completely persistent world possible?

I was thinking today, as I read Ghosts of Ascalon, that it would be really cool if with expansions or updates, that the entire game would be expanding and the space-time in-game would be changing.  Say that there are underwater volcanoes and new lands began forming over the next 2 centuries of their time.  Or that humans began to expand more, or that the sylvari become the dominating race because the Nightmare Court begins to want to change all of life.  Of that Ascalon was cleansed and the city rebuild.  or that the Norn begin to move back north after the defeat of the dragons.  I feel like most games use their expansions to just add on 5 levels and maybe a new area that you can portal to.  i find it dull and lazy, and altogether a linear world just based upon making some money.  a big example I think of would be lord of the rings.  honestly, i didnt play the game past the first quest, purely because the first time i had a computer of high enough quality to play it well, was when the first BWE for GW2 happened and couldn't take LOTRO.  However, the books took a period of 3 years, and at the end the shire is taken over by Saruman and moderated by thugs and roughians.  There is persistance in that.  So, either time in game is maybe 4 months in game to 1 month our time, or that time could be expanded more just for story development's sake, but essentially what I'm saying is that I think it would be awesome if that rather than just adding on a new zone and a few levels, ANet could really reshape the world to reflect changes in the story and time.  I'd love to see more of Edge of Destiny being together, for there to be reparations between the relationships and for Rytlock and Logan to get back to their brotherhood, and for Jenna to take a much more active role in the storyline for humans than just stopping a conspiracy against her.  is this asking too much?

I'd say there's a very strong possibility of that happening. They did that w/ GW1 after all.

For the world environments I am not sure if they will do it without patches or expansion but they did state there would be changes to dynamic events.

Apparently the story that gets told throughout the various dungeons is about re-uniting Destiny's Edge....

i haven't heard that, but that would be awesome.  honestly, i really can't wait until gaming with cerebral connection is possible like the Matrix or Pendragon (if anyone knows the Pendragon [not king arthur pendragon] series).  that way the emersion is ridiculous and the story feels more real.

It would be great but i see one big problem, if they change the world in a permanent way (such as rebuilding a city like ascalon or sinking an island) it would change the map, destroying the old content that took place in that area and replacing it with the new content, this mean that new players wont be able to play that content.

unless they did something like GW1 Pre-searing / Post-searing;  but that would split the playerbase

What do you mean can't wait? It already is like that, your life is the game, and is all you know. Take the red pill.

Easy enough to avoid.  Have a Visions of the Past area where you can visit zones as they once were.

Though there may well be a certain amount of loss of old content when they modify DEs over time.

If they make a new town or sink an island or something, its not a major problem if new players don't get to view that content.  If the world is persistent and there is a possibility of losing towns/zones it will make the game that much more a blast to play.
