Does anyone else find the community lacking?

cloud8521cloud8521 Member Posts: 878

Simply put, i am finding everything in the game seems to be handed on a silver platter (not as in the game is easy, just  everything is easy to do.) selling things to others?  click O and done, play a DE run around find one and play easy (well it may kill you :P),  and so on.

To me though, these systems  although great for the game may have a diffrent effect on the community themselves. It feels like theres just a lack of communication!  sure i have 20 people playing on my screen with me, but i try to comment on something to them and i just get no responce back.  slowly I am feeling a disconnect with the community as a whole while playing.

Part of why i beleive this is happenong is silmply, its not nessiary to talk at all to play.  so people dontand it jsut ceates a  emty air. sure occationally people will talk but for a game like this it really would be nice to have banter going on. And i was on the Unofficial RP server. its  nigh impossible to take up a role and play it if no one says anything back to you.

what do you guys think?

I RPed multiple times, ran across other people RPing, did a couple pickup groups, and spent about 80% of my time grouped with various friends of mine the rest of the time.

    So... no.

Sorry to hear your time was lacking. :(

its not unusual, most of the time its just people being too busy playing to talk to each other, that and players don't need to communicate that much anymore, this isnt really a new thing, its a trend i've noticed in other games. The only thing to do is join a guild, you'll have more luck as players do tend to communicate more if there is a guild channel etc, even in Eve you get this, where the local channel is largely ignored and corp chat is used to communicate. its probably the only way your going to be able to do some RP'ing too, you just need to find an RP guild that you can join, im sure their out there. image

Sadly, pretty much. Community overall took a huge dive when the masses entered the genre.

that wont work for me, i guess that just means im screwed in this department. Even so, its just not nice to see people not conversing in the outside world.  hard to  meet new friends and such that way.  Even running my own guils ive always liked to just converse with others. too bad honestly

It will change after release, right now everyone is busy testing the game while test lasts.. I didn't even communicate with my guild, didn't look into chat.. had no time for that.. When the game is out we will have plenty of time to talk, play, explore, socialize etc etc.. So don't worry.
  • ThrashbargThrashbarg Member Posts: 125

Don't look for socialization in the middle of a DE, people are busy dodging/healing/rezzing/attacking, and you should be too. The old tank 'n spank style MMOS gave plenty of time for chat: set taunt/dps/heal macro and chat while you try not to fall asleep doing the same run over and over.

I saw lots of conversation in Lion's Arch when everyone got kicked from WvW at once, and I expect most of it to take place there (or around other towns) after launch.

The other thing is, during beta/stresstests everyone is in a hurry to do as much as possible in game.

Don't worry, there will be plenty of good community.

Its more about after the fight bater then durring the fight  im talking about. or sometimes just  near hearts and such.

otherwize its just map talk which is not quite as engageing to me, as its generally just questions and  hardly banter about the awesome fight you just had and is horrible for RP.

Could also be the fact that everyone knew their time was limited since it was a stress test.  I know I rushed through things due to limited play time.  Hopefully a lack of urgency post release will open people up a bit more socially.

    Compared to what?

While I agree I often find myself playing with people I haven't said anything to nor them anything to I, the alternative in other games in the genre is instead of teaming up and not talking you end up stealing each others kills and so on without talking. I prefer GW2 where I am teaming up all the time and require no additional effort to talk than any other MMO where the norm is to compete over kills and quest objects.

I found the complete silence when saying something pretty wierd too.

For instance when I asked if anyone had any supplies when there where like 15 people beating on a door, and not even any enemies around, no one said a thing.

A few things at work. One is you really don't need to communicate a whole lot throughout newer games. Back in EQ days you were kind of forced to by camps,  and wandering monsters that could squish low level players. Leveling was tough so you wanted to make friends that could help you get through.  I have not played GW2 yet, but from what I have heard you really don't need to group up or communicate unless you choose too. So a lot of people will do the absolute easiest thing, not talk and blast through.

Another is the Hotbar combat does not lend itself towards typing. If you are in combat its much tougher to type a message than it was in older games.

nto everything needs to be compared to something. In this kind of game i kind of expect banter to give it a feel like there are accually people there. otherwize this ight as well be a SP game with a ton of AI NPC's. just how i feel.

    I guess so. *shrug*

Its probably going to be more of the same at launch, with a new game people are going to be running around everywhere doing things, i don't think many players are going to be stood around just talking, once the initial 'furore' wears off that may change, but, for the social aspect i really do think you will benefit more from being in a guild, it will also give you access to their Voice servers, TS3 or Ventrilo etc, most guilds especially those with any kind of PVP orientation, will most likely have one, its another reason to join a guild imo, as you will definitely get more out of the game if you are in one.image

Don't get me wrong I am just trying to understand and I certainly don't take offense to how you feel.

I will say this however because I think you might be overlooking this point/ The dynamics of other human players is a hard thing to replicate with AI and when devs try it they normally fail.

i just appeciate open chat more. but if you wish to contine to say im screwed for liking it more, then  go on.  for me it feel like im talking though a radio at people in guild chat, while /say feels more loke i can rp and converse with others on a more real leavel. but thats just my quirk.  plus i find it makes the world feel more real whe you can talk to a person right next to you, and you dont even need to know the perosn and they will say hi. especially in a game set up in this way where  gettign together is suppsoe to be easier.

lol im not saying they really are AI, but  the quietness of it all does not make them feel like they are real people.

People just instinctively coordinating with each other. Suddenly finding yourself working towards a common goal because those damn bandits are blocking the bridge again or that bull is tearing through the fields is a great feeling ... all without

"Hey, you wanna help with this quest?"

    "Yeah, sure, invite me."

    "Can't, you're still in a group."

    "Okay, again."

"Oops, group is full. Wait, I'll convert it into a raid."

    "Okay."

"Oh... what is that weird letter in your name?"

"Its an Ý ... you do it with ALT+2541."

    "Okay."

    "Nevermind, quest is over."

    ...

Glad those days are over. I myself see the silent coordination as one of GW2's biggest advantages.

In a game like TERA or EverQuest 2 which have global chat channels, you see tons of chatter everywhere.  Even games with only regional chat channels have plenty of chatter in populated areas.  GW2 feels like FFXIV in that you see people running around, but you never speak to any of them and they never speak to you.  Without seeing the chatter, all the people I run DEs with may as well be robots.  Even when soloing, I appreciate active chat channels as I'm reminded that I'm playing a game with other living, breathing humans.

Yeah, I know your not saying that. The point is it would be a massive task to achieve the same dynamics that other humans provide with AI. I doubt it could be done at all. So you cannot get the quality without it being a multiplayer game and it's that quality which is in question. The dynamics of the human interactions which to me atleast, cannot be compared with a single player game like you did in the quotes above.

totally fine with it being  easier to co-ordiate (with maybe just a few yellouts on statagy :P)

but its more jsut tlaking about how epic a fight was that you just went though, or commenting on somethign in the world which is odd or funny to osmone else experienceing it.

for example there is a heart quest where you can take rabit food over to the heart guy while the rabits  attack you stealing the food  and 10 people were there. I made a offhand comment about how  the rabits were kicking our asses, only to be met with silence....  kinda makes you feel like an outcast when  they dont say much back. like they are  ROBOTS out for my SOUL...... known fact robots dont have souls and must steal them

thats my gist of it. but i also like the chat bubbles image they make me feel happy.  And  being near to the perosn im talking to is a plus also!

same thread again and again and again

community is huge , just type gw2 on google and see how many fan sites , forums  , guild forums, help and such there are

the wiki for gw2 has already tons of infos on what you need to know about the game

community doesnt mean  people talk in game

so it always makes me laugh that someone judge that there is lack of community when actually it is really huge

make some research next time , thank you!
