Originally posted by Phry its not unusual, most of the time its just people being too busy playing to talk to each other, that and players don't need to communicate that much anymore, this isnt really a new thing, its a trend i've noticed in other games. The only thing to do is join a guild, you'll have more luck as players do tend to communicate more if there is a guild channel etc, even in Eve you get this, where the local channel is largely ignored and corp chat is used to communicate. its probably the only way your going to be able to do some RP'ing too, you just need to find an RP guild that you can join, im sure their out there.
that wont work for me, i guess that just means im screwed in this department. Even so, its just not nice to see people not conversing in the outside world. hard to meet new friends and such that way. Even running my own guils ive always liked to just converse with others. too bad honestly
Its probably going to be more of the same at launch, with a new game people are going to be running around everywhere doing things, i don't think many players are going to be stood around just talking, once the initial 'furore' wears off that may change, but, for the social aspect i really do think you will benefit more from being in a guild, it will also give you access to their Voice servers, TS3 or Ventrilo etc, most guilds especially those with any kind of PVP orientation, will most likely have one, its another reason to join a guild imo, as you will definitely get more out of the game if you are in one.
i just appeciate open chat more. but if you wish to contine to say im screwed for liking it more, then go on. for me it feel like im talking though a radio at people in guild chat, while /say feels more loke i can rp and converse with others on a more real leavel. but thats just my quirk. plus i find it makes the world feel more real whe you can talk to a person right next to you, and you dont even need to know the perosn and they will say hi. especially in a game set up in this way where gettign together is suppsoe to be easier.
GW2 is a social game, and the more you participate in it, the more you will get out of it, joining a guild is a natural part of that, finding the right guild is obviously important. I hear these kinds of arguments in Eve too, where players prefer not to join a corp, but really its because their loners who prefer to do their own thing, rather than do things as part of a group etc, in all honesty, you will get more out of the game if you join a guild, there will be more social interraction, and if your serious about RP'ing then you will find more of that if you join an RP guild, of which i am positive there are many, its no good complaining about people and the seeming lack of social interraction, if your not willing to participate, GW2 does support these things, its up to you to participate
People just instinctively coordinating with each other. Suddenly finding yourself working towards a common goal because those damn bandits are blocking the bridge again or that bull is tearing through the fields is a great feeling ... all without
"Hey, you wanna help with this quest?"
"Yeah, sure, invite me."
"Can't, you're still in a group."
"Okay, again."
"Oops, group is full. Wait, I'll convert it into a raid."
"Okay."
"Oh... what is that weird letter in your name?"
"Its an Ý ... you do it with ALT+2541."
"Okay."
"Nevermind, quest is over."
...
Glad those days are over. I myself see the silent coordination as one of GW2's biggest advantages.
totally fine with it being easier to co-ordiate (with maybe just a few yellouts on statagy :P)
but its more jsut tlaking about how epic a fight was that you just went though, or commenting on somethign in the world which is odd or funny to osmone else experienceing it.
for example there is a heart quest where you can take rabit food over to the heart guy while the rabits attack you stealing the food and 10 people were there. I made a offhand comment about how the rabits were kicking our asses, only to be met with silence.... kinda makes you feel like an outcast when they dont say much back. like they are ROBOTS out for my SOUL...... known fact robots dont have souls and must steal them
While I think it will improve a tiny bit say a few weeks after Launch when more people get the hang of combat and the game mechanics, I'm sorry to say your best bet for that kind of interaction is joining an RP Guild (and making sure you roll on one of the "unofficial" RP Servers).
GW2 is a fast moving game even when not engaged in a DE - listening to the NPCs and following them when the take off on their (and hopefully soon my) next adventure takes concentration and I'm going to miss things if I'm staring at my Chat Window. I noticed the same thing in SWTOR and TSW during Cutscenes/Conversations.
LOTRO and FFXI were/are better games for having time to communicate and (for those interested) potentially RP.
Having said that, my best suggestion for you would be to hang out in DA, LA, or whatever the closest "Main City" is to where you are planning to go and try to recruit a playing group before you set out. My guess is that is where the RPers will be hanging out to find like-minded players and "pre-planning" your adventures will net you a much higher chance of success than expecting "modern" online gamers to want to converse with you while performing feats of martial gymnastics (or honestly much of anything else in this day and age).
Eh, I kind of feel the same way... but just because I've never experienced what the OP has doesn't mean he's wrong. Personally, I think a lot of the conversation in this game will be between guild members. That's fine, since I rarely ever met friends just walking around the map doing quests. I find it hard to believe that most people do, in fact. At least not WoW and post-WoW; I met people by joining a random guild in Trade and then introducing myself. So the "problem" is not really a problem for me.
The idea that people are busier in this game than most MMOs is also a valid one. When you're being swept along a path of DE's, you don't have much time to talk.
I talked as much iin GW2 as I talked in games with a lot of timesinks (FF XIV/XI). People should stop blaming "community" and maybe just see that they are anti social.
Simply put, i am finding everything in the game seems to be handed on a silver platter (not as in the game is easy, just everything is easy to do.) selling things to others? click O and done, play a DE run around find one and play easy (well it may kill you :P), and so on.
To me though, these systems although great for the game may have a diffrent effect on the community themselves. It feels like theres just a lack of communication! sure i have 20 people playing on my screen with me, but i try to comment on something to them and i just get no responce back. slowly I am feeling a disconnect with the community as a whole while playing.
Part of why i beleive this is happenong is silmply, its not nessiary to talk at all to play. so people dontand it jsut ceates a emty air. sure occationally people will talk but for a game like this it really would be nice to have banter going on. And i was on the Unofficial RP server. its nigh impossible to take up a role and play it if no one says anything back to you.
what do you guys think?
same thread again and again and again
community is huge , just type gw2 on google and see how many fan sites , forums , guild forums, help and such there are
the wiki for gw2 has already tons of infos on what you need to know about the game
community doesnt mean people talk in game
so it always makes me laugh that someone judge that there is lack of community when actually it is really huge
make some research next time , thank you!
1. this thread is hardly the same as al lthe other threads here. i dont fallow other sites because i just havent looked.
2. i know the community is huge but that is not what this thread is about.
3. what does a wiki have to do with what i am saying.
4. talking in game is part of how a community can opporate, they can talk elsewere but i find it lacking that they do not make use of the /say function.
5. hold your laughter because you have nothing to laugh at.
6. no comment.
i do not appreciate being treated as i am trying to create trouble. or as if i was badmouthing the game.
i do have a point, if you do not agree with it then say so and be done with it.
communities communicate. so when i say i find it lacking personally, while asking others if they find it the same, i do not expect to be berated as such.
Originally posted by QSatu I talked as much iin GW2 as I talked in games with a lot of timesinks (FF XIV/XI). People should stop blaming "community" and maybe just see that they are anti social.
Well that seems unfair. Even though I disagree with the OP he has said people have been ignoring him completely when he tried to talk to them therefore calling him anti social doesn't make much sense. Also people have given reasons as to why that is, so it is probably not a one off thing either.
Personally I think it's better than in other games because I find more reason to cooperate and am not competing for kills and quest objects but I too recognise that I haven't been talking to anyone. Calling me anti social would be just as unfair.
Keep in mind that it was just a stress test. I also noticed a "drop" in conversations during this and the previous stress test but I find it natural, there were also less people during this stress test than a BWE. During BWEs there was almost always too many people chatting, discussing tactics for the hardest champion mobs, asking if some world boss spawned, calling for back-up for DEs etc
Block the trolls, don't answer them, so we can remove the garbage from these forums
Haven't gone through the posts but I am pretty sure people were not terribly talkative because they were too busy trying to cram as much GW2 as they can into 4 hours.
We really have to wait till a little after launch. When people stop charging into the content and just want to chill out.
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

Well I don't find the community "lacking" as you say but I do find it quiet like you. So it's a little of both.

Also this. If it doesn't get better within a month following launch, there might be something wrong (again, it doesn't bother me). Otherwise I can personally attest that every time GW2 is up and I'm playing, I feel very rushed and I just want the game to come out so I can settle in. Chatting in /say may or may not end up being part of that.

Also, to Tardcore.................. creepy.
still i think its best to bring things up before launch. seemed like a good ammount of time before headstart to get it out there, see if anyone have conserns.
but i should have reilized that if its not praise on MMORPG.com then its consitered a toll or something to disagree and fight againt. silly me for wanting a dicussion about it :P
The game removes the penalty for playing along side each other, which is good, because most MMOs today seem to be designed to train people to be anti-social towards other people. As people play and the inter-personal barriers start to be washed away, people will start to play more actively with each other.
Feeling friendly towards random people you run across is bound to eventually pay off with people reaching out to be more sociable. We have a lot of negative conditioning to overcome, but this game seems designed to do so. As people get deeper into the game, there will be more content that will benefit from, or require, grouping. The positive difference here is that far more players will be open to grouping with others because of the way the game conditions you to see playing along-side others as a positive thing.
People do actually help each other in this game, which is a good thing. A lot of people are already rushing to revive fallen players, lending a hand to someone in a difficult fight and actually joining forces, even if briefly, with people they run across, rather than turning and running the other way, which is something I've see a lot in other MMOs in recent years.
The community is already better than in most MMOs I've plaved since 2006 and I really do think things will continue to impove as the game helps to smooth away a lot of bad MMO habits peole have aquired in other games.

I don't think you're a troll and I certainly don't disagree with you. I know that my personal experiences have just been different or I'm looking for something other than what you're looking for, but again, you're not wrong to feel the way you do, and others have brought up this subject in the past. Maybe some of those people will chime in, and hopefully you end up finding a solution and enjoying this and any other MMO you play.

Ok careful now - I and several others have offered suggestions and constructive posts that provided you an opportunity for discussion, but you have chosen to mostly reply to the more combative responses.
So do you really want a discussion or was this post just an excuse for you to get into a flame war?
but i should have reilized that if its not praise on MMORPG.com then its consitered a toll or something to disagree and fight againt. silly me for wanting a dicussion about it :P
Now it is you and not those responding to you who are being unfair. Many people have attempted to talk to you reasonably about it, myself included. To than take the worst case and apply it to everyone isn't right.
I think this lack of communication using Chat of in game service is going to reduce more and more. Chat service specially with the "Action" combat kind of scenarios where things are happening faster and more chaotic for some one to chit chat about is getting harder. Additionally the game makes what you need to do clearer and hence lesser communication is needed. You are banging on the door in WvW some one will wait till no one puts a ram down and then bam you have a ram down 2 mins later. Then people will run who have supply to use it on the Ram. Some player dies, 3-4 people rush in to Ress him if possible even if he doesnt ask for it. plus the biggest factor to non Chat is now almost any guild of any size be it 2-3 friends to 200-300 members all are using VoIP. So even if you see two peopel running around and you join them to help out in all probability they are friends and are talking on VoIP to each other and dont need to say much to you except a "hi" maybe. And they dont need to invite you to a party cause you can contribute regardless.
I donot find non chatter and useless chucknorris jokes on chat to be something i am missing. Chat stays to point and on genuine queries. RP players will find other RP players organically and unforcably. It is how the world goes.
I for one was had a small experience .. WvW .. people were banging the door down .. no one bought a ram and i didnt have one either (no coins) ... so i went to the side and just started dancing in a corner ... 2 mins later there were 2 more peeps who had joined me .. and we were syncronized Robo dancing asura in the front of the ... door banging Mad villagers in the background. FUN times. I didnt know the other 2 btw.

sorry but im seeing some people poking me im not sayign the majority are but one just really pushed my buttons. i appologize
I know that someone asked you earlier which games you played where there were a lot of "randoms" conversing with each other. You told them that it didn't matter, but I think it does matter. It drives at the fundamental difference between what you have experienced before and what you are experiencing now.
For instance, in EVE, I found that ~80% of my communication was within my corporation, ~15% was in my alliance and ~5% was to randoms. I found that in most other games I've played, the vast majority of my communication has been within the guild and then only stretches to other areas when trying some new PvP comps or adding new people to raids.
Then there is world chat. What can one say about world chat? It is often the most sickening part of playing an MMORPG. The behavior is often infantile and aggressive. One of the first things I do when I enter a new game is turn off world chat.
Also, remember over the years that Ventrillo and other VOIP systems have become prolific. Many times I catch myself missing things in chat because I was focusing on communicating with people over Vent. Sometimes there are 6 people right next to you that are communicating with each other. You may be standing right next to a conversation about the paradoxical nature of rationality without knowing it.
Anyway, I find that people are generally nice and helpful in GW2. I ran around with a random in one of the BWEs for more than a few hours and we friended each other. I did this insane jumping puzzle with a few people I didn't know and we were chatting to each other while we were doing it. Sometimes it's just up to you to try and branch out. It is not the responsibility of a random to entertain you.

Ok careful now - I and several others have offered suggestions and constructive posts that provided you an opportunity for discussion, but you have chosen to mostly reply to the more combative responses.
So do you really want a discussion or was this post just an excuse for you to get into a flame war?
Well I have no problems with the community when I asked about stuffs in BWE1 - BWE3.
There is less talk and more pew pew in the stress test tho.
And also 4 hrs in GW2 feels like 1/2 hr only, don't want to waste time on chatting.
Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language
Fair enough - best thing you can do is ignore them ^.-
(which is kinda ironic when you think about the topic >.>)
