I'm not playing right now because I'm waiting for GW2. I've been playing Vanguard on and off for years. Solo, groups, and with a RL friend and his girlfriend. Anyway I would like to offer my experience with playability vs. graphics.
Many complain about coding, many love the graphics to this day, some don't. BUT everyone could agree that different people have different experiences. Me, well I would like to offer some facts that I strongly believe to be true :
Since I've been playing Vanguard for years WITH FRIENDS and with MANY COMPUTERS. I learned a few things.
My back room computer is a slightly out dated gaming computer. My living room has a cheap $400 HP laptop hooked up to my large TV. My friend has a full all out gaming computer with all the latest graphics card and 12 Gig of ram. His girlfriend has another cheap laptop.
Guess what.....out cheap lap tops play Vanguard better than all our gaming computer's.....What ?....Yes....Would you like to know why ?.....Because we have all our graphics settings turned down to low on the cheap ones. Vanguard my not look great, BUT THE GAME PLAYS FLAWLESS !!!!.....Their is something wrong with the coding But only on high settings.
My friend with his power rig. At first refused to turn anything down. Crashing, lag, hitching, you name it he had it. Yet he refused to lowering anything....His ego with his race car computer insisted on the max. Two weeks later he lowered his settings and played Vanguard flawless for the remainder of our time playing.
What is with ego ?....What is with needing such great graphics ?....Sure I like eye candy, but I would take good game play any day. And Vanguard has the best game play of any mmo to date in my opinion, at least before F2P.

That said, I have very few issues with VG and I play on medium-high settings on a 2009 mac using bootcamp. Sure there are hickups, nodeline loading and the occational crash, but nothing gamebreaking. The game still looks good imo; polygon count, aa and maxed out bloom is not always necessary to create an atmospheric game.
VG is lacking in the optimization department though, and a lot of people with modern computers will simply not accept having to play a 2007 game on low settings.

Vanguard's graphics are fine, and it seems most of the engine issues have been resolved over the years.
Graphically the terrain and sky are fantastic, as is the variety.
The animations of the models themselves are pretty bad, though.
