My answer to fuel costs

RazorbackRazorback Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 5,253

Well on Friday I picked up this little beauty for $1500 AUD. Its in MINT condition for a 1985 car. Its a Subaru Sherpa, 2 cylinders 700cc (just over half the cc of my motrobike ROFL). It costs $25 to fill and it will got for 2 or 3 weeks on a tank image. It had 12 months registration (worth $600 alone) and a new JVC CD player.

So Im doing my bit for the environment, but more importantly Im doing it coz Im a tightass bastard who hates paying like $100 for a tank of gas that is gone in under 10 days... I LOVE it!

BTW thats a rain puddle under it not a leak image

Thats one sweet LiL car. And in great shape for being 20 yrs old. I'm sure I'll be doing the same and getting a fuel efficient car myself.

Yeah man my bike is my wank status symbol. I have never been into cars so it just does not matter to me at all what sort of car I drive, so it may as well be one that is really cheap to run. If I want to go for a blast I get the bandit out and go scare myself witless and make some girls get all gushy... but to get to work and back... this thing is the shizzle!

If the Japanese didn't hog the hybrid market, which would make hybrids cheaper, I would consider buying one. Gas is just out of hand for me, since I live off only 450 a month.

Exactly. And spending probably 50+ a week on gas, cant exactly do a whole lot with whats left.

Ah the joys of being a college student.

Hell yeah... last week I paid $105 for a tank and it is almost gone in my other car (6cyl ford 3.8litre). Its so damn expensive Im thinking of draining out the 1/4 of a tank thats left to put in this lil rocket and it will prolly fill it LOL.

I miss the cruzyness of the ford and the electric windows and crap but I just cant afford to run the thing... My Mo in Law reckons she wants to buy it off me and I said she can have it for $1500, so I basically get the new one for zippo... but I feel bad about selling it to her coz it costs so much to run image

I'd just be concerned about how that 20 year old frame holds against 5,500 lbs of SUV barreling down the road at 50mph. Just remember they are still more common and you have to "share" the road with them. Plus, that thing has no airbags... anywhere. Plus, old. And small.

Anyway, if you are in the hospital faced with $200,000 in spine reparation costs, you might sorta regret getting such an eggshell just to save on gas. At least with your motorcycle you are more likely to get thrown in an accident. That thing would be like a cheap FedEx box crumpling around you.

Or you may never get in an accident and save money in the long run. Who's to say? ::::02::

EDIT: Can't diss old Subarus too much though... I used to have one of these:

This was my 1991 Ford Festiva.  Every time I drove it I thought I was going to die, and I'm not joking you.  Of course I would get 50 MPG and was able to fill the tank for $12 back in 1997, but come on.

I have a 04 Mitsu lancer and can last 2 weeks on a tank of gas. it costs 25 dollars to fill my tank up at about $3 USD a gallon.
