The game is well worth the monthly sub..

I have not had this much fun in a themepark MMORPG since i first picked up Everquest..

Well, in any MMO its only worth paying a sub if there's content you still wish to complete/enjoy.

If the answer after the free month is no, then time to unsub, otherwise keeping paying until it's no longer worth it for you. (doesn't matter what other's think)

I started TSW on Saturday, having some fun, hasn't totally grabbed me (not really much of an adventure game sort of player) but so far I'm still giving it a go. ( I do love killing zombies regardless)

Disclaimer: This is my own personal opinion.  I do not speak for anyone but myself.

I started playing The Secret World on Saturday.  I had been watching this game for a while, lurking and reading the forums here.  I know how polarized the MMORPG.com forumites can be.  But when I saw nothing but good reviews and positive thoughts about the game (mind you there were some negative sprinkled in, but those were few and far between), I decided to give it a go.

I tried the game.  And here are my thoughts/opinions:

    1) The game is not swords and sorcery.  There are no sparkle ponies, disco lions, emo-elves, mailbox dancers, or green over-steroid men like creatures screaming "HULK SMASH" while riding a sparkle pony.

    2)  The game, as one other poster said, is the freshest game since Everquest 1/Eve Online.  It's a modern day rendition of our own world where the Illuminati and the Knights Templar are out in the open, not secret societies (tin foil hat).  The genre needed that.  And I like it.

    3) The community, and this is the BIGGEST breath of fresh air, is mature.  There is no such thing as Barrens chat.  No: "STFU NOOB!  L2P!"  I see more "Sure, let me give you advice on this but it's up to you to decide if it works for you" helpfulness from the community.  Ok, maybe this is the second biggest.

    4)  This game is NOT easy mode.  Not in my opinion.  It actaully makes you use those things called brain cells.  *covers mouth*  Oh God, I said a bad word in an MMO.  Not Easy Mode!  And Thinking!  GOD FORBID!   Yes, this for me is THE BIGGEST breath of fresh air.  As long as Funcom sticks with this, they will have a winner of an MMO.

So to answer your question, is it worth the $15/month?  For me, yes, it is.  But that is only my opinion.

I do love TSW and my answer is NO. For me, the fact that AO and AoC are both F2P and the fact that TSW is so designed to be F2P that Funcom need only announce it (maybe a couple of patches to go F2P) makes me want to "call Funcom's bluff" and wait for it to go F2P. I found that my local Best Buy has $20 AoC Funcom Point cards so I'll "subscribe" to TSW by buying one of them each month and get my money's worth converted into FcP. If the offline shop becomes available, I'll buy the items I want with the point cards. If it doesn't, then I'll have nest-egged my FcP for it's F2P conversion.

    To each their own.

We always worry about what our friends think, who cares what they think, it's all about you and your enjoyment.

Let them moan and groan if they can't afford $15 bucks a month, tell them their are plenty of F2P games to play out there.

I am not a big conspiracy/horror/x-files type but I am finding that Secret World is a lot more fun than I expected it to be. The open ended character development combined with 90% of the missions being repeatable gives it a very "play it my way and at my pace" kinda feel. The game is very explorer friendly and but for the story quests, the progression though a zone is completely non-linear.  You also discover missions all over the place. It is a refreshing change from games on rails. Finally, the story is great. SWTOR does a better job "telling" its story but TSW has a more engaging story to tell. As I mentioned, I am not normally into this kind of story but right now I can't stop playing because I just have to find out what happens next. Also, the investigation missions are top notch puzzles.

Sure there are some deficiencies. A number of the quests are bugged, probably because of their complexity. There is no auction house yet. Some dimensions seem to be bugged in certain zones. Such as, I always seem to enter Grim when I zone into savage coast. So they have some work to do. This is certainly not the Jesus MMO, but even with its problems I am very impressed with it so far. Simply put, it is fun.

This is one of the best things about the game. Not that there aren't any trolls at all but they do seem to be having trouble getting any traction. The over all vibe is very positive. People are very helpful. And I have noticed that most of the community is rapidly settled into a pattern of avoiding spoilers in general chat. Again, not that it never happens but new people learn quickly and change their behaviour. People still ask for solutions to mission all the time but now people send the answers in tells so others can enjoy those missions the way they were meant to be.

I could not possibly agree more with your review thus far. I am really shocked at how great the community has been in this game. They won't even post spoilers or tell you how to complete a quest in chat, which is awesome. It's also the first game I've played that fully encouraged the use of the in-game browser for research. Good stuff my friend.

I asked for a hint in general about the Kingsmouth code and I got 4 helpful tells asking what I needed help with in 30 seconds. Talked to a friend of mine who had been doing the investigation missions as well, and said he had the same experience.

I also like that some of the missions like the investigation and sabotage ones are more or less completely independant on level. They are a challenge no matter how far you have progressed. It really does make the game feel very open when it comes to progression. - in addition to the really wide range of mobs you can take on.

As I mentioned earlier - I think a subscription is well worth it.

I'm not entirely sold on the whole mature community shtick. There are certainly some that are very helpful and outgoing while others freely insultand abuse chat. Simply seems the same to me as every other mmo. Not really seeing anything different here.

Anyways, as always, the good and friendly players more than make up for the few elitist pricks and straight up assholes running around.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Just curious, what exactly about the design makes you think that it's designed for F2P?

Also - with only a couple of exceptions - pretty much every P2P MMO more than 3 years old is F2P now, so that's certainly not something unique to Funcom games.  All of SOE's games are, all of Turbine's games are, all of Cryptic's games are.  I don't think it's really publisher-specific.

I'm also in the 'worth the box price' group. Whether or not it's worth a monthly sub i've yet to figure out. I do doubt it though. It's the kind of game I'll probably go back to time and again when new content updates are added or if there's an expansion. After I've done that content though I'll probably cancel the sub until there is a new content update. If it goes FTP it'll always have a space on my harddrive.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

You buy the game and it's what 60 bucks? Another 60 to play for 2 months and you'd more than likely get to see all the game has to offer.

So is it worth 120 bucks to play the game?

I didn't think so, and I actually enjoyed the beta.

There just isn't enough content there yet for it to be worthwhile.

  • BlackbrrdBlackbrrd Member Posts: 811

@3-4thElf the game costs less than 50 bucks and comes with 30 days playtime the subscription is 15 bucks if you subscribe for a single month, so two months of playing costs 65 bucks, not 120.

First of all it's fifty and where do you get paying another 60 for two months? It is fifteen a month so it would be thirty. Plus it comes with a free thirty days. So if you did only play two months you would spend about 65 bucks total.

    Not 120...not even close

EDIT: Damn you Blackbrrd :P Beat me to it

What is happening to gamers these days? You care more about the verdict of some random people, you have never met on the internet ... than how they feel about playing the game? Come on now, you should easily be able to decide for yourself if you enjoy the game or not.

It is like bringing hand holding to a whole new level. People rip the "hype" of games all the time on these forums ... yet gamers are following it blindly around like mindless robots. You should be able to decide for your own if a game is good or not. You don't need someone else to tell you.

I just clocked 50h played sinece early access started. Finnished kingsmouth and half of the savage coast. I look for lore, listen to all the cutscenes and even done some quests twice (mailny for ap off course, but a hell of alot more fun than getting fish for skeggi more than once:)

So for me the game is worth every penny, and I decided to buy 1y sub today. Ragnar has said they have content planned for years, and I believe him!  There are more pvp battle sones in the pipeline, even another persistant warzone. With the smooth launch this game have had there is a lot more time for the devs to focus on content rather than patching bugfixes, as they did with aoc.

Some of our wallets give up more dust than dollars these days and its much easier on the ego to get a mass consensus than throw money at something we've barely seen video of.

I for one cannot afford to 'just try' every game that seems marginally interesting.

    Right, elven math there!

But still not worth a sub.

Worth the box price? Yes. Worth the monthly fee? No.

As things currently stand, the game just does not have the longevity warranting the monthly fee. TSW is similar to SWTOR as in it's too story based. It's a great story but once you finish it, there is really nothing else but some instances and some zergy PvP.

Of course, if Funcom starts releasing regular monthly content updates, my views may change but since most of the content requires voiceover work, I'm not sure if it's possible.

No. No game is worth $15 a month when a game like Guild Wars 2 is $0 a month.

    Yes indeed!

The game is good in the beginning, great when you have played for a while. I will spend a lot of time playing TSW the next months.
