaNet say they wanted GW2 to be accessible to a lot of people? If I avoid PvP, PvE may be good. Or I hope anyway. Becoming frozen and rubberbanding is quite annoying, however.
Well, if anything else...I have a friend that has cable, and I can always play GW2 at his place. Just bring my desktop over and play.
Indeed, i don't get why everyone keeps saying there won't be physical versions of the game (as in game box+ discs+manual and all that stuff). My understanding is, you are wrong...
If you pre-purchase the game from gamestop, for example, you get a pre-purchase code(same as the retail code now), but when the game releases you can come in-store to pick up your retail box.
Most of the gamestops are printing the pre-purchase code onto your bill and not even giving you a box, because you get your box when the retail boxes lauch.
If you pre-purchase from arenanet's website, you only get a digital download.
Or, there was a factual error about GW2 in there and I removed it. And since the thread was old, I never bothered to edit it until it was brought up again...I thought it was going to be a heavy cash shop, pay to win game (from what I heard), so I removed the parts about the cash shop and left everything else. You would have said I was trolling if I left it in, or if I took it out.
As for Skyrim...why would I take screenshots of something that looks as bad/a bit worse than oblivion? I up the graphic sliders, so the screenshots look better. And most of my screenshots are in interiors, since they are much less graphically intense.
so... you want an disk which contains 13gb of stuff... then after bwe 1 you would need to redownload 5 gb of changes.. then after bwe2 another 10gb of changes and so on.. and at release you can buy an disk..but every update/expansion ull probably have to download another 10gb each
listen... even if you had a disk, with ur internet you would be F''d anyway

Dial up only? Sorry to hear that. Satellite is not an option as others have stated. [mod edit]
There are very fast satellite internet options available now like Wildblue and others. They won't cost you and arm and leg either.
Broadband is a minimum requirement. This is where there is a certain user responsibility to acknowledge that sometimes you just can't have it your way.

Caught hand in bag ? hahahaha
Theres no way a Dial Up can DL the GW2 Client....
lets say GW2 takes 20gb.(i dont recall the exact number) and let's say his Dial up Downloads at 10kb/sec.
GW2 is 20 971 520 kb wich means it would take him 582 hrs (24days) just to Download the Main body of the game x)
