SWTOR will more than compete with WoW

Well the title is what EA said anywyas .. I'm just wondering where all the gas went.

E3 2011: BioWare: Old Republic 'will more than compete' with World of Warcraft

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/306437/bioware-old-republic-will-more-than-compete-with-world-of-warcraft/

The article focuses on BioWare cofounder Ray Muzyka.

Notible quotes from the article:

"We've been testing the game aggressively for quite a long time... and the focus for us as we head towards launch is on security, stability, saleability and retention," he said.

Muzyka continued: "There are ten of millions, tens of tens of millions of potential consumers for this game because Star Wars is the biggest IP in the world and that's a factor that can't be underestimated."

"I have tremendous respect for the folks at Blizzard, but I think we're building a product that will more than compete."

Quite good PR, wouldn't you all agree? :-)

What did you expect them to say? "Our game will be mediocre and way underperform WoW."

Added to favorites. I have a feeling this is a good reply to every hyperbole game is a success post.

Quite a sales pitch for a year ago wasn't it? Wonder how many investors bit on that and now......busted.

I am sure WoW were like "whatever dude" at the time.

First I'd like to say, I'm still waiting on them to finish those Timeline videos. It has to be about a year since the last one was made and in that time the game has barely changed since beta so it's not like they've been doing much else lol.

I guess overall I just never get tired of people quoting EA Bioware statements, it's always good for a laugh.

They had to say that kind of crap.

They just wanted people to buy the damn game.

They're not going to say "Well, but half a year in, the game will be limping like a zombie on its last leg."

Thanks for that. made my day.

You really can't fault Bioware for saying that, that's what marketing is about. You can laugh at the people who just believed it without trying the game first though.

He was wrong, just like every other studio that tries to compete and imitate WoW, if they would've made a game that was unique and not a single player game I think it would've fared better.

It's true, every game that has come out since WoW and claiming they'll compete with or kill WoW... has killed themselves, and SWTOR is on its way with killing themselves.

A good game shouldn't even have WoW in mind, they should think outside the box and have their own way in running the game, not trying to be another WoW clone or WoW wannabe thinking they'll pull WoW players. Unfortunately there aren't even any games like that, Secret World is a frigging joke.

Almost everyone who makes a Star Wars themed game over-estimates the value of this IP. (or any IP for that matter)

If you build a good game, they will come.  Create crap, and no IP in the world will rescue the title.

Wow was a one time hit. It caught the public unaware. It wont happen again. TITAN will face exactly  the same sort of problems any new AAA title wil face: huge initial success and trouble with retention. It will be the second part  that which will mark it as a success or failure. Forget about keeping 11 million subscribers for years. That will not happen again..Those subscriber will be playing freemium games (perhaps titan will choose this model too)   or swapping to the new flavour of the month.

I wonder what Blizzard is thinking when devs say this stuff.

  • wolfmannwolfmann Member Posts: 1,159

Tens of tens of millions of Star Wars fans yeah..

Fans of Vader, Luke, Han, Chewie, Stormtroopers, Leia(preferably in slave costume, oh lala)... You know, what got most "older" people into Star Wars in the first place.

Nothing of this is in SWTOR, nothing... The only thing in SWTOR is the glowbat, and that does not make a good Star Wars fan honeytrap.

For the millions of Star Wars fans, there's more to Star Wars than a glowbat, yet nothing of that is found in the game, or for the last decade, found in any Star Wars game, thus... not even Star Wars fans bother with Star Wars games.

I would have to wonder if they actually believed that. What WoW does, it does well. If SWToR was to compete with WoW, it would have to do what WoW does, but better and I don't think that happened. Everywhere that WoW and SWToR overlap in mechanics or game play, WoW is better.

SWToR did have superior story telling, personal spaces (ships) and companions...but the rest of the game had a negligible or a negative impact. Especially if you compared it to WoW.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

  • jerlot65jerlot65 Member UncommonPosts: 788

I think SWTOR surpassed wow.  I think its a superior product.  I have tons more fun in SWTOR then in wow.

So ya, SWTOR more then competed with wow.....At least in my eyes.  But hell who the else cares what other people think?

People who invested 300m$ in SWTOR project and would like their monies back...with hefty profit on top...in this decade.

Well... You, when your play experience will deteriorate because of the lack of players => lack of updates thingy.

And that's the main difference with single, offline games that you can enjoy alone for years.

The annoying thing is that a Star Wars IP themed MMO done correctly would have blown WOW out of the water. I dont give a crap about all the Legacy stuff i just want to feel immersed in the world and sit down on my ship

Actually, WoW blew a lot of smoke up BioWare's skirts.   Can't remember what exactly was said, but lots of SWTOR fans gleefully posted all that in the SWTOR, GFAQs and MMORPG forums.    Go back to late last year, if you've got the patitience, and you'll see it.

After playing Star Wars for about 4months I could tell the ship was already at the bottom of the ocean next to the titanic getting photographed by mini subs. There were so many things they could of fixed right off the bat. You know what there first big ovrhaul was to gimp players subs ,nnot to fix there engine or bugs or possible endgame or put in a ice cream shop ..but to piss off half of there commiunity right of the bat.........after that I said good by and good riddance swtor will be off server or sold to another company in a year.......and talk about customer service call them up and you get a 1985 recording from the doctors who started bioware and can't talk to anyone at a company tthat size .......on the upside the recording was funny.
