Is it just me or are female characters a little bit oversexualized?

Most of the pictures your seeing is from Tera or GW2. The last one is off from Queen's Blade only avaiable in Korea.

It's not porn but the correct term for it is called ecchi. But while I look at these pictures I see them no different than what one would probably see at a local club in the real world with exotic girl dancers.

Also Saints Row 3 had the same exact thing including a specailized purple bat. And blurred out full nudity.

Say what you want about the Queen's Blade MMO. But they're the first I've seen where the armor you wear gets battle damaged during combat. Sadly the point of it is to disrobe the avatar... But I'd like to see some helmets getting dented or something in the future. lol

    Let the disrobing begin!

It does make sense that armor would eventually tear in a more realistic properties. The girls off Queen's Blade are getting hit with all sorts of lasers, claws, and robot mecha enemies even with gattling guns.  I doubt armor would be able to take so much damage without falling off in peices at one point unless it's binded with magical non-scraping properties.

Besides that the game is rated 18+ which justifies it's much mature content!

Hmm it's really strange here when people don't come to the terms of understanding what fantasy is, fiction, or an unhealthy alienation of sexuality to the point of phobia.

Either way I am most glad that the koreans and the japanese are the leading industry in allowing players to truly try the meaning of fantasy and fictional gaming despite some black-bar censoring in JP that doesn't make much sense hahaha.

It beats being covered up head-to-toe in conserative clothes in real life all day long, 24/7 a week. Not even a belly permitted. No rhinna, none of those songs. No rap, no MTV music videos, none of that. Not even a music video with women in their grown 40's if their breast are showing on their shirt at the top or basicually 90% of the music-video industry. Very Strict.

However I had a friend who has recently given me some clothes to try out. It was the first time I ever wore a spaghettie tank-top and those summer shorts girls like to wear. Felt so strange and different I was literally checking myself over to see if anything wasn't showing and was trying to pull my shirt down longer!

Then she told me how pretty I looked and It brought out natural beauty that was already there. Made me smile much!

But what more from a unrealistic video-game character? Is the female body that truly bad it must be shunned and demonized?

Toddlers & Tiaras I think is a show that can show you how they can go together.

    Guild Wars 2 does not.

    Well, I was just kidding.

I just don't think that MMOs, or at least those that I have played, are a problem.

I don't equate what one wears (or not) as sexualisation nor what they look like, it's another thing if the female characters are constantly bending over shaking their behinds and making sexual innuendos left and right etc, not that I mind that though..

G-strings and tassles, all the way.

Especially if they're wearing them while beheading a monster.  Thats just... heavenly to me.

    So... yeh.  Whatever.

As a girl, I can only say that I think the only wrong thing about this is "sexy girls" has to be compared to prostitutes?? Many girls like to dress sexy, look at halloween. We generally like to look pretty, not always for men but for ourselves and other girls.. take this comment for example "omg where did you buy that dress? I love it!" <- yay :D

In the games I often go for the clothes that look prettiest, sometimes their "skimpy" sometimes they are a full robe, all depending on design.

This games really have hot male characters too from what I can see :D

    I don't mind really, i'm oversexualised too.

Too sexy for my body .........

If Age of Conan can get away with having half the lady toons running around with their actual bare jumblies bouncing around everywhere, well then......

I think GW2 will be okay.  Although with some of the clothing, just a few of the costumes, Im trying to figure out why they even bothered with clothes.  Just pull a string or thread and poof.  Naked.  But whatever.  Most of them are incredibly artfully done with a sort of very sexy Victorian era thing going on.  Its nice work.

People need to learn that sex sells. Thats why they do it. Its a part of games now get used to it. I personally don't mind it.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

Wait, it´s 2012 and we still did not understand that women crave attention from their male peers online just like they do in real life?

I have met tons of actual, real female players (not guys dressing as sluts for their kink) due to the type of guilds i often join and in 10 years of mmo gaming i have met like only two who actually followed their words and wore non-revealing outfits.

Yet every single one of them would agree with this topic and complain about "oversexualization" even though they are the first ones to choose the sexiest gear to play with their friends /e-crush / what not.

Yes, next to no woman enjoys a creepy guy drooling all over their characters,  but they love when their guildmates/e-crush/friends/ close persons comment over their choice of clothing and how much they like the looks of their character just as much as they enjoy their interest´s reaction to their outfit/makeup irl.

And there is nothing wrong with it.

    This!

If the costumes are well-design i'll wear it. Doesn't matter if it looks skimpy or full robed. Naturally we're attracted to the quality hand-crafted looked of the clothing and the design effort put in it. And yes there are girls out there who don't mind to dress skimpy in video-games. Why should they be prohibited of doing so like 5-year olds?

If the game that has old, outdated 2000ish type graphics and then clothes that look like they've just been slapped on a painted character then I might wear full-clothing for the sake of eyes not bleeding out.

Here's the thing though: A lot of people complaining about TERA's wear are those who aren't giving credit how good the crafting of the clothing actually looks. It hugs close to the body and they used the top-level graphics to provide a good quality as possible. It's not painted on gunk that looks shouddy and terrible. And the model is attractive in itself as well which adds to the overall tone.

Second part is the character's backround. You have a race of literal rebellious demon-women with horns and swords. Last time I looked up what demon was I never really saw succubus and the such dressed up to their necks like nuns in bland clothes and covering their butts with their hands in shame. Their the total opposite. So yes Castanics live up to their name's sake. She's an independent warrior and fierce in the heat of battle. She is a leader and not a follower. She dresses to impress in her own exotic environment. She's sexy and she knows it and she's not afraid to show it.

And how many games in NA have the female as the lead character in the game? Usually she's just a side-kick selection type while all the guys take the glory and recongniztion. It's clear that the female is the empowerist in this game, and the game itself caters to that empowerist.

On a personal note yes I do like Eastern-Artwork much more than Western simply because of the way they have the ability to bring out young, sexy and cute and curves in their artwork, down to the core of the clothing style.

Western artwork I feel is much more bland and somewhat juvunille. The females are either covered up too much or they have this ugly muscle-bound comic book style that looks terrible, or they look mid-wive's in their 40's.

Guild Wars 2 takes a step ouside of the box and attempts to bring a blend of both more Eastern-Artwork to the table inside a Western-Created game. And I do thank them for that!

The Op likes his women in Burqas. He didn't mention that the men show as much skin as the women in some cases.

Yes because all men are respresented realistically in video games too imageimage. Yeah if we're all on steroids that is.

Standard answer: Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Joe Shuster.

The art style was set in the middle of the last century.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

As anybody ever wondered if men aren't offended and feel oversexualized? I don't but, just saying.

society as a whole does not care about men in general. If a woman goes missing it is treated differently than a man etc. It usually women and children, not men and children you know the usual stuff.

I am not talking about equality stuff.

so to answer your question society does not care if men are offended.

So, i can't protest against the male desings and cloths in the game? That's some BS!

Looks fine to me. Maybe a bit tame if anything. Actually, much sexier options are badly needed. In the most popular mmo in N/A, females basically look like nuns unless it's in a CGI clip.

  • In my world oversexualized is an oxymoron.

    Wise words. Thank you :)

I completely agree with OP. The charr females are way too oversexualized. Same with the Asura females. It's almost demeaning to women.

The more I'm around the forums on this site, the more bitter I become.
