pc crashing due to thermal event ¿?

uhmm I'm not sure I should necessarily be coming to the Gaming forums about this... but u guys know alot about computers ! ::::02::

so I leave to go to my buddy's house and when I come back my pc is off when i left it on. I turn it on and i get the following error on black screen with white lettering:

Alert! Previous shutdown due to thermal event.
Alert! Previous fan failure.
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

I think I am an idiot because I left my computer on for like 36 hours straight and I dont normally do that, but I;m wondering if that could be why this happened? did my pc just overheat and is my fan shot now or what!?¿

well now my pc is crashing every 10 minutes and I get the same alert message when I start her back up. I guess i should probably call up a technician about this huh::::35::

If you have a probe on your MoBo, we could get a lot further here, but until we know the temperatures, we can can only assume everything. Perhaps you should take your case off your tower and see if the results change?

Well you probably finished a long gaming session, with a demanding game, so it probably heated up, fan shut down for some reason when you were gone, then it over-heated and is now permanently damaged. (OR the power moderators or whatever the hell you call em might have also been damaged and is giving your cpu too much power and its either overheating, or overheated and is now permenently damaged.)

It could also be if you have speedfan like me, and if you kept the fans running too low or too high. I did that a couple games, like my computer went up around 3 to 5 c cus I was running my fans on to low for cs:source. It could be that your comp freaked out cus my comp jus started freakin out a lil while ago and then I turned on my ac and now its good.

I find that if I open warcraft my pc crashes way faster then if I just get on the internet (u guys are prolly like duhhhhhhhh)

yeah i think there might be permanent damage i dunno i really hope not /cry
How can i check the temperature of my pc? ¿ ?

and how safe is it to have my pc run with the case open..? I'm thinkin about putting a lil fan down there with the case open to help keep it cool.
I better post this quick, she's getting pretty warm again::::33::

and i should mention that I am very computer retarted, so go easy on me... I dont know what a probe on my Mojo is or whatever u said kiamde lol.

Stupid question but is your fan still working? Sounds pretty strange that it would start over heating all of the sudden.

Youre cooling system on your motherboard could be broken or any of the fans within the computer...but thats only my opinion, im only 14...

  • Is this a Dell computer?

We have all Dell's at my office.... GX260's, 270's and 280's.  We have had this 'thermal event' issue with a couple of our 270's and 280's now.  Every time I've checked, the fan/cooling system is working just fine.  I even went as far as to take some canned air to the fan and heatsink to make sure it wasn't dust.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but if it happens just once your probably ok.  If it gets to the point where it is happening often, call Dell and see about a motherboard replacement (which is what we had to do).

if a fan IS broken, I don't reccomend starting and restarting and starting again the computer (since crashing every 10 min) until you get it fixed, it could damage the cpu

From what you've said, i'm 90% sure it's your fan that's broken. The same thing happened to me a few months ago. My fan broke and whenever I turned on my computer, it turned off after having it on for about 5 minutes. I guess it overheated really fast or something, causing it to shut down by itself. I replaced the fan but I found out that some parts on my computer were fried due to overheating from repeatedly turning it back on whenever it shut down.. Try replacing your cooling system and see what happens.

yeah this is a dell computer.
I have a limited cash flow so I hope getting my cooling system replaced wont be too much of a problem...
If it shuts off again now I just wont turn it back on until I have it looked at. I don't think I'm under warranty with Dell because I bought this pc off ebay like 1 1/2 years ago ::::05::

this may be my last post for awhile... *gulp*::::07::

uhmm it's been a few hours and I did some Gaming and stuff and I think i might be fine now. I got an additional fan blowing in to my pc as well just in case. =)

thx for suggestions hopefully it's the end of this nonsense

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php  - monitor tempuratures in your comp, post the highest it ever got so we can help, and what kind of processor it is.

but i think its perment damage, so you prolly need a new processor.   getting better cooling, can cost you alot around 300 (watercooling, phase cooling, etc.)

or just newer, better, more powerfull fans can cost you less than 100.

So, you have the PC opened up? Just look and see if the fan on the CPU is spinning. It's hard to miss, it's the only big fan in the middle of the case attached to a heatsink. It probably has an Intel sticker in the center. I'm sure you have the stock Intel heatsink on and the thing is a pain to remove. I wouldn't suggest replacing the cooler to the average person. Take it back to Dell and get them to fix it, blowing a fan on it is not the solution. Do you plan on running it like that for however you have the PC?
