Why do you say that WoW can't do, say, arenas on equal footing? I've seen plenty of arena tournaments that state otherwise (Gamescom to pick a recent one).
And WoW has been played as an e-sport before, I'm just saying GW2 would be far easier to manage for all involved. The idea is that someone said if WoW can't be, then how could GW2? It makes no sense, since WoW actually can be. But unless Arena gear is simply given to these players in WoW games, there's the extra element of farming for all of it, then making sure everyone is balanced. Sounds like a headache to me anyway.
The obvious answer, that people seem reluctant to acknowledge, is that maybe GW2 doesn't require as much skill to master as WoW does. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing though, but at least I said it.

Played GW2 and WoW pvp - much more WoW but simply because GW2 hasn't been released yet. "Button bashing" is completely false. Maybe in Pve holiday content, but definitely, DEFINITELY not in arena.

In a way that's probably true, and in another way not so much. See, almost all of WoW's PvP relies on burst damage. You can be good with Dots but it's not as effective as a well placed fireball for example. In GW2, it takes a lot more to down someone, I had a Guardian vs. Guardian fight 1 on 1 in SPvP that lasted literally 10 minutes. WoW fights don't last that long because there are always a few skills that do massive harm to the other player (unless you're a druid, and then after a while people will just ignore you until they have help to take you down).
The skill in WoW comes from using it at the right time, not just in selecting the right skills. If someone uses their strongest attacks before you do, you could be screwed. So yes, that takes mastery. In GW2, a more consistent level of damage is applied throughout the fight but unlike WoW, if another player shows up while you're fighting someone, it's not a near certainty that you're dead meat, you could still beat them both.
I think they require different strategies, but I don't think one is better than the other. Besides, not many people have "mastered" GW2 PvP, so it's hard to tell at this point. All I know is that WoW doesn't require much skill from 10 to 70 if you have heirlooms. Just roll your face across that keyboard.

i'm in the camp that the obvious answer is that the entire premise is a lie.
having played both games it makes more sense to me.
not that playing either games is rocket science, but comments like "gw2 doesn't require skill" is just ridiculous and does nothing but make the person making the comment look like they have no clue what they are talking about.
like the guy who said wow has longer duration CC abilities so it takes more skill to play.. why would you bother arguing with such an asinine comment? it falls flacid by itself, nobody has to point out the uselessness of such a statement.

The obvious answer, that people seem reluctant to acknowledge, is that maybe GW2 hasn't launched yet and the people you face in PvP are still learning the game?
Once the game actually launches and people had a month or so to practice and learn their class, maybe we can revisit this discussion and decide which game requires how much skill and why. Until then, one scrub out button mashing another scrub is not indictive of GW2 PvP or how much skill is required to master it.
It would most likely be that the threshold of the skill and/or gear needed in either game for a player to be a reasonable threat to other players is very much tilted to gw2 allowing any player to be a threat, since the benefits of gear is very finite in how it affects your proformance. Yet even in wow when you get to max rank/gear in pvp or play against another player in equal gear, it is more about who uses their classes abilities correctly, manuvers the best (such as losing, keeping the target outside their attack range if melee, and such), as well as who pulls off their rotation the best, and just who is lucky with crits an such.

Because in wow its a gear chase to be PVP viable and all about having the right macros?
Question is how come you are not congratulating her on finding a game she is able to win in rather than trying to say some how its because the game is too easy (which when you are using wow as a baseline is a laughable statement anyway).

Indeed. It's a good thing the players have equal gear at tournaments (season 9).
maybe its the lack of a full healer class , thats what i put it down to , i also pvp but im not that great at it,
i did do above average in gw2 beta though, and i just put it down to not having healers around .
Well he also said she lost to an 84 even at 85, so that means they were not in bg's (since as far as I remember, 84's and 85's can't be in the same bg) and duels don't allow heals. I don't think she had a healer. Unless you're talking strictly about the differences between games and not the OP's post.

I don't think anyone's "mastered" GW2 right now, so I don't think you can judge that yet.
Oh how I can't wait to see some of the peeps in sPvP. I wonder how many days it will take before the QQ threads start pouring in. Sometimes I think the people convinced GW2 takes no skill are just looking for an excuse to justify them losing. There are pleanty of videos that show the difference in skill for this game, there's no need to engage a strawman argument like the OP's. But hey, wish your 'girlfriend' best of luck.
It's funny how this discussion about skill still keeps going on ,when it was proven through his posting history, on page 4 already, that this guy is lying.
It has nothing to do with gear grind, I played many BGs under lvl 85 where most people run around with quest gear, and the avarage skill is very high, the people know how to play.
well gw2 is new, and people dont know how to pla and try out things so the pvp level is quite low.
however, the arena teams in wow are on the top of all mmo pvp, skill wise.
Also since it was a rogue that had took her being lower level, and i am guessing very much lower geared comparitively. THat she never learned when to use what cc/stun breaking abilities an items, since for most of the rather high geaared players i see that get stomped in wow either use their cc/stun beakers in the wrong order or on the wrong cc/stuns. Also a wow warlock plays nothing like a elementalist, or even necromancer in playstyle in gw2, as such it might just be that she is very comfy with those styles more. Most people use the gear in wow to say that game requires no skill, when in truth it requires in many places it still requires skill, issue is the gear will always give a advantage to those with it an normally most players do not yet have the needed grasp of the machanics in the game to level the playing field. I do agree though that the advantage given by the grade of gear is way too high in disparity between them, making a fully decked players a frightening powerful force against lower geared players, but i do not thuink that gear should have a small or no effect on your character's proformance. Even in rl the quality off your gear can have a pretty large effect on how well you proform a skill, regardless of how skilled you are at that skill or task.

not all the bgs have 84 and 85 together but some of the larger ones do like av.
IMHO the toon she is playing is possibly a noobcannon. Not sure, dont play either gw2 or wow, dont like themepark kiddy games. but noobcannon is my guess.

Really no such thing in GW2, no class exists that can decimate in PvP on raw dps alone.
